Rating: Summary: REally GReat Read Review: It didn't go into as much detail as I would have liked, but it was still a very fulfilling, well written read. In fact I liked it so much I am buying the less-proclaimed Queen of Noise.
Rating: Summary: REVELATIONS GALORE..but not enough. Review: My dad bought this book for me on my thirteenth birthday and I was awed. Since then, I have probably read this book over and over. Although I do not see Courtney as a pleasant person, she has lived a life less ordinary and she is a quirky, odd person at that. There were many details that were left out of this book (her plastic surgery, her towering height and the allegations towards her possible involvement in Kurt's death). Melissa Rossi's "Queen of Noise" is better, in my opinion. Overall, "Courtney Love: The Real Story" is a must-have for any true Courtney Love/Hole fan.
Rating: Summary: Bought and paid-for 'Spin' Review: You don't have to be a whore to write something like this, but it helps.
Rating: Summary: a.k.a. Amanda's Bible Review: My parents once picked this book up at a flea market for me, and I read it in one day, and have read it over and over again. It really has become sort of a Bible for me. From her troubled childhood, to her psuedo-groupie days, to her historical marriage, Courtney has certainly lead a life less ordinary, and a very inspiring one at that, at least for me. I've read that people think of this book as very biased; I don't agree. I think there is plenty of incriminating information on Courtney that has even made me think twice about her. Very few reviewers of this book, especially the online ones, have actually met Courtney themselves, so they have no right to say that it doesn't accurately represent Courtney's life. I would believe Courtney's story coming from a friend, rather than from a stranger to both myself and Courtney, a lot more. It is very inspiring, and an all-around great read for anyone, if just for a dose of trashy celebrity dirt.
Rating: Summary: Poppy Honors Love in This Illuminating Bio Review: Poppy Z. Brite did an excellent job in penning this revealing bio of one of the most controversial figures in recent rock history. Courtney has lived her life on her own terms, thus ignoring the rules dictated by a mainstream society that applauds mediocrity. Because Love broke the rules, she is routinely attacked through catty writing and acidic soundbites. Brite went against the grain by presenting a book that does not chastise the "girl gone bad", but instead truthfully documents a life lived fantastically. Great job, Poppy!
Rating: Summary: "If Glastonbury had a stamp my head would be on it." Review: "Not a woman but a force of nature"? A ledgend in her own mind more like. As fake as a wedding cake and as insidious as heroin. Comes on like a beautiful and charismatic dream but ultimately bad news. Anything written with Courtney's consent should be viewed as fiction.
Rating: Summary: I have to give it to her.. Review: Courtney is a good actress. She has my favorite author fooled. As biased as I may sound, this book was a horrible portrayal of Courtney. Most people who didn't know anything about this woman would actually feel pity for her. If one actually has even the slightest hint of an idea about what Courtney is really like, they'll realize this book is overflowing with bs. Poppy Z. Brite is an ingenious writer, but I despise this book.
Rating: Summary: poor little Courtney Review: As much as I admire Poppy Z Brite as an author, I was extremely disappointed with this book!It seemed to be very biased, almost as if Courtney paid her to write it. Yeah, Courtney had a bad childhood(we do live in a nation of victims afterall). She seems to be making excuses for her behavior by blaming it on her parents. Autism?,Acid at 4? doubtfull(coulda happened-i wasnt there).Lets get out the Violins folks. Courtney is another one of that really irritating breed that haunts the punk-rock music scene- The Trust Fund Punk. They have money- they dont have to grow up.Im Glad I got this book out of a dollar bin! I sold it to half price books for 2!
Rating: Summary: Complex Review: I have been a fan of Hole and Courtney Love for some time, and this book was just wonderful. Brite's writing is very intriguing, and I plowed through the hardcover in 3 days. A life so complex, full, and not yet finished being lived, Courtney was done justice by this author and writing style. Even a reader who is not a fan would enjoy this book, which reads like a twisted fairy tale.
Rating: Summary: the book with the most cake? Review: when i first bought this book i thought it was wonderful. i mean, thewriting is fantastic, and it's great to finally learn abit aboutcourtney love's background. i was enthrawled with it. but then i began to actually read every word. the problem here is that Poppy z. Brite has made courtney out to be the victim 100% of the time. generally , she was, but when Billy Corgan, Kurt Cobain (especially), and Kat Bjelland came up in the book, it was insinuated that they had done everything in their power to destroy courtney. most specifically, ms. brite attacked Kurt Cobain for heroin use, and for overall putting courtney in a grumpy mood. not once did she mention how Courtney attacked him, cheated on him, or how in the last days of his life, Kurt was most serious about getting a divorce and cutting courtney out of his Will. hmmmmmmmm.... bottom line: this book is great for background knowledge of Courtney Love, but don't take everything to literally. when you get to the middle chapters, you have to realize that Courtney was not the only victim in that relationship - he killed himself, and she wasn't helping him stay. but,it's great writing, even for a load of bs.
