Summary: Video-Gaming Girl
Review: Before I go into the review, what you have to understand about the game is that most of the missions have more than one solution (which is one of the best things about the game.) If you think that the guide will give you the only, or even the best, solutions for the missions, you will be disapponted. Besides, the fun part is to come up with your own unique solution, and to learn from your mistakes.

That being said, the book offers some great things. The maps were very helpful, especially for finding rampages, hidden packages, weapons, and other goodies. Also, in certain missions, where getting around quickly is a must, the strategies included maps of where to go and how to get there the most quickly.

I did notice a few bits of wrong information (such as, what time the BF Injection Buggy would be available,) but overall, it's a worthy purchase. Just don't buy it thinking it will solve all of your missions for you.

Summary: Just what the Dr. ordered!
Review: For those of us too in love with GTA3 to give it up but not quite able to get past a few missions, THIS is the book to buy.
No, it will not give you any secret codes or insights that you haven't already thought of. What it DOES do is save you hours of cussing and throwing the controller.
This book gives you mission ojectives in order and detail so that you don't miss any by mistake. Some of the info is just common sense, but after trying to sniper-shoot a dozen guys on a ship before realizing that I could climb the stairs to the building top, I tell ya, this book came to my rescue.
You won't need it for every mission, but i find it useful to keep nearby for when I just get STUCK!! You can cheat and use it BEFORE every mission, or just use it as an aid for when you get really stuck. This book can do all that. It's a nice, solid description of the game. Nothing more...nothing less.

Summary: is it worth it? maybe. maybe not.
Review: Grand Theft Auto 3 is a fun game to play. It's not as great as Vice City, but it is still one of the better games out there. But, unlike Vice City, which I enjoyed reading about, GTA3 isn't as much fun to read about. The missions are fairly simple, and there are multiple ways to complete them, so the guide isn't the end all be all that it is in games like Metal Gear. You do get good desriptions of weapons and vehicles. And what I find most valuable are the maps to the hidden treasures, rampages, bribes, armor, life, etc. If you are having trouble completeing the game because you can't find all your hidden treasures and rampages, then this guide will solve your problems.

Summary: A few spoilers won't kill you...
Review: Grand Theft Auto 3 is such a fun game, that even reading about it is fun. I bought this guide in hopes of getting through some of the more serious missions that happen towards the middle of the game. These are the ones where I got wasted on every single attempt. For that purpose, this guide was well worth getting.

The book is very easy to follow, and can be used in a glance when you are mid-mission. It gives the simple details, as well as strategies for completing the missions with as little expense to yourself as possible. It outlines all the missions, including the random ones that get offered throughout the game. It is very useful for someone who likes to discover every little detail in the game. It has full page maps which list all the hot spots, which really helped me when I needed to find Ammunation on Staunton Island. It also gives the locations of all the hidden packages, all the rampages, and all the hidden goodies.

There were a few annoyances with this guide in particular, though. For startes, the icons on the main maps are microscopic. Even for someone with 20/20 vision, making out where the important areas are is difficult. There is also the problem with incorrect information given in the guide. On the mission "A Drop in the Ocean", the book said that I had to pick up 8 packages, but in fact I only needed to get 6. So I spent 20 minutes circling in a boat looking for something that wasn't there.

With a game as big and complex as GTA3, you will probably want a strategy guide so that you can squeeze every last ounce of gamplay out of it. Sure, it's a spoiler, but who cares? A little nudge in the right direction never hurt.

Summary: *Excellent* guidebook for a terrific game
Review: Grand Theft Auto III is a breakout videogame for many reasons, not least of which is the huge variety of missions that you can play, often in whatever order you wish. This guide is perfect for that complexity.

The terrific maps of the Hidden Packages and PowerUps are worth the price of this book by themselves!

Quick tip for new players: Get all the Hidden Packages first thing as each new part of the city opens up. You'll enjoy important weapons right at your hideout from then on!

Summary: A Good Strategy Guide
Review: Grand Theft Auto: Popular, violent, and in need of a strategy guide. A very good strategy guide that gives details about weapons, characters, general tips on things like police and shooting. It gives pictures and good advice on all 73 main missions and the side missions like Taxi Driver and Vigilante. It also gives maps and details on where all 100 packages are. The only flaws are it seems slightly dated with money totals and mission names being different. The other flaw is that the hidden packages are on a map from the game. The problem is the only in-game map is a small circular one in the corner of the screen. Overall, this strategy guide will help you out but you can probably beat Grand Theft Auto 3 without it.

Summary: Okay book, but has many glaring flaws
Review: I was somewhat disappointed with this book for a number of reasons. However, so that I don't sound overly negative, let me first tell you what I liked about it.

1. The maps were excellently detailed and made navigating the game far easier than simply using the on screen map in the game. There was only one exception I cited below.

2. I would have paid the price of the book if the only thing they gave me was the packages map! It was excellent, and overall a great time saver. Beware though for package number 25 (on top of the drugstore). It is without a doubt the most difficult package to get to and the book doesn't describe how to do it (Email me if you want a little walkthrough for that one).

3. The "Secrets" section at the end was very detailed even though there were several factual errors about the Vigilante, Fire-truck and ambulance missions and the specific order in which you receive weapons by collecting the packages. For example, collecting 30 gives you the grenades but the book says it gives you armor.

4. Some of the mission tips and walkthroughs were very good, particularly some of the Career missions".

Okay now for the negatives:

1. Although most of the maps were excellently detailed, the powerup maps were sometimes difficult to decipher because they used symbols that were so small that it made it somewhat hard to tell similar looking icons apart; for example differentiating armor from a Unique jump/Stunt bonus. perhaps had they increased the size of the map showing the powerup, or changed the color designations it would have been a tad less ambiguous.

OH and the topography of the islands is WAY off with regard to their position relative to each other. They have, for example, the bridge connecting Shoreside to Stauton in 2 places!! It took me a while to figure out that they didn't have enough space to display the third island as far North and East as it really exists in the game. I spent a month scratching my head, wondering what the heck that second bridge on the map was! They also have it labeled as a shopping mall!

This could have easily been solved by making a foldout map similar to what comes with the game, or having a seperate, smaller map, just to see what the three islands looked like side by side.

2. Although, as I said, many of the level descriptions were very good, a lot of the so called strategy guides/Walkthroughs for some levels, as well as other missions were incredibly lame, and amounted to nothing more than reiterating the instructions that the game gives you when you come to that mission. This is particularly true on the off road missions where you have to get to a given number of checkpoints. These were, by the way, some of the more difficult missions in the game and about all that the book tells you is where to find the mission. Seriously, what were they thinking on this?

3. Where are the Cheat codes? I do not use them myself, but I would think that an Official Strategy guide would have a full arsenal of them!

4. There should be a separate list of all the gangs of the game, as well as where to find them. It would take up about a paragraph, as anyone after finishing the game could do it. This info would have been exremely useful my first time around the game.

5. There is absolutely no useful information about flying the Dodo plane.

Now for me, the book was worthwhile obtaining, no question, if for no other reason than the maps and packages locations. However, if you are on a budget or short on cash, and feel that you could use the big maps that come with the game, put the money towards another game instead and get your walkthroughs off of the Internet...In short, it was fairly obvious to me that the people at BradyGames didn't play GTA 3 very much. Most likely they simply got all the pertinent specs from Rockstar (the game's publisher) and went through the game, playing it only the obligatory time necessary to beat it once and do a few side missions.

The writers were wholly unfamiliar with far too many of the subtleties of the game for me to recommend the book anywhere near as enthusiastically as many of the other reviews I have read thus far...

Summary: Thin on content but helpful with hidden packages
Review: If I would have purchased this strategy guide prior to purchasing the strategy guide for Grand Theft Auto-Vice City, perhaps I would not have set my expectations so high. This strategy guide is OK, just OK. They have a map towards the beginning of the guide that shows where rampages, power ups, and other things are and the dimensions are so small it is almost useless. This guide is helpful for finding the 100 hidden packages. I found them with greater ease once I purchased this guide. As for the mission descriptions, some are vague and others are more in depth. This is not a guide that will help you greatly complete the game, but having the color guide will enhance your play of the game. It's thin on content, help and hints compared to the Vice City strategy guide but it is satisfactory.
