Rating: Summary: Public and private person seperate Review: Die-hard fans of the singer will naturally raise skepticism of this read. In addition, Kelly discredits herself in one section of the book that deals with Peter Lawford. She quotes him on a certain date, and it was past the date he bought the farm. However, most of the book is cited with references. And for those in doubt, the inexcusable incident with the employee at the casino in Atlantic City was shown on the CBS Evening News. If you're still in doubt, then you probably still believe that there was no police violence towards Rodney King. If Sinatra's music moves you, as it does myself, then by all means enjoy it. But don't make the mistake of thinking that because someone's talents elicit feel-good emotions, you would love him personally. Entertainers (much like politicians) are supposed to make us feel good. I do take issue with Kelly's not acknowledging him as a great artist, arguably the greatest entertainer of the century. He got to the top not because of connections, but because he was obsessed with his craft, studied the great singers and musicians of the day and perfected a style he invented. If this were not true, there wouldnt be a mass of stars who emulate him, sometimes without even realizing it. In conclusion, for his artistry, read Will Friedwald's book. And on a personal level, beware of those who put up a good front. Who among us have never been mislead by someone who seems angelic on the outside, and then, down the road, we learn the true character. Watch that video of Atlantic City. Giving $$$$ to charities and making sure it gets in the papers is self-serving, serves as a tax write-off, and many of the stars are not connected in the least.

Rating: Summary: Sensationalism to the extreme Review: His Way is utter garbage and it amazes me that even in 1999, people still read ANYTHING written by Kitty Kelley. Yes, the book does read interesting, but then again, so does the STAR or the ENQUIRER...but I wouldn't put too much stock in any of it. Kelley's sources for her info are laughable....a friend of an aunt of the daughter of the sister of one of Sinatra's housekeepers, etc. Even if you don't question her sources validity, then look to the claims of the secret FBI files. When this book was written, it might have been easy to lie to the public about Sinatras FBI files, but since he's died, they have been opened to the public....the world held it's breath as they read the contents. And what was it...not much? Nothing shocking...a few brawls when he was young, etc. As far as her alleging that he abused people, why is it that Mia Farrow speaks of him to this day as if he were an angel. Who are you going to believe...Kelley or Mia Farrow herself. Don't waste your money on this type of garbage. It was an easy way for someone of Kelley's limited writing talents to make a quick buck. But yet, the mindless masses in America buy into this type of "literature" and continually keep feeding the machine that produces the filth at hand. A quick comparison if you will, ...the movie JFK was very interesting, but by it's authors own admission, very exaggerated and many times completely speculated and made up. It is my belief that most of Kelley's His Way is her own fantasized belief about the life of Frank Sinatra. When the book came out, most of Hollywood and even members of the press, rallied behind Sinatra, and when possible those who were mentioned in Kelley's book came forward to denounce her statements. If the book is still to be circulated, it should be done so as a work of fiction, or it should come with a disclaimer, stating how many of her allegations have since been disproven, and listing the myriads of actors and musicians who came forth and utterly refuted her claims. Stay away from this, and any other Kitty Kelley book!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I am confident that there are alot of Sinatra fans out there that will not like what they read here. No one likes the truth when it is not all rosey. I think Ms. Kelly did an exceptional job. It's no secret that Sinatra only got where he was because of his mob ties, and not on his talents. He honestly wasn't that good. There are already books that paint the "pretty" picture, it's time the truth came out. If Ms. Kelly seems "biased", well then so are the other books published on Sinatra that only tell "one" side. The book was difficult to put down, exciting and very informative. Even though I already knew how the man really was, again, no secrets. If they were all lies, unsubstantiated facts, she wouldn't have been able to publish it. Nor would the family have fought so hard trying to stop it.
This is an excellent read for biography buffs.
Rating: Summary: Fun Fiction Review: I didn't know Frank was in the mob and was required to bed down every new star in Hollywood, oh yea an then there was the part about him and Jack Ruby... If you have ever read one of her books then this is the same thing, an easy to read book full of juicy rumors and assumptions that are fun to read. My only complaint is that I think her legal team probably goes over the test better then the editors, some cuts here and there would have made it moves a bit faster. This book is like a 350 page Start Tabloid issue devoted to Frank, if that is your type of thing this is a good book for you. IF you are after an unbiased story I would keep looking.
Rating: Summary: Suspension of disbelief? Review: I have to admit to being attracted by any biography with the word "unauthorized" in the title. There is always the possibility that buried somewhere within is a single sentence that sheds more light on a personality than a thousand volumes of authorized accounts. What was Sinatra really like? What did he, above anything, not want you to know about him? Unfortunately Kelley attacks Sinatra with about as much grace as would result from you trying to take out the pit of a cherry using a pneumatic drill. Jumping from one disparaging story to another with barely an adjoining passage, she pours acid on every facet of Sinatra's life, challenging almost every aspect of his personality and career. Much of what she writes about could be part true, but it would be stretching the bounds of imagination to believe that it has not been significantly doctored or worded to make him sound truly like a Sinat-rat almost every moment he was awake. I found myself growing tired of the incessant, disjointed jumps from one ludicrous act to another with barely a breath. By the end, I felt that rather than knowing a little more about Sinatra than I did before, I just had a series of acts of indiscretion taped together unevenly, without ever feeling like the author was trying to understand who her subject was or what drove him to continue as an upper echelon performer for so long. It's an entertaining read, don't get me wrong, but is about as structured and insightful as a house of cards. She doesn't quit throwing darts but unfortunately not many of them hit the target.
Rating: Summary: if only half of it is true Review: if only half of this book is true it means that Sinatra was both a monster and a musical genius...thats his appeal that someone so capable of such ugliness can continually produce such consistently beautiful music....the man was the finest pop singer to walk the planet
