Summary: From One Who Knows & Still Laughs
Review: "Around the World" doesn't attempt to change air travel or have great literary impact. It's light entertainment. It helps to laugh when we find ourselves in the bad situations Foss describes so well.
From first hand experience, I know the job has its good and bad days, just like any other job. But many of us take pride in our work as safety, customer service and medical professionals. I enjoy making a passenger's journey better, even if it's just a smile and a friendly greeting or a sympathetic ear.
Foss does like lists - airline terminology, everything she knows about life, different kinds of flight attendants, passenger types as determined by their trash output. Most of the lists are used effectively.
But the dialogue and songs taken from the musical revue of the same name don't read as well on a written page as when performed live on stage.
The book is a jaded view from somewhat frustrated with a career. Who doesn't get frustrated some days? But she doesn't claim to represent all of us. And she did make me laugh.

Summary: I fly for the same HOMOPHOBIC airline as Rene Foss!
Review: .
I read this book that was written by my co-worker Rene Foss. I've never met her, so I don't know how she personally feels about working for the airline we work for. (It's a major airline headquartered in Minnesota, but I can't tell you the name of it.) In my experience, working for this particular airline (or being a passenger on one of their flights) is enough to put anyone in a perpetual "bad mood".

I think it is the worst company in the world to work for, or to travel on. Apparently, judging by the title of her book, Foss agrees. (Would a perky, happy flight attendant be in a "bad mood"? I don't think so!)

After my 15 years as a flight attendant with this particular company, I can honestly say that the amount of homophobia this company tolerates and condones is deplorable. Never have I experienced a company that would allow such blatant homophobia and homophobic violence to occur in the workplace.

This book is funny, and contains some real and (mostly) fictionalized accounts of Foss's experiences in the air. It's lightly amusing, but nothing more. If you want the real inside scoop, read on...

I'm currently writing a book that will undoubtedly outsell this one, because I plan to blow the lid off the inside scams and cover-ups that have occurred within this company and their mob-run former flight attendant union. Look for my book in the northwest corner of your local bookstore early next year. It will change the way you feel about flying, and you'll see why I'm in a bad mood that's worse than even Rene Foss's.

I would recommend that gay and lesbian passengers avoid this airline and spend their money elsewhere when traveling. No need to support a homophobic company when there are so many other airlines to choose from.

Sorry, but there are no "friendly skies" to be found on any of these flights!

Summary: What a bore is this book and its author
Review: 200 pages of whining and clichés. And through it all she's hated the job and practically everyone and everything that goes with it. And it's obvious Ms. Foss was her own editor for this project. What a total bore. Becoming a flight attendant wasn't her first choice life ' acting was. Rene, honey, let's be frank, you can't write any better than you thought you could act, and as for flying the friendly skies - - well, maybe a broom would suit you better.

Summary: Hectic Life of a Flight Attendant
Review: A flight attendant for 16 years, Rene Foss developed a musical revue based on her experience, "Around the World in a Bad Mood," which has been performed in various cities since February 2000. She candidly describes the inconvenience of flying from the perspective of a flight attendant, who constantly must handle complaints, delays, food service, air rage, customer misbehavior, and confessions from other flight attendants. Chapters stand alone, describing different aspects of the culture of airline travel; one includes the lyrics to the "Safety Demo Shuffle." There are also insightful details about living in Manhattan in a small studio with a large number of roommates, about the flight attendant's complicated schedule, and about the profession's inevitable frustrations and exciting benefits. I've always wondered how flight attendants manage to stay sane with all the neurotic passengers. Now I know that they're really not and just fake it well.

Summary: ENJOY THIS TRIP
Review: A Must Read For All Flight Attendants - You Will Love This Book And Find Out That You Can Agree To Almost Everything Rene Foss Wrote.

Summary: I love this book
Review: As a fellow Flight Attendant I found reason to love this book. If you are considering purchasing this book, let me enlighten you as to what you will not find in this book: if you are looking for "dirt" or "gossip" about other airlines (our employers insure that we know nothing about other airlines in the event that they have better contracts or benefits. Just like you, we only know what we read in the Money section of USA Today); Ms. Foss does not disclose what airline she works for (after all, she still has to work); insider travel deals or specials (9 out of 10 times flight crews have no idea what promotions are being offered by their employers - we fly space available when not working). What you will find is a Flight Attendant with a sense of humor and a realistic outlook on this job. It's a great read if you want to be entertained, and it's a must-read if you are considering a job as a Flight Attendant!

Summary: 2 topics in 1!
Review: Few things really are worse than being compelled to do a job you don't like just because you couldn't fulfill your vocation but need to eat anyway...

I chose this book for the job of flight attendant, and found myself that thing in common with the author, unfortunately not the job!
Like her, I've always had a dreamjob: hers... and never been able to do it. And nothing she wrote about it weakened my will to become one.

This book doesn't depict so well the job of flight attendant than it demonstrates how miserable you feel when you can't achieve your career goal. That's actually what the book is all about.

I'd recommend it first to airline decision makers, wishing they revise their recruitment criteria when choosing candidates for the job. Obviously they let a lot of more or less talented actresses become flight attendants.
Then I'd recommend it to anyone who considers applying for this job. You'll see if you really want to do it or not.

Last but not least, this book teaches us to persevere and never give up. After all, it's also a book on realizing your dream in the end! And that's entertainment!
