Rating: Summary: If you liked this book..... Review: ...you'll also enjoy Friedman's other super hero novel, FANTASTIC FOUR: REDEMPTION OF THE SILVER SURFER.PLANET X is a nifty little novel with some great moments (the Worf/Wolverine holodeck sequences are worth the cover price all by themselves). END
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: A rather interesting book.Plot could have been better.
Rating: Summary: Friedman's Triumph Review: Actually, I haven't even finished this book but I thought that I could at least encourage others to buy it and read it. I had read the Marvel Comics ST/X Men crossovers and was pretty amused; I had also read some of Friedman's earler books like Kahless (which is an excellent book). Whilst I liked the comics (for their visual impact) and Kahless (for its insights into Klingon religion and mythology), I was really doubtful about the way that a writer even of MJF's stamp could translate the comic idiom to the written page. But he did it, and from page 1 I have been hooked! The charactrerisations of the main ST protogonists is totally faithful to the TV series - such as Worf's reaction to the surprise party - and, though I am less familiar with the X Men, I am prepared to believe that MJF has caught their idiosycresies as well. When I've finished this book - which should be by the end of today at this rate, I'll probably have to come back and give it a 10!!
Rating: Summary: A fun ride, but too predictable. Review: As a supposed continuation from a Marvel Comics one-shot, the premise seemed solid. However, the story was very predictable. Though the characters of Star Trek were portrayed well, I thought that the X-men were out of character (being that I am a huge X-Men buff). The other problem I had was the choice of X-Men. Though Wolverine, Archangel and Storm are among the popular X-men, Shadowcat and Colossus are second or even third stringers making an unusual combination for Marvel's mutants. I would have rather have seen Cyclops or even Iceman. If Mr. Friedman understood the individual powers of each of the X-men, I think better situations/scenario's could have been written for them and how they would have interacted with crew of the Enterprise.
Rating: Summary: An interesting, well written concept. Review: At a glance, this seems like a weird and stupid idea. It isn't. Friedman has taken two very different and very popular ideas and blended them into one. My bigest problem with this book is the characters chosen from the X-Men. Wolverine and Storm are definate must-haves and Archangel is a good pick. Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, and Colossus were some bad picks, mostly because they aren't even in X-Men anymore. Also, there are a few places where the X-Men's powers don't seem to quite be correct. The X-Men choosen makes it seem like this is Classic X-Men, down to the costumes, yet they keep refering to events that happened recenly, like Archangel getting his real wings back. Overall, this is a well written book with plenty of originality, though the seen with Storm and Captain Picard seemed rather unlikely. If you like Star Trek and/or X-Men, give this book a try.
Rating: Summary: Already been said... Review: Everything I wanted to say has already been said... except for dmaxwell's comments... read the book BEFORE you make a decision... It's a great time!!
Rating: Summary: Fun reading, especially for fans Review: Friedman's novel brings together two pop-culture icons (the universes of Star Trek and the X-Men) seamlessly in this action-packed novel. While I think Friedman is one of the best Trek authors around (in both the comics and fiction world) this is not up there with his best work. Still, it's a fun, well-paced read, and he stays true to the characters of both universes. For fans, the Epilogue is a special treat! Perfect summer reading for Star Trek and X-Men fans. And though this is a sequel to Marvel Comics Star Trek/X-Men crossover entitled "Second Contact" you don't need to have read that to enjoy this.
Rating: Summary: A Poor attempt to bring these two worlds together at best! Review: I am a fan of both the X-men and Star Trek, but I must admit I am very disappointed in this book. About half way through I contemplated about not finishing it, but it was a short book and I kept telling myself it would get better. Sadly however, it did not. I found the X-men characters poorly portrayed, and did not care at all for the romance between Storm and Picard. In addition, I believe several of the characters actions, both X-men and Starfleet, to be out of character and inaccurate according to their respective story lines. Finally, I must say I was expecting a little more depth to the story line as I found it very predictable and free of any twists. About the only good things I could say about the book would have to be the camaraderie between Worf and Wolverine, and the fact that the nook was in fact short!
Rating: Summary: Don't even bother! Review: I am not a TNG or X-Men fanatic, however, I do follow both and enjoy partaking in their respective adventures. I couldn't see how Friedman was going to take these two different universes and cross them over. I can say the result is disappointing.I won't go in the poor characterization of the X-Men nor will I discuss the horrible relationships that ensue between the Enterprise crew and the X-Men. I will suggest that you, the dear reader, avoid this book like the proverbial plaque.
