Rating: Summary: Just think of editorial cartoons as history with an attitude Review: At the end of each year I go out and pick up copies of the "Life" year in review issues, one for each of my kids. Each has a set going back to the year they were born, and when we add the new one to their collection we usually go back and look at the old ones. It is a nice way of remembering what happened each year of their lives. Another way is to flip through the pages of one of these collections of the "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year," because there is nothing better than a wicked editorial cartoon to remind us what people were thinking about the controversies of the day. This 1996 edition has over 420 editorial cartoons from over 180 leading cartoonists from the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Of course the number one target in this collection is President Bill Clinton who was being pilloried for Whitewater, Travelgate, the Mexican peso bailout, a balanced federal budget, and sending troops to Bosnia (remember: this is all before Monica). First Lady Hilary Clinton is also a favorite target as is Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (hard to believe that with a few years Gingrich would be out of office and here on Amazon.com reviewing with the rest of us). Colin Powell was considering whether or not to run for President, the world was trying to figure out a way to end the war in Bosnia, Senator Bob Packwood was forced to resign, and Princess Di was telling all on television. There are also chapters devoted to the outcome of the O.J. Simpson trial and the Oklahoma City bombing which show how well editorial cartoonists can deal with the worst moments.
