Rating: Summary: HOLY JEEBUS, this book is hilarious Review: I was out last night with a friend and out of boredom, we decided to go into Tower Records and books. Somehow, I stumbled accross this book. Its truly the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. We actually paid 16.95 for the book. I love the sick, side splitting humour and the crude and twisted animations. The book is eccentric and creative. I haven't laughed that hard in a while. My abs still hurt in fact. If you want to have sore abs and possibly pee on yourself from laughing so hard ...get this book =)
Rating: Summary: welcome to the real world with a twist, kid Review: appallingly original, this may not be the stuff for children, but rather for those who happen to consider themselves one of those "troubled children"...oblong's simple-looking yet succinct drawings go perfectly with the straight-looking (look again!) but turbulent story-line. i just *love* creepy suzie and my heart goes all out for stupid betsy (still with a not-so-innocent smile though), and dick & muffy always make me laugh no matter how many times i open the pages on them. i really wouldn't call oblong's humor "sick" or anything like that, but of course if you've always been reading in a bed of roses then this will take some getting used to. as for me, i keep this book next to my pillow and read myself into some dark, dark slumber at night.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the price of admission. Review: Simply stated, this book is not worth the money I spent. I got it in pristine condition and put it on my headboard until I had more time to read it. I then decided to just check out a few pages and see what was waiting for me. Twenty minutes later I had finished the book. Talk about an anti-climax. Sure, there was plenty of macabre humor via mediocre illustrations and lame word-usage, but overall I felt ripped off. If I ever read this again (note that jokes are never as funny the second time around), that will give me 40 minutes of entertainment for 12 bucks plus shipping. I could rent three DVDs, or go see "The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King" for a third time. When all is said and done, this book will be relegated to the bathroom, near the toilet, for when any guests need to spend some quality time in there.

Rating: Summary: Verrrrrry Funny Review: A kid's book not for the kiddies. One of the funniest books I've "read" in a long time. Most of the humor comes from Angus Oblong's imagry, both funny (hilarious at times) and disturbing...in a funny way. Adults with a slightly twisted sense of humor such as my own will find this book amusing and refreshing. If the cartoon "The Oblongs" still is available in your area, I highly recommend that as well.
Rating: Summary: NOT appropriate for today's post-Columbine youth! Review: Granted, I am not the target audience for this book. I bought it with the intention of giving it to my teen-age niece, who is going through some difficult times. Fortunately I read it before wrapping it up for her! This book is not funny, it is SICK! Worse, it is dangerous-- the last thing my niece needs is to be overheard telling these stories at school, she would be expelled! I am a pretty open-minded person. I can appreciate dark humor. I was a nerdy tortured misfit in my own youth and can certainly appreciate humor at the expense of the "in" crowds. Several of the stories poke painful fun at the psychiatric establishment, at being forced to be "normal", and at having alcoholic or just plain crazy parents. I winced at some of them (in one a little boy's parents have him put to sleep because of a "loose brain"), but I can see their appeal. However, when Helga infiltrates the "Debbies" (popular girls), she ends by cutting off their heads. Creepy Susie is troubled by sexual feelings that she doesn't understand and can't get anyone to explain to her, so she takes a knife to the object of her affection and cuts out his brain. Patty solves her sibling rivalry by killing her brother with a rake. Jenny, Jenny, Jenny, and Babette (Siamese quadruplets joined at the head) run away and finally find happiness, then go back to their hated parents, cook them, and eat them. I'm sorry, but in today's post-Columbine age, kids solving their problems by killing people is just NOT FUNNY. Needless to say, I am returning the book, and good riddance to it!
Rating: Summary: A complete riot! Review: I was laughing the entire time I read this thing. Absolutely random and pointless, it's very 'light' reading that should satisfy anyone who enjoys the bitterness of an episode of Daria.
Rating: Summary: Wish I could have been this funny as a kid Review: OK, this is a dark and morbid collection of tales. It is also incredibly funny. To a certian extent, the writing and drawing reminds me of the stories and jokes that I tried to tell when I was in second/third grade. The difference here is that despite the crude drawing style, and simple writing, these tales are actually rather sophisticated, my stories and drawings were not. The folks that are knocking this book probably think that Monty Python is just a bunch of cross dressing brits. There are twists to the words, and subtle things in the drawings that raise this miles above the average. Well done!
Rating: Summary: for outcasts only Review: If you weren't/aren't part of the "in" crowd, you will LOVE this book. If you were/are a cheerleader or a jock, go back to your stair-steppers and dumb-bells and find some other fluff to read (maybe Cosmo or GQ) because you probably won't think these short stories are funny at all. Tim Burton would be proud.
Rating: Summary: Different...to say the least !! Review: I bvought this book for my daughter for xmas. I picked this one over Emily Strange for some reason. They are very simple stories that I figure any writer can come up with themselves. They are however, morbid. I am glad my daughter (15 years old) takes the book with great humor, although she did have nightmares the night after first reading it. I believe it is just because of the morbidity that she is not use to. Overall it is an ok book, but I wouldn'y buy it for anyone not mature enough to handle the humor no matter what their age.
