Rating: Summary: Such a cool hard core novel Review: This is a fantastic book, it is witty and informative. Lloyd is the ultimate punk rock hero of film.
Rating: Summary: This is an amusing and complex book Review: Despite how it is being marketed, this pseudo auto-biography allows you as much into the personality of Kaufman as it does into the history of Troma or its stated purpose, to teach young filmmakers how to get started in the business. Like the best of Kaufman's films, this book brings you into a subject that you may not be initially interested in, and forces you to pay attention. For example, the average reader probably does not care about the filmmaker's years in college or his wife's reaction to her portrayal in the first few chapters of the book. However, the natural charisma of Mr. Kaufman brings you warmly into his life and allows you to enjoy the story of the world's oldest independent film studio. And like the worst moments in Lloyd's movies, the humor can be so hokey that you blush on Kaufman's behalf. But that is half the fun. Additionally, to show the complexity of the human character, something Howard Stern has never been able to do without back peddling, Lloyd will tell you a story such as needing to leave a gory shoot of the film Troma's War to watch his wife give birth. In all, it is a fascinating book whether or not you are interested in Troma studios.
Rating: Summary: A must for all independant filmmakers! Review: Lloyd Kaufman shares his experiences within the strange and perverse universe that we've come to know as Tromaville. This book is a guide for all independant filmmakers and those who want to become one. Lloyd makes the book fun with his witty humor and gives an insightful view into the world of independant filmmaking. Occasionaly Lloyd will slip away from the point and reveal stories about his past (even those we aren't supposed to know). If you ever met Lloyd in person, this is no strange phenomenon. Lloyd speaks honestly about all subjects and doesn't hold back anything. Lloyd Kaufman and James Gunn have really outdone themselves. If you are a fan of Troma, you should already have the book. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, what are you waiting for?
Rating: Summary: Lloyd Kaufman is God! Review: I just finished reading Lloyd Kaufman's "All I need to know about filmaking I learned from the Toxic Avenger. This book was incredible. Not only was the book really funny but it also was very informative. It was interesting for me to find out some more of lloyd's views on the big companies. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't completely excited about cooperations taking over, not to mention just die hard Troma fans like myself.
Rating: Summary: If i ever made a movie id make one like this Review: This book is great it helped me with my perseption on life and how you should do what you want to do and not what others say to do. If you want to make a movie thats different buy this book, it will teach you how to make a movie with nothing but a toothpick in your pocket. This book is great.
Rating: Summary: Book delivers insights, laughs and occasional introspection Review: I have to confess that I'm not a huge Troma fan. In fact the first Troma film I saw the whole way though in one sitting was Tromeo and Juliet, the same night I met Lloyd (who is gem in real life, though I can see him being a terror on the set). All that being said, I loved the book. Lloyd and James Gunn (and Barry in the footnotes ;-P) have crafted a great work that drifts in and out of fantasy and reality with green toxic goo spewing forth. You don't need to be a fan to enjoy this. The book is approached with the same love that is crafted into every Troma film (I have since caught up on the films I was missing). The writers care about what's contained on the pages, but treat it with loving irreverence. The insights into the industry are dead on (especially the Ratings Board). And the tips for sex with small rodents were eye opening (ok... the last part is not in the book, but if you found that funny this book is definitely for you). There is a lot to be learned from Lloyd's ramblings. Whether your a filmmaker, a fan or someone who enjoys a good(bad) b-movie every now and then, give it a try!
Rating: Summary: Hot Damn! The funniest piece of non-fiction I've ever read! Review: This book rules the school, even if you are only slightly interested in film or Troma. This book is actually enjoyable when Lloyd Kaufman get's off topic... it usually results in a tall tale about making love to Whitney Houston or some other misadventure. BUY THIS BOOK! NOW!
Rating: Summary: Perfect to sit alongside D&D books and pornography Review: Anyone who is a true videophile will know the importance Lloyd Kaufman has had on the world of film-making. With 25 years of experience to draw on, Lloyd Kaufman has managed to make a book that reads just like one of his movies. Disjointed at times, it shows the same short attention span and pervese humor that has made "Tromeo and Juliet" the Citizen Kane of acne-ridden teenagers everywhere. If you appreciate the movies of Troma Studios, you'll love the style of the book as well as the background on the greatest (and oldest) independant film studio in the world. Even if you've never heard of Lloyd or the Toxic Avenger, you will still find this book entertaining and fascinating reading, as long as you aren't looking for something astoundingly deep or moving.
Rating: Summary: what a nifty book Review: Lloyd Kaufman is one of the funniest, charasmatic guys who has ever written. He is one of my heroes. I love Troma movies and I love this book. It is so funny!!! It also has great tips for young directors on inexpensive ways of creating movies and methods needed in directing. Kaufman's story is extremely entertaining and heartwarming.
Rating: Summary: All I Need To Know About Lloyd's Book I Learned From Jim D. Review: This book, written by the co-founder of Troma and James Gunn (both my heros), takes you through the mind warping story of how to make a Troma-like film, and goes into the story behiend Troma. So wether your a diehard Troma fan or not, you'll love this book. And even if your just looking for a little comedy, this book is for you! Long Live Troma!
