Rating: Summary: Great book for the LotR movies Review: This book proves to be a great companion to the trilogy of movies based on the Lord of the Rings. But it should be clear that this book centered itself around the three movies, not the three books. All the information given in this book comes from the movie sources and where the movie sources run against the books, so does this book. With that warning, it pretty clear that this book is a fantastic reference material to the warfare aspect of the movies. It will sure to answer any question anyone may have about the weapons, military aspects and characters of warring elements of Middle Earth. Well worth the price given in Amazon.
Rating: Summary: Great book for enjoying the movies and for wargaming Review: This is a wonderful book. It contains exquisite details about the characters and weapons depicted in the three Lord of the Rings movies. If you want to enhance your enjoyment of these movies definitely get this book. In addition, this book is invaluable for anyone inclined to do any kind of wargaming or modeling in the lands of Middle Earth as depicted in the movies. For example, if you are a player or a collector of Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings Strategy Game, this book is great for painting schemes and modeling details, and second only to the original Tolkien books for background information and scenarios. It must be emphasized that this book follows the movies in every detail. So wherever the movies departed from Tolkien's masterpiece, expect this book to do the same. I would also advise seeing all three movies and even reading the original books before reading this one as it does contain some minor spoilers. If you love the Lord of the Rings trilogy and like most people can't watch the movies too many times on your home theater - get this book.
Rating: Summary: Good book. Review: This is an amazing book for any LOTR fans and anyone who is crazy about battles, weapons, armour etc. It has a load of really detailed descriptions of the key battles of the history of Middle Earth. Last Alliance, Helms Deep, Pelennor fields etc. It also has a detailed analysis of all of the warriors you see in the films, the Elves, Uruk-hai, men of Gondor, Numenorean men, riders of Rohan, the list is almost endless.
I found this book thoroughly absorbing and interesting. Drawing inspiration from both the film and the book it gives you series of detailed descriptions. For anyone who likes LOTR this book is a MUST.
The only criticism is that it draws to heavily on the warped events of the film which dissapointed me but then again I hate films getting things wrong. However this could be expected as it is a book of the film and has to draw largely on important events rarely touched on by Tolkien. the last alliance is a good example. It also tends to write as a history instead of a myth which i personally find uncomfortable and a bit pompous. Other than that this book is excellent. Go buy!
Rating: Summary: A gem of a book Review: This is an excellent book to own if you are a LOTR fan like me. Its also a great book to have if you are interested in the weapons and armor of Middle-Earth. I find this to eb a handy reference when watching the films. Lots of color photos, drawing and history behind the weapons of men, elves, dwarves, orcs, etc. Lots of great diagrams of light and heavy weaponry of all the Middle-Earth races as well. My only complaint was that it was a bigger book. A must buy for any LOTR fan.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, but not Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Review: This is an exceptionally detailed and well written book, with great artwork, and a thrilling read. BUT, a word of warning - it's not TOLKIEN'S Lord of the Rings, but Peter Jackson's. The author seemlessly mixes his/Jackson's inventions and additions from the Movie Trilogy to the original source material by Tolkien himself, without distinguishing the source. As a book to enjoy in its own right I can't fault this. But if you buy it expecting authoritative information on Tolkien's world, prepare to be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: This is really awesome, and if you, like me, are completely obsessed with Lord of the Rings then you have to buy this! It isn't one of those books with how they made the movie, the author talks about it like it's real, so it's perfect for me. But if you get it in soft cover, be gentle with it, it looks fragile to me. Anyway, get it and be happy.
Rating: Summary: THE Bible for Middle Earth military weapons, tactics & more. Review: This very informative book is a must have for fans of the LOTR Trilogy. Great info and tons of photos of the weapons, armor and battle tactics used in all three films. Know the difference between a Gondorian ranger and Citadel Guard? Can you tell the difference between a cave troll and mountain troll? No prob! This book covers it all. Great reference as well. Get it now!!!
Rating: Summary: Buy it -- you won't regret it! Review: What a terrific resource! I bought the book for myself and have had a hard time wresting it out of the hands of my husband, who, like me, is fascinated by the painstaking care and detail lavished upon every aspect of the movie. For those who had a hard time slogging through the Silmarillion, many of the descritpion feature clear explanantions of background material as it relates to the War of the Ring. One caveat: The entries definitely reference the movie version of the story. For instance, they mention the arrival of the Elven archers at Helm's Deep, which is not in the original books.
Rating: Summary: Movie weapons---no, much more than that Review: What an incredible encapsulation of the entire LOTR story! It doesn't just stop at the films, it's a primer on all of Middle Earth. So easy to understand an Orc could read it. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Simply excellent depiction of Middle Earth Warfare Review: While it's true that this book is based on movie visuals, Peter Jackson (himself a warfare afficionado and stickler for accurate battle scenes) has really done a good job of bringing warfare in Middle Earth to life. Probably every single character in the movies is detailed here (from FoTR to RoTK), along with a detailed description and multitude of pictures of their complete suit of armor, weapons, shields, etc.. Some other interesting pictures include extra scenes that were filmed for Fellowship of Gil-Galad and Elendil but were somehow cut out of both the extended and theatrical versions. Hopefully these will eventually make it into some grand release. There are also many other pictures not seen in any of the three movies thus far. I purchased the softcover version, which really isn't a very soft cover at all (great quality), and the best part is that the cover doesn't really retain fingerprints. If you're a Tolkien/movies/warfare type of buff, and you want to know all there is to the different kinds of Uruk-Hai present at Helm's Deep to why the Fountain Guards of the Tower of Ecthelion wore silk masks to a table depicting the range of arrows used in ME, then this book is definitely for you. At ~$11, this book is very worth it with its great host of beautiful glossy pictures and in-depth information.
