Rating: Summary: Highly recommended to all bassplayers Review: "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." Not entirely true, this book explain music's fundamentals in an easy-to-grasp way. This is not only the best "Dummies" book I've read, it's also the most robust and helpful book I've read regarding the bass. The chapter dealing with the styles of popular bassplayers was a favorite of mine. It breaks apart the playing styles of some of my bass heroes, giving insight into how they approach the instrument. Another favorite lesson was the one regarding walking bass lines which I actively employ in my playing. I particularly liked the CD which used real, live musicians (not canned MIDI music using cheesy sounds that one might expect). The CD has the option of playing with or without the bass track. Awesome. I regard myself as a pretty good bassplyer, so I was amazed that I learned a few things from the early chapters of the book, which focus on fundamentals new players need to know. I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to discover or re-discover the electric bass.

Rating: Summary: Great Resource, especially for Beginners Review: Dont let the name fool you. This is not the usual "For Dummies" book. This is a fine starter for anyone wishing to learn (or improve as) a BASS Player. It's up-to-date, well written, easy to follow, and packed with great info. The companion CD helps make the lessons & concepts easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: Four strings/Five stars Review: E-Everything you need to know. Really. A-A lot cheaper than a teacher. D-Definitive Bass book and play along CD. G-Get this book and start playing. Now.
Rating: Summary: Great resource Review: Great resource for learning the bass guitar.
I learned how to read music and learn notes, scales, technique, etc. very rapidly.
The CD is very helpful - but don't expect to use it to listen to the low-pitched bass guitar notes on the tiny little speakers on a laptop computer! I ended up having to hook up big speakers to my laptop to get decent enough sound.
I researched bass guitar instruction books at several large book stores, and this was by far the best book available. The only complaints I have are: 1) the "Dummies" title... I ended up making a book cover that included the fretboard/music notation pages from inside the book (a cheat sheet, if you will). 2) The introduction to music notation didn't include explanations of some obvious things, like what the bass clef symbol notation means(turns out to indicate which line corresponds to the note F), or what the time symbol "c" means (turns out to be common or 4/4 time, which is the time base used for most rock tunes)... I ended up going to Wikipedia to figure out the full details of music notation.
Don't expect to read this book straight thru to learn the instrument... you have to take little samples from the different chapters, and put things together yourself sometimes... but, to be honest with you, I'm not really sure the approach used in this book can be improved on that much... it really is a pretty good book if you are willing to do some of your own research when you get curious about something that isn't fully covered in the book.

Rating: Summary: A Complete Joy Review: I've been playing bass for 20 years on and off and never had a lesson. I bought this book 2 months ago and I'm finally learning what I'm doing right, what I'm doing wrong and why! I wish this had been out when I started. The style is entertaining and easy to read but also detailled and comprehensive without being tiring or overwhelming. The split of topics is good and the CD is a real support, not a gimmick. This book blows away every other bass instruction work I've ever picked up. Great fun, I'm really enjoying my playing and I can hear myself getting better week on week. Do yourself a favour and get this, it really is that useful.
