Summary: Excellent history of the band. Must for any fan.
Review: Excellent. The best written account of Pearl Jam that I have read. I was most impressed by the nuggets of information that I didn't know about previously, especially the alternate version of the "Jeremy" video

Summary: Borrow from a friend
Review: First to of all I just want to say this book is imformative and I will recommend it to any Pearl Jam fan. The book however starts off on a very confusing path through the many bands they went through before forming Pearl Jam. Then, finally you come out of the mess of the first 3 or 4 chapters to the band's release of Ten. These chapters display great amount of description on the band's first years and unfornately this does not continue on through the rest of the book. The next chapters tell the life of Eddie Vedder and the turbulent years that have greatly influenced his music. The rest of the book is about the band's following albums but it lacks the description that was used for the section of the book focused on Ten. The second half of the book is when the author gets a little anti-PJ saying that there anti-fame and battle against ticket master were just publicity stunts. However she shows some evidnce that they were at fault as thier inability to mount a tour or cancel them at the final minute left many fans to distrust them.A good read but a little too anti-pearl Jam.

Summary: Great book a must read for any Pearl Jam fan
Review: Five Against One: The Pearl Jam Story was the best book I have read in the past 5 years. From start to finish it has nothing but useful information about the worlds greatest band Pearl Jam. From the bands origins to the troublesome life of Eddie Vedder this book has it all. Everyone go out and get a copy.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A great reference to everything you need to know about PJ.
Review: Gives detailed account of the band member's early life. Great account of Eddie's childhood. Thorough description of the band's music and their life on the road. A must have for any true Pearl Jam fan.

Summary: Neely Against Vedder: The Five Against One Story
Review: I have a hard time understanding how someone who is ostensibly both a journalist and a Pearl Jam fan could write something like "Five Against One". I could detect no journalistic integrity nor any love for the band in this book. "Five Against One" is not about the music of Pearl Jam, nor can it honestly be called "The Pearl Jam Story", despite the subtitle. While this book does contain some interesting facts about the band and its members, Neely's real goal seems to be to shoot down Eddie Vedder. The majority of the book reads like a malicious tabloid kiss-and-tell confessional.

Summary: Good Book...Basic Info...Maybe too one sided!
Review: I have read this book and found it to be an overall good read. The first half may be a little boring and drawn out, the second half seemed to be a little too focused on Eddie. However, I think people would find this to be an enjoyable read.

Summary: Detailed and Entertaining
Review: I loved this book, and would give this book 5 stars, but I reserve that rank to the great classics. FIVE AGAINST ONE isn't literary genius, but is still an excellent read. Neely is very objective in her book, seperating the myths of the Pearl Jam legend from the facts of the Pearl Jam reality. I found myself cringing from time to time, mainly because Neely doesn't pull too many punches...Eddie isn't portrayed as the nicest guy around, and I came away from the book feeling very sorry for Dave Abbruzzese, who obviously contributed quite a bit of information about his conflicts with Vedder. Since much of the book focuses on Eddie and Dave, there leaves litte room for info about Jeff, Stone, and Mike, outside of the pre-PJ chapters. Still, the book is very entertaining, revealing some neat tidbits about the band's history.

Summary: this book is awsome
Review: I ordered this book off the net not to long ago and I got finished with it and it has so much good infromation and it tells some weird stuff about Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready I think they are the craziest in the band. So if I were you I would read it.

Summary: If you love Pearl Jam, read this book!
Review: I read Kim Neely's "Five Against One: The Pearl Jam Story" in one night--it was absolutely engrossing. The book is well written, organized, thorough, and often surprising.

The author debunks much of the popular mythology surrounding Eddie Vedder, offering instead the profile of a somewhat flawed, sometimes self-serving and always unpredictable "regular guy" who made his way to the top through determination and will rather than dumb luck.

I admit, I felt a little guilty reading the accounts of Eddie's past, especially those provided by his (step) father. I would caution readers to keep in mind that the author uses mostly second- and third-hand accounts to piece together her depiction of Vedder, and as far as I know, the singer was not involved in the creation of the book in any way. In fact, I found myself frequently wondering, as I read the book, how he would react to reading those accounts (and how I would react, if I were him!).

Although some of the accounts related in the book are unflattering to Vedder (and contradict his long-standing public persona), the author ultimately gives her readers a more realistic and human hero: an intelligent, ambitious, amiable, and hugely talented young man who, in his time--and ours--became a legend.

In addition to the compelling section devoted to Eddie Vedder, the book covers all aspects of Pearl Jam, from inception to stardom: its origin, the tours, the sudden and overwhelming popularity, the backlash, the battles (with Ticketmaster, other bands, MTV, and each other), and the uncertain road ahead.

No matter what interviews or biographies I read about Pearl Jam, I will always be loyal to the band--especially Eddie. I met him once accidentally, and he was very nice. No book will change my perception; however, I enjoyed this book immensely and wonder, now, how Eddie and the band feel about it. Perhaps they will publish an autobiography and set the record straight...?

Summary: A book by a jealous woman
Review: I think it's obvious that this whole bitter book is driven by Kim Neely's unrequited love for Eddie Vedder. Notice how she has nothing but bad things to say about his wife. Get over yourself Kim! We all love Eddie, but there's only one of him and he's taken already.
