Summary: A Journey to the heart of Manson
Review: I have never been a big fan of Marilyn but I was interested in his work and about him. This book helps you understand who he is and why he is such a shock to our society. Even if your not a fan of Marilyn i recommend you reading it.

Summary: a riveting, can't-put-it-down account of Manson's life
Review: As a fan of Marilyn Manson, I was anxious to get my hands on this book--well, I finally did on 10/12, and I read every word in less than two hours! I devoured this book like a hungry cannibal in a graveyard! I agree with other reviewers who have said that everyone, no matter if they are a fan or not, should read this book. It is fascinating and it gives great insight into Manson's life and times and perhaps explains accurately how and why he has become who he is today. Hail Marilyn!

Summary: Mr. Manson deserves some respect
Review: This book has made me realize that Mr. Manson is a human being, just as we are. He's human, which explains why he did all the nasty and horrible things he did. Many people hate this man... but we are literally looking at a cracked mirror view of this man due to the media, narrow-minded schools, teachers, and church leaders. This man deserves respect for doing all the things he does without shame, which is thorougly written out in this biography. Highly advise humans of all races to read and understand this very misunderstood man who posesses a different sort of intelligence.

Summary: Interesting. Intriguing. Somewhat lacking in depth.
Review: First time I've plunged into a book and been unable to stop reading in a long, long time.

Overall the tone is very matter-of-fact, though it's Laugh Out Loud funny at times. The first half was very intriguing for me, due to my personal involvement with the South Florida music scene. I suppose it should be noted that, as I read the book, I never felt "sorry" for Brian. Empathy, yes. I think many of us have had so-called traumatic childhood experiences. The second half details the decadence, debauchery, depravity, and extreme drug use of the band touring scene. (And I don't use any of those "D" words lightly.) How much is true and how much is exaggeration and/or mis-remembered memories is anyone's guess.

Where Brian stops talking and Neil Strauss starts writing is another mystery. A page at the beginning includes this disclaimer: "To protect the innocent, many of the names and identifying features of individuals in this book have been changed and several characters are composites." Thus, which tales are true and which are not is left murkily unstated, as well as unsubstantiated.

Loads of drugs, sex, and rock and roll. Some of the sexual escapades left me, while not exactly disgusted, rather disheartened. I got the impression that Brian/MM has become totally jaded. While I'm rather a misanthrope myself, his attitude at times struck me as crossing over to an arena in to which I'd just as soon not go. But, then, that's his "message", isn't it? He likes to push buttons. One event described in the book had me close to becoming nauseous. (I can only *imagine* what the Religious Right thought of the book! It's explicit, brutal, and very frank.) The world of being a rock star as described sounds totally degenerate, utterly without depth, and simply well, simplistic. It's not a pretty picture he paints. After reading the book, I can understand why so many bands disintegrate after their first couple of releases. It seems to be a hedonistic and nihilistic vacuum, combined with access to too many drugs and easy free-for-all sex (including anything and everything you could imagine), that could destroy the most creative and brilliant of artists. Or maybe MM is an extreme example? I dunno. After the name dropping, I tend to doubt it.

I'm not sure if Brian/MM wrote the book to hype his image or to truly give a more truthful account of his ideals. There is some mention of his philosophy, but mostly it's a voyeur's delight into the "dirty" background of the rock star lifestyle. Or at least, that's what stands out in my mind. But, then again, I'm familiar with LeVay's Satanism.

I loved the book. :-) I devoured it. :-) But, as I closed it, I felt sad. Sad for Brian, who apparently can no longer distinguish Brian from Marilyn; sad for the people who are so concerned about the influence of the band; sad that although I agree with most of what he purports to be saying, I'm left to wonder how sincere he really is and how much is just hype to advance his admitted ambition to be a rock star. A combination of both, I suspect. Idealism tends to fade quickly when dollars are the issue.

Summary: VERY interesting...
Review: This is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. In fact, I'm going to read it again because it is just so chock full of interpretation of nearly everything that can be philosophized, one doesn't give every curiousity some thought . Manson is a very good writer for someone who is not generally a writer first. He opens up the door to an ugly & harsh world that must be peered into to widen the horizons of perception.

Summary: Gotta read it!
Review: regardless if you are a fan of his music or ideas you must read this book. One of the few books that have dragged me into the pages wanting more. I have read few books cover to cover and this was one of the few. Sceptics of Manson and his ideas nead to gain new insight into his meaning and motive. The story is one that will turn the heads of anyone. Tell your friends and buy a copy for your minister.
