Summary: Adobe put a 4.0 cover on 3.1 recycled content
Review: Although I generally like Classroom in a Book, if you have already done the 3.1 Tutorial, don't bother spending money on this one.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good overview, lacks details on how to start a new document
Review: Although this book covers a lot, it does not detail how to create a document from scratch. It does not thoroughly explain how to set up templates and master pages. The tutorial has you work on existing documents rather than start a document from scratch, which is what I would prefer.

Summary: EXCELLENT AS ALLWAYS!!!
Review: Another work of art by Adobe! This is an extremely useful and informative learning tool for users of all skill levels!

Summary: Well-done and well-organized
Review: As a rank neophyte to all things Frame, I was pleased with the examples that this book provided. I could have done with a lower-quality paper (and thus lower price), since it's a relatively slim book.

Summary: Just an Intro
Review: As others have noted, this book doesn't cover everything. On the one hand it's well-written so you can whiz through; on the other hand, about all you're learning is some of the most basic functions.

This can be confusing and/or misleading--especially when a complex procedure isn't clarified. For example, in setting up paragraph formats, when does one "apply" and then "update," when does one just "update"?

Also, I found that some of the instructions didn't work as laid out--instead I had to do work arounds. For instance, the book said you could set up arrows to move back and forth in a document and then copy the arrow setup (like a template) to successive pages. The arrows do copy but the formatting doesn't--it needs to be reapplied, so I assume all formats aren't saved when they're copied. [As an aside, I also found that "copy" on the context menu doesn't "copy" everything (which I expected after using MS Word).]

A final note: FrameMaker has great capabilities--though somewhat clunky and ponderous, it's a great improvement on MS Word for more complex activities.

Summary: Boring Classroom
Review: Being a graphic designer entering the world of motion, I found the exercises a bit tame... I had played around whit the program and going trough the exercises was boring to say the least. Maybe it's a way to learn the program, but for me it was not inspiring at all... But that was maybe not the intention?

Summary: Great, but not the only source you'll need.
Review: Classroom in a Book is a great starter for those that do not know anything about FrameMaker. I'm learning the program with about 30 other students. I completed all of the tutorials, and the class thought I was a genius overnight. I'm not a genius, but I did get a good overview quickly and efficiently. I feel comforatble using the Users Guide now because I have a good foundation to work from.

The chapters are easy to understand and the instructionas clearly written. The book is well made. Though paperback, it still lays lays flat and frees your hands and allows you to concentrate on the tutorial.

I do find it a little odd that the tutorial files used in the book are included on the CD with the program, yet the book is not. The Tutorial files are virutally useless if you don't have Classroom in a Book. I do wish Adobe would package this book with the product.

Other than that, this is a book a a must-have for anyone trying to learn FrameMaker.

Summary: Adobe Publishing at its best
Review: Clear and precise, this classroom really does offer excellent teaching. This pupil is learning all the time. Now wouldn't it be a good idea for Adobe to make their own teaching CD-ROMs?
