Summary: Every Player Should Have This Book!
Review: One of the best ways to improve one's play is to understand and see tactics over the board. To do this, one needs to practice solving problems. The more you do, looking to see all of the variations and nuances of a position, the better you'll get. When I got this book, I just started plowing into it. There are so many problems of differing motifs and difficulty. The results were immediate, I started winning more games through combinations. And I don't miss as many easy opportunities as I did. Improving takes work, and this book gives you material to work on!

Summary: A very nice book
Review: Solving the problems in this book is a great way to improve your tactical vision. I've seen a big improvement in my tactics since i started solving these problems and so should you.

Summary: Good book of chess problems
Review: The first thing to note is that this is book has a decent 'weight vs. price' ratio. The second nice thing is that yes, this was written by the father of the famous Polgar sisters.

This book is approximately 85% chess problems and of that, about 15% mate in one, 60% mate in two, and 25% mate in three +. The problems basically consist of a picture of a chess board and you have to find the mating move(s). This book is excellent for what it is - a book of problems and solutions. It helps you visualize what mate looks like, trains your eye to recognize forcing moves and tactics, and keeps your mind always on the ultimate goal. I kept noticing that after reading this book for a while and then playing a few games, that I could feel my thoughts heading more directly to mating strategies and potential sacrifices etc.

I've given this book 5 stars because it does exactly what it's supposed to do. If you want a book on openings or chess analysis, this obviously isn't the book for you.

Summary: Good work for Laszlo Polgar
Review: This book full of endgame diagrams.4400 problems solve in 1 to 3 moves. Some solutions not complete,eg:solutions for mate in 2 problem ,only one move shown. But this is should not be the obstacle, coz once you know the first move to the solution, you will get the rest. The problems arranged from too-easy-for-me to more complex situation. Suitable for beginner to intermediate player. Also included the intoduction to chess(pieces movement howto ),can be skipped by beginner. The diagrams are big,6 diagrams on one page. You dont have to arranged the pieces on the board,by looking only at the diagram is enough.Who do this way can improve their tactical vision, imagination capability, and last but not least to the tournament player, the discipline, where pieces only can be touched for detemined steps in the head. Good price.

Summary: Pity the UPS Man!
Review: This book is huge, simply gynormous. You are going to have to read it at home, as you won't be carrying it anywhere. Along with THE ULTIMATE CHESS PUZZLE BOOK (Emms) this is the best-value big book of chess positions.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Terrific book for children and beginners!
Review: This book is the absolute best chess book for the money. It will take years to solve the problems, or review the combinations and games. It is superior book for children and requires no chess set. I suggest that readers sign and date each page as solved, to mark their progress.

Summary: Excellent source of pivotal practice.
Review: This hardback phonebook-sized tome is worth every penny Amazon charges for it. Over 5000 diagrams give the reader ample opportunity to become adroit at determining the best relationships among the pieces. For example, there is a large section of mate-in-twos. In many of the board settings of that section, the reader could easily mate in multiple moves, but the requirement to mate in two forces one to develop a strong sense of how the pieces work, separately and together. And in many real games, one has but a brief window of opportunity to put the pieces to work. It is surprisingly easy to play chess over the Internet.

Summary: Not a paperweight.
Review: This is a great book for players of AVERAGE strength. (1300-1750) (Players outside this rating range may not get as much value from this book.)

Its a big book of problems. As a Chess Master, I can confidently say you will find problems for ANY level player. From a 'Mate in One' for a beginner, to mates in three or more. Plus there are game fragments and short games in here also. AND a section on tactics and combinations.

Just the size of this book alone makes it a value. It will entrtain any chess playing family for years to come.

Summary: Excellent Entertaining Option
Review: This is an excellent entertaining book. Mr. Polgar came up with an interesting and comprehensive collection of compositions and miniature games that will keep yourself and your chess buddies entertained for many hours.
There are two things I would consider for future editions:
- In the miniature games section, the author should allow the reader to figure out the winning combination instead of simply putting the solution below the corresponding diagram.
- I was expecting to find more problems from the composition legend Sam Lloyd. I was a bit disappointed to find only a few of them.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Insomnia
Review: This is not a book to read when you're trying to drift off to sleep. It begins with easy mate in one patterns and progresses to more complex and difficult challenges. It's a very enjoyable book, as it gives you the opportunity to improve your game even if you only have ten minutes to spare. It's quickly becoming one of my favorites, and I predict I'll finish it by 2002.
