Rating: Summary: 3D Studio Max 3.0 Workshop. Review: .When I went trough this book in the bookstore, instantly, I had the urge to buy it! The contents were really interesting. But there was one big setback. The very small size of the letters and the book layout, caused me a great eye-stress. After reading a few paragraphs, I was kind of woozy. So, with great pitty from my part, I had to leave it there. I hope that Mr. Duane Loose, writes another book like this one, with equal or even better contents. And with a better layout and more important yet, with a more readble set of letters. For those of U who don't have problems with this, just buy the book! It's worthy! The information is absolutely precious for a better understanding of the basic concepts behind the film creation with MAX. Contents...: 5; Layout...: 2; Comprehension...: 5; Price...: 5: [Evaluation...: 4] .

Rating: Summary: excellent tutorial Review: 3D Studio MAX Workshop is very well written, and like a having a personal tutor guide you through max. It may not be the book for someone who wants to jump in and do nothing but straight tutorials without reading. The author explains a lot of the theory in 3d design with appropriate timing throughout the tutorial, and I found it very enlightening and believe it has made me a much better artist overall. Another positive is the book is based on a complete animation project, so workflow and managing layers are explained, controlling lighting (up to 17 lights at one point), volumetric lighting, alpha mapping, rendering to frames, modelling, and special effects (all of this is from the top of my head, believe it or not). You end up with a pretty impressive animation when you are finished, all built from scratch.
Rating: Summary: How to get the missing TheEndCamera.max file Review: An important MAX file was inadvertently left off the companionCD for the book. You can download it at [mcp]. Or you can follow the same "Merge" process described in the book and instead of merging the camera from TheEndCamera.max use EXBGPyramid.max(found on the companion cd) which contains the camera you'll need to complete the workshop. My apologies for this oversight. From the reviews I'm reading here on Amazon and feedback from my fellow professionals, the book is achieving it's goal of empowering your use of MAX to a higher level. I hope you enjoy this awesome tool as much as I do.
Rating: Summary: Great Book...But Missing Files Review: As a beginner, I found this to be a great book. Its a legnthy tutorial that takes you through all the crucial steps of building and animating a scene. A very cute scene too! The author even gives some valuable advice on creating a reel. However, the missing files were a distraction, especially a missing camera that was required at the beginning.
Rating: Summary: Simple Awesome Review: From trying ot get your thoughts on paper to leanring eye catching tips for scene setup, you simpl cant go wrong. The author starts by emplaining basic concepts of scene setup and walks you thorugha very logical order of setting these up in max and explaining every little detail about what is happening and why it you are doing it. The ONLY gripe i have is, their seems to be a key scene that in the beginning the author needs you to load for camera setup, and it is missing from the cd. Other then that, this book walks you through an entire project of modelling, atmospheric setup, specials effects, compositing and sound integration. EXCELLENT JOB, but i want that TheEndCamera.max file! :))
Rating: Summary: About the missing files problem..... Review: I bought this book about three weeks ago and returned it to the mall. The book went over the materials OK, but there were many files from the CD that were missing, which really gets annoying if I just spent 2 hours on a tutorial, and theres nothing on the CD that came with the book! Don't BUY THIS!

Rating: Summary: Phenomenal Review: I initially purchased this book to attempt to gain insight in the world of low poly modeling(big bucks if you work at a computer game company) But after reading this book, I became enamored with the whole idea of setting up movies, etc. This book basically contains almost everything you would ever need in Max. The only problem is, its missing the stupid TheEndCamera.max file. Other than that, this book is written very well, it covers topics thoroughly, and the end result looks great.
Rating: Summary: Great book to start out with! Review: I thought this book was absolutely perfect for me. I was just beginning to use MAX when I got this book, and it has taught me a lot. Some of the other reviews mention something about the missing camera file; it's true that it's missing, but it is very easy to replace. All you have to do is merge one of the .max files from the CD (example - "ExBGPyramid.max") and it will ask you what you want to merge into your scene, you simply select the camera and there it is. So to all the 3D Studio Max newbies out there, I urge you to purchase this book!
