Rating: Summary: With this book, you really get to know Patsy Cline... Review: I have long been a Patsy fan and this book is the definitive Patsy biography, not only from the standpoint of the photos that none of the other books have (some of them very rare indeed) but also because of the interviews with Patsy's mother, husbands and boyfriends and those people in Nashville, like the great Loretta Lynn and Dottie West, who knew Patsy so well. It's fun just for the stuff from Brenda Lee! This was also the first Patsy biography and the others have used it, as is often the case, to copy much material and they build their own. I have never been more moved than when reading about Patsy's last days and the crash and the aftermath of how it affected her family.
Rating: Summary: Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline Review: I just finished reading this book and I must say it took me quite a while to get through it. Not because it was difficult reading by any stretch of the imagination but it was just plain boring and rather tedious. There were times where I dreaded picking it up, but I am not one to quit, no matter how bad it might get.
Either way I don't recommend this book and I also want to point out that the author himself reviewed this book. Is that "legal" over in Amazonland?
Rating: Summary: Don't bother...this book is a waste of money! Review: I recently saw this book on my friend's book shelf. Since I enjoy biographies and I like Patsy Cline's music, I wanted to know something about her life. Despite my friend's less than ringing endorsement of the book, I borrowed it. Well, it was a terribly written book. It is surprising how dull the author made this book. It was so boring that I heaved a sigh of relief when it was over. When I told my friend that I was ready to return it to her, she told me not to bother, that I could give or throw it away. She said that she really had not liked it either. I really wanted to give this book a good review, but the bottom line is that the book sucked.
Rating: Summary: What a Book! Review: Last night my mom brought this book in for me to read! Rating: Summary: From a drug store to the Opry, and all stops in between Review: Nassour manages to show the struggle Patsy Cline went through to make it to the top, from her high school days in Winchester VA to her too early death at 30 in a crashed airplane in Tennessee. Lovers of good music who can sing every note of every Cline song, and mimic each break in that unique voice, will learn she grew up collecting Kay Starr records, worked her way around the VA-WV-MD fraternal club circuit, wasn't always popular in her home town and cut a wide path for female country singers to follow. She was a country singer when country was country. But she was also the first to use strings and when Owen Bradley added Floyd Cramer's piano to those famous recording sessions, the real Patsy Cline sound matured in the style still heard around the world today. Well documented, good photos, immensely readable
Rating: Summary: The definitive Patsy Cline bio birthed by Ellis Nassour Review: Since Ellis Nassours bio on Patsy Cline first appeared in 1981, there have been many failed attempts thru the years by other authors to capture the true essence of Virginias songbird the way Mr Nassour had. A good read....full of laughter and tears
Rating: Summary: A Literary Hologram! Review: The only thing that comes close to Patsy Cline's haunting singing voice is the enthralling story of her tumultuous, yet victorious life - as told by biographer Ellis Nassour. In "Honky Tonk Angel, the Intimate Story of Patsy Cline," Nassour has brought Patsy to "life" again. His sensitive, yet honest, recounting of the legendary singer's struggle to become a "star" in the male-dominated country music field is filled with her family and friends' three-dimensional memories of Patsy, her toughness, her talent, her tenacity, her loyalty and compassion. This is not a book for "Country-only" fans. Patsy's life story will encourage and comfort others who may be struggling through life toward success. Nassour's writing could be compared to a literary hologram in his ability to present his subject through sight, sound and touch. I could veritably hear Patsy sing "Walkin' After Midnight," see her sassy walk and feel her tears as I read. A.K.A. Rating: Summary: PATSY CLINE: THE MONEY...THE MEN...THE MUSIC... Review: This biography, with a foreword by the late Dottie West, captures much of the feeling of the era in which its subject lived and grew up, as well as the state of the music industry of the time. The book has a more difficult time capturing the essence of its subject, Patsy Cline, the hard living, hard loving, country diva who would become known as one of the most emotive voices in the history of country music. In her too short career, cut prematurely in a plane crash, she managed to put together a notable roster of musical hits and was a crossover sensation, with hits in both the country and pop charts of the time.
The book is chock full of information, much of it interesting, if one is interested primarily in the music that Ms. Cline sang. One comes away from reading this book with a good appreciation of the music industry of the time and a great deal of information about the songs that were to propel Ms. Cline to stardom, as it is exceedingly well-researched and contains a complete compendium of her songs.
As to the subject of this biography, the author has done little more than string together many quotes from those who knew Ms. Cline, with little or no analysis or insight in the mix. The author has also included some of Ms. Cline's personal correspondence. These reminiscences, while interesting, are sometimes repetitive, and the book could have benefited by more artful editing and better writing. Still, a portrait of the struggling artist with too little money and too many men emerges from the pages of this book. Those who are die hard fans of Ms. Cline will gain a modicum of enjoyment from reading this book, which includes eight pages of black and white photographs.
Rating: Summary: The greatest. Review: This book is truly a masterpiece. No other Patsy biography can come close. Beautifully written. I've read this book atleast 6 times, probably more, and can NEVER put it down once I start. Every time I read it, I find something new that I didn't know was there before! Truly amazing work by Nassour. Now if only "Sweet Dreams" had been based off this book!!! I will forever be greatful to you, Mr. Nassour. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
