Summary: Very Long Opinion Piece, Part of the Big Picture
Review:

Although Jim Hightower appears to have been first on the block with satirical and details critiques of the extreme rightists and corporate cronies of the neo-conservatives, it was not until Al Franken and Michael Moore made the genre popular that this book seems to have taken off. It is the equal of Franken's and Moore's books, but lacks any sort of footnotes or bibliography while helpfully including an index for looking up specifics. In combination with the first two books mentioned, and William Greider's earlier and most serious "Who Will Tell the People" as well as his most recent block-buster, "The Soul of Capitalism" (about immoral capitalism and why this leads the rest of the world to fear and hate us), as well as "Weapons of Mass Deception," this book rounds out a very satisfactory public case for sending the current Administration back to the holes they crawled out of.

Summary: Good Ol' Rabblerousin' Fun!
Review: Yaaa-hoo! The state of Texas has nurtured, gentled, and let loose a bucking bronco of a book here. Hightower's common-sense politics are a refreshing change from the recent objectivist-versus-relativist ramblings that pass for political discussion nowadays. Plain talk and straightforward jabs at the right-wing administration's myriad destructive hypocrisies are the hallmark of this book, along with Hightower's numerous and well-placed calls to action. Sure, he repeats a few stories that were reported elsewhere, much like a comprehensive anthology of wrongdoings, making "Thieves in High Places" a reminder to the American people that the administration's abuses will continue unless both Republicans and Democrats stand up and say "Now hold on there, partner..." Hightower's clarion calls are made even more relevant by recent events, like the outing/attempted silencing of CIA agent and WMD operative Valerie Plame. Taking our country back means taking the demand for a special prosecutor in this case to the public. For example there's a rally in Seattle, Monday November 3rd, 4pm outside the Federal Courthouse on 5th and Madison. geocities.com/specpros03. Support your local First Amendment rangers!

Summary: Every American Should Read This Book
Review: Jim Hightower tells it like it was, is and always be. He proves that neither party represents the common man. He holds no punches and delivers his message with a Texas flair. At times funny and at times deadly serious, Jim takes us backdoor to what is really happening to our country. Only a few selected people control this country and they are doing EVERYTHING in their power to keep control. He also talks about how the neo-conservatives have hi-jacked the Republican Party and why the Democrats are no longer the progressive party. Jim shows why all of Texas don't like GW Bush and he shows facts how Bush actually hurt Texas, rather than helping it. Bill O'Reiliy clams he is a populist. But he NEVER tells the truth when it comes to the Republicans and most importantly, to President Bush. To keep from getting into hot water with his bosses, O'Reiliy just avoids the subject or sugarcoats it. Jim Hightower is not like that. He is a true populist who tells it like it is and don't care if Republicans or Democrats don't like it.

Summary: Excellent
Review: The truth hurts for those 'outed' by Jim Hightower. This book should be read by anyone who cares about democracy in America.

Summary: Required reading for every American.
Review: Hightower has an astute ability to bring forth the serious issues whilst remaining unpretentious. He conveys his thoughts without being indentured to partisanship. I bought 2 extra copies and left them at different laundromats. This book needs to be read by as many ordinary Americans as possible. It's time to end the juggernaut of corporatized government. If we ignore the machinations of the elite, the rest of us will be left only to be employed by delivering pizza's to one another. Unable to purchase anything but products made by slaves in 3rd world countries. While they enjoy the dividends, and party it up! Again,at our expense.

Summary: Insightful and relevant
Review: Here is a political, social commentary that is relevant and well-prepared, delivered with a voice of authority and substantial candor and wit. I enjoyed it and - even when I disagreed - I was delighted with the author's insight.

Summary: Eye-opening, persuasive, galvanizing.
Review: Don't be misled or put off by the cover photo of the author in longjohns. Although Hightower can be funny, the book is quite serious, and full of disturbing and upsetting accounts of cronyism and anti-environmentalism as practised by the Bush Administration. And I, too, will never be able to shop at Wal-Mart again after reading about their practices, unless they dramatically change them.
By the way, the proposition that the author is "in bed with" the Clintons, as a previous reviwer suggested without actually reading the book, is just an example of the knee-jerk, ignorant instantly arrived at "truths" of the Rush right, as Hightower bashes the Clinton administration as well. He's not a Democrat, he's a populist.

Summary: If only everyone could see so clearly...
Review: I saw Jim Hightower speak last night at UDC (University of the District of Columbia). He is down to earth and funny, but also one of the most insightful people of our time. Someone asked who the next leader of the progressive movement would be. Jim said he didn't know. After finishing his book, I think he should step up to the plate.

Summary: Telling it Like It Is.
Review: This is an excellent book although the WalMart chapter made my so annoyed that now I won't shop at any WalMart. Can anyone believe that a company would take out "stealth" life insurance policies on unwitting employees just to make more money? Aren't the billions they're already making enough? This is sleazy, disgusting and it's WalMart to the core! Anyway, the rest of the book is good too. It's an eye opener.

Summary: Hightower on politics
Review: Excellent, incisive and funny. Hightower is a true American treasure. Everyone should read this book.
