Summary: One of the Last True Independents
Review: As amusing and laugh-out-loud funny as this book is at times, it is also a sad reminder that the days of filmmakers getting their vision on the screen without the overwhelming influence of large corporations are on the wane. The trials and tribulations of Troma Studios as it tries to navigate the rocky terrain inhabited by independent filmmakers are well-documented. Amidst all the humor, are some useful tips for aspiring filmmakers regarding special effects and scheduling strategies. Highly recommended for any aspiring filmmaker/screenwriter whose stories diverge from the mainstream.

Summary: It's not a "HOW-TO" guide, but a good read for TROMA fans.
Review: Like the title says, this is not a "how-to" guide on filmmaking, the "how-to" parts would probably make up less than 1% of this book. I'm not kidding.

What this book is, is an autobiography of Lloyd Kaufman/history of Troma Studios.

The book chronicles Lloyd's early days working in New York films doing grunt work, right up until one of his latest releases... "Tromeo And Juliet".

If you've ever seen a Troma movie, you'll know that it has the tendency to either go beyond good taste, or what you're expecting... or just be completely anti-establishment in it's nature.

Lloyd's writing is the same, it's insightful, interesting, FUN, while also being really wacky and off the the wall. Sometimes to the point where you'll find yourself wondering... "Why have I paid for a book about Lloyd's experienced with hookers and venereal disease in Africa?"

(Rest assured, Lloyd offers a valid reason for a lot of of mad and strange anecdotes he offer in his book.)

Perhaps the book's best strong point, is it's great background/historical information of things that happened behind the scenes during the making of Troma's biggest films...

The Toxic Avenger 1-2-3, SGT Kabukiman NYPD, Troma's War, Class Of Nukem High, Tromeo And Juliet.

These are but a small percentage of the films Lloyd goes into great depth explaining eactly what went on and why. Like I said, the book completely chronicals everything about the early days before the Toxic Avenger. The Toxic Avenger (Troma's most famous film) doesn't appear until about half-way through the book).

I rate this book 4 stars because it's got everything in there, but I don't rate it 5 because Lloyd, not being the greatest writers in the world... and always seemingly lost in his own little world, goes too far at times filling pages with stupid unnecessary chat transcripts. (They do often serve a purpose, but not always)

Summary: STEAL THIS BOOK!!!
Review: I could not have been more impressed with this little tome. Kaufman's autobiography provides readers with an amazingly funny and even-handed history of his film making and producing career.
This is a must for anyone interested in cult film. It made me want to get a job at Troma...

Summary: Tromatic Violence! Most Enjoyable Book Ever!
Review: I love this book. It is so wonderful. I bought it last year, and am still reading it (I'm kind of a slow reader) No, not really. I've read the whole book, but I skim through it all the time, and it never loses its humor. If you like independent thought, naked breasts, and the Erotic Components of Colostomy Bags, this book is for you. Screw the corporate power elite! Do you hate Spielberg, Cameron, all those B.S. corporates who make horrible movies like Titanic? If not, you should. Troma does not make stupid films. There is always a message. Anyone who thinks Troma is brainless, think again. Lloyd Kaufman is an awesome author, and truly a genius. I want another Lloyd Kaufman book! He's extremely friendly too, answers his emails. Great guy. Buy this book!

Summary: READ this review!!!!
Review: Hey Kids my name is Micheal Shea,
Almost two years ago I wrote a review for this book and now I notice that I mispelled a few things, so I 'm taking this time to rewrite it. This is the greatest book ever. Its so good I tracked Lloyd Kaufman down and asked him to sign it. It's awesome!!! So read it. And if I find out who ever said my last review wasn't helpful to them I'll kick their ass. Only one person didn't like it so screw them.

P. S. listen to Property they rock.

Peace, Love, and vaseline,
Micheal Shea

Summary: Troma is the king B-Movies
Review: What fun to read how the movies came about. To get some background and antedotes on the various really bad movies they make!

If your not a Troma fan, run out and rent one. The movies are a wonderful way to spend a raucous evening with friends and popcorn.

Summary: A Must Read
Review: Lloyd Kaufman's book is wonderful. I have read a lot of books of film and filmmaking, but this is one of the few that kept me entertained all the way through. The book shares his experiences through the film industry, the ups and downs of Troma Films, as well as little assides like "Stunts Gone Wrong" and conversations with his publisher. Even if you're not a complete movie freak, or never heard of Troma Films, this book is a must read.

Summary: A voyage into the gooey, gushy brain of Mr. Lloyd Kaufman
Review: This book is a hysterical personal introduction to Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Troma and creator of vastly entertaining and pleasingly off-color independent films for over twenty five years. You get to hear the personality of Mr. Kaufman as if he were talking with you personally and you get an intimate understanding of the comedic genious which has purged forth a multitude of films which has left his audiences rolling, recoiling, and wretching with joy! This is a must-read for any and all persons with an interest in filmmaking, comedy, life and it's purpose in this horrific and hysterical universe! And also for people who just like to laugh their silly little heads off their shoulders and onto the floor leaving a yucky, slimy, bloody trail of oozing putredness!!!

Summary: Eye Candy
Review: I am not sure what I can add to the 108 glowing reviews that precede this one . However, since film is such a visual medium, perhaps you would be interested to know that the book is very pleasing to the eye as well. Rather than fill this volume with long, text-heavy passages of technical jargon and highbrow postmodern pontification, Lloyd Kaufman has successfully translated the essence of Troma films into literary form through the use of personal anecdotes, authentic dialogue, jokes, easy to follow recipes and lists of lessons that are both entertaining and insightful. From its glossy color cover to the comprehensive list of Troma films at the end, "All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger" is filled with photos, illustrations, and assorted graphic organizers that break up the pages and make reading fun. Come on! Treat yourself and "Troma-tize" your bookshelf! You won't regret it!
