Summary: The emerging authority on vocal technique
Review: As a former student of Mr. Miller, I can hardly claim not to have some sort of bias. However, I have yet to encounter a book on vocal technique that is more insightful or more complete. Mr. Miller is one of a number of pioneers who promote the idea that good vocal technique is based on physiology and basic scientific principles (imagine that!). He is a no-nonsense get-down-to-the facts kind of guy when he writes about vocal technique - a welcome contrast to some other works on the subject.

TSOS covers all the major topics in vocal technique in considerable detail - be prepared to look at diagrams and learn terminology. But most of all, be prepared to _understand_. If you find the amount of detail daunting, not to worry - TSOS is well divided into sections, so you can get away with jumping around without too much trouble.

Always entertaining to read and with an unmistakeable style, Miller does not shy away from criticizing certain popular ideas. But more than just criticize, he explains _why_ certain notions are wrong, and what you can do to avoid common pitfalls.

An absolute must-read for the modern singer. Enjoy!

Summary: Systematic is right!
Review: For the serious vocalist, this book is a must. I have been studying voice wih great teachers for the past 23 years, have studied vocal pedagogy in college and have taught privately for 10 years. Nowhere have I experienced such a straight forward, in-depth, enlightening explanation of the process of singing.

This book is usable by all voice types, with special sections for unifying the male and female registers. The exercises are many. I easily spend 1 hour a day vocalizing now. But now my vocalization time has specific goals, rather than just repeating a series of scales with no thought or purpose.

That is the beauty of this book. Mr. Miller shows one how to correct and maintain each of the important aspects of proper vocal production, while increasing one's understanding of the process. Which, and this REALLY rocks, allows one to consistently reproduce the results even under the strain of performance.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Summary: Helpful yet confusing
Review: I have used this book in conjunction with private voice lessons and along with a vocal pedagogy class at my university. I find the exercises in the book superb and the suggestions for helping vocal technique excellent, however, I found the book difficult to read.

Many sections reminded me of a medical textbook in the way that they read. Had I not been using the book within the context of a class with guidance from my professors, I would have found it quite daunting. It is definitely not a book to be read cover to cover, but it does make a good reference.

Since I have started my own studio, I have found the book to be of great use to me. Often I will come across a vocal "quirk" that one of my students has which I have not had experience dealing with in the past. This book is often very handy in not only finding out what exercises I can use to help out the problem, but also offering an explanation of why it's happening. This can often help me ward off future "quirks".

This book is definitely not for the "amateur" singer, or for the beginner. I do, however, find it an excellent resource in my teaching and in my own practice. I would highly recommend it to anyone who takes voice seriously enough to study it at the university level or higher.

Summary: Absolutely not worth the price
Review: Lots of technical words and a few exercises and examples make this book absolutely not worth [the money]... if you want to learn the basics of the singing voice and technique look somewhere else! This book does not help at all... too complicated, with its 372 pages it looks so full of things, but in reality it's totally empty of concepts. 60 pages of bibliography, other 60 pages of medical research... and in the rest of the book (that is 250 pages) you can find maximum 5 useful concepts about the singing technique... the same ones that you can find looking around on the internet...

Summary: Learn how sing the scientific way
Review: One of the most insightful books I have read. Mr. Millers book is so well thought out. The material is so well researched that it sometimes feels like one is reading a research paper. Do not let this discourage you from buying it, however, because it never gets boring. It is a very useful tool for any person who wants to improve his voice. I noticed results withing a few days of reading the book and I have to admit I haven't even tried all the exercises. This book is also not always easy to understand but Mr. Miller does his best to help by adding an appendix and even a glossary of vocal terms! Definitely worth your money if your seeking to better your voice, even if it is not for a professional career.

Summary: A Personal Encounter with Richard Miller
Review: Over 40, now having studied with over twenty professional singers and academic coaches, teaching and enjoying public performances in opera as well as several civic choral societies, I can only regret not having access to this material much earlier in my career. Recently I was introduced to Richard's master class and seminar and I knew immediately that I had to acquire this text. Unlike so many subjctive apporaches I have ran into elsewhere, there is little left to the imagination or to private interpretation when it comes to the pysiology and functionality of the voice as it is so well outlined in its pages. Regardless of the style of singing one might wish to pursue, every serious student/performer will gain infinite insight from following this comprehensive guide to perfecting a more internationaly accepted vocal technique. The sheer volume of difinitive information it contains constitutes the most exhaustive collection of practical examples, scientific research and systematic exercises that I have ever encountered. Now utilized as the basis of instruction at many universities, this lively publication is a must for every studio.

For the sceptic, such as my self, he offers full scientific proof to back up his statements. He also offers many exercises which put his theory into practice. By reading this book you will gain an insight into the mechanics of the singing voice and thus better understand how to develop it.
