Summary: The best bang for your buck for a serious starting student
Review: There is no way to write a simple book for a complex game, and I doubt it is possible to write a complete book for Hold-Em. Things as simple as the publication of a new book change the dynamics that you will face the next time out. Warren's book is neither simple nor complete but, in comparison to others I've read, it is more easily understood by, and in my opinion more useful to, a new player. Part of this is because it is well organized and Warren uses language well. Part is because it is more forceful on what you should and shouldn't do, and it is more conservative in its advice. These latter strengths are, however, mixed blessings for the newer player and 1-time reader. I would agree that Warren appears to give some contradictory advice on first reading. But as you re-read this book, and read others and play more, you start to understand that what you are seeing are nuances, not outright contradictions. A bigger problem with Warren, in my experience, is that he teaches a strategy so tight that it is more appropriate to a middle- or higher-level game than the Low Limit game at which the book claims to be aimed. But, again, as you see more of the "real world," you can begin to make departures (some of which are suggested in those "contradictions") from the very tight line of play that he advocates for starting players. The bottom line on this book is that it will help you win if you follow it. But it dos this more by helping you keep from losing money than by showing you to wring every last penny of winnings out of the table. And since, as Warren points out somewhere in the book, a dollar saved is a dollar earned, that in itself makes it worth using this book as a jumping-off point. Thanks to Warren's advice, with average cards and against average opponents I have made money from the first Hold-Em game I played. I don't win every time I sit down at the table, of course, and I expect that I'll win less this year than next year, as I learn more about the game by playing it and reading deeper and denser texts. But to get this far I needed to make it past the starting gate in reasonably decent shape. Without Warren's book, that would have been a much harder and less certain thing to do.

Summary: Warren's book is repetative and contradictory
Review: In this book Ken Warren repeats many of his ideas over and over again. Also, Warren focuses too much on position and not the mathamatics of poker. Low and middle limit players can find better books to teach them this complex game.

Summary: Superior guide to Hold 'em!
Review: Warren's tips and tactics for Hold 'em success are some of the best advice that a beginning to intermediate layer can read. His threories on starting hands are particulaly valuable. Warren also stresses the important of position more than some other authors. The book's main strength, however, comes in its' structure. Warren delivers some key strategies for playing at different game intervals (e.g., before the flop, on the turn, etc.) before he reviews how to play certain hands. Thus, the reader can get a general sense of how to play such hands before Warren specifically covers their play. All in all, a fantastic guide to Hold 'em--beginning players will find the advice particularly useful.

Summary: Superb book on Texas Hold-em
Review: Ken Warren's book helped me win $$ the first time I was able to play a serious game of hold-em. The organization of the book makes it easy to flip back to different chapters when I want specific advice on a problem. For the above average beginner or someone with decent poker knowledge I think this book could be of tremendous help.

Summary: Excellent book for the beginner to learn the game
Review: As a newcomer to the game of Texas Hold'Em, I found this book to be informative and helpful. Even though I knew how to play, I didn't know the srategy with regards to playing each hand. The author's tips and skills allowed me to win more often and play with increased confidence. I wholeheartedly endorse this book based on practical application and proven results...Four stars!!!

Summary: Ken Warren Has Made Me $$$$$ in $3-6 Low Limit Hold'em
Review: Ken Warren has key strategies for low limit hold'em. He goes over more card combinations and correct play than Andy Nelson's Intermediate Hold'em. He does create some confusion about preflop raising but everything else is pretty solid.

Rating: 5 stars

Summary: This book is OK for a beginner, but won't get you far.
Review: Warren's book contains some good info for the beginning hold-em player, but you will have to wade through often contradictory advice to find the few good nuggets of wisdom. I would recommend looking elsewhere if you are interested in solid mathematical foundations and game theory based advice.

Summary: It changed me from a loser to a winner.
Review: Tthis was the first Hold'em book that I bought. It is written expressly for the 1-4-8-8 game and contains everthing that is written in other poker books. He has some excellent charts for the probabilities of various hands. Worth the money.
