Rating: Summary: fun Review: a good alternative to school books, i wish i was a kid again... on the negative, i bit tidious, no aperent story line, you get lost halfway the book, tons of names, characters, tiny stories.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: A seminal work. Simply a fun great account of the history of man. This book does a great job telling the story of civilization from the dawn of man to Moses and the Greeks. A very accurate and funny story that illuminates the essentials of western civilization in many pages of hilarious cartoons. A great gift.

Rating: Summary: Should be required reading for all high school students. Review: After reading The Cartoon History of the Universe, you will undoubtedly have a better understanding of history and a profound sense that learning can be fun. Spend a few dollars for what should turn out to be the best read you will ever have. However, I don't recommend this book for young kids as it interjects some rather risque commentaries/jokes that is inappropriate for kids under, say, 15.
Rating: Summary: Educational! Entertaining! Great! Review: All the good things that have been mentioned above about this series are true. One things, stay away from his "The Cartoon History of the US" book...the humor was just not there and the drawings were horrondous.
Rating: Summary: another great cartoon guide Review: Another great cartoon guide. It has accurate information with a bit of humor mixed in. I enjoyed it and it was educational all at the same time.
Rating: Summary: entertaining and informative..... Review: Billions of years of history are combined in the first of these excellent books. Author Gonick takes us from the "Big Bang" to Alexander the Great with his cartoons and even manages to get a bit of detail in parts of it...(obviously this book is not comprehensive, nor is it intended to be)Gonick does not shy away from unpopular or unpleasant aspects either. His portrait of Moses is not particulary flattering and he is not afraid to poke fun at scientists and their various "theories" of how/why this or that happened. This book is written from a scientific viewpoint, so Creationism gets short shift here...(not mentioned at all in fact). An excellent bibilography is furnished at the end of the book for readers who want to delve farther into the historical periods covered here...very highly recommended

Rating: Summary: I use it as a reference book! Review: Cartoon History presents a large amount of information at a rapid clip and keeps you laughing the whole time. Topics that may have seemed boring in history class (or weren't addressed at all) will suddenly spark the imagination and leave you wanting to read more. Thick history presented in the exact opposite of dry textbook style, all high school and college students should own a copy of this book! (Gonick doesn't pull punches about the graphic violence and bizarre sexuality of our history, so parents should exercise discretion about handing this book to younger students.) Gonick also shows intriguing perspectives that you won't get in the average, mainstream textbook market; and he especially gives women a voice they normally do not have. Hopping all over the globe for more than white man's western civ, this book and its sequel open up history in a startling and energized way. I highly recommend keeping a copy on your reference shelf.
Rating: Summary: Great way to interest students in History. Review: From the big bang onward Gonick picks and chooses the important events, from his point of view, and tells them in a humorous way. At the end is a good bibliography of books for a more serious study of the topics covered.
