Rating: Summary: Not What I Expected Review: Sure, this is an interesting and entertaining story, but that's all it is; a highly glamorized story set to capture the last bit of fame from her fading star. I'm not bashing her, don't get me wrong, but this book departs so far from the myriad interviews, investigations, and other stories she's told and had told about her over the years, that it's more like I'm reading about someone other than Traci. I couldn't tell where fact ended and fiction began. I was disappointed, being someone who has been both in front of and behind the camera in the adult film world, because it read more like a publisher's "dream" story crafted to sell books with a Hollywood-style script that was simply attached to Traci's name. Again, I did like the book, but it was a big let down because it read like every other book written by a former porn star. I was surprised by a little-know book titled Cut Throat Business because it depicts the real inner workings of this industry. So if you by Traci's book, I also recommend that you by the other too, you won't be disappointed and you'll get a broader picture of this intriguing industry.
Rating: Summary: The Comeback Girl Review: The book is an easy read. Interesting that at that age anyone could fall prey to Immoral adults fixed on greed and pleasure. At the age of 15- I know my life could go in many directions. Great book. A must for teens to read. Great courage shown that you can be a victim and don't have to be a expenable youth.
Rating: Summary: good book, wild ride, but a little emptiness Review: This book is an exciting wild ride. I have always heard of Traci Lord's name being whispered by men as a secret knowledge. Her name makes people blush. I read the book in two days, she is a good writer. I believe she is self-delusional at times. I personally believe she probably was very mature for her age and in someways knew exactly what was happening to her (getting involved in the porn world) The great thing about Traci is she opens herself up to our judgements and her talent involved more than her past.
Rating: Summary: An opposite opinion Review: This book is nothing more than a publicity stunt and yet another attempt to blame others for the choices that we make. Traci obviously suffered some abuse but don't we all. Her discredit of the adult industry is interesting because without that past career, she would not be where she is today. I am a "porn star" myself and I know lots of others. Lots of them are happy, healthy women who are responsible for their choices and proud of them. She got mixed up with a bad crowd which from MY experience is the exception, not the rule in our industry. Don't waste your money on this book unless you support another form of exploitation by her and the publisher.
Rating: Summary: Traci is an inspiration Review: This is a fabulous book by a strong woman who has turned her tortured past into her current strength and has the energy left over to help others who have ended up in the sex industry at an early age. The one thing I kept thinking while reading was...it could have been me. Although the violence and neglect she experienced is more than most women suffer, we can all identify with the conflicting feelings about our sexuality experienced in this mysoginist world. If you are one of the lucky 60% of women who has not experience sexual violence, Traci's extreme experience may help you to sort out the more subtle (but similar) feelings you have from living in today's rape culture. Traci speaks with sincerity and intelligence. I'm very impressed and inspired.... To deny the truth of Traci's experience is to violate her once again. Fortunately, she appears strong enough to deflect such attacks these days. ...
Rating: Summary: Great biography, much better than expected! Review: This is a superb biography written by none other than Traci Lords herself. I usually am not all that thrilled with biography books, but this book was a pleasant surprise. If you are interested in Traci's career then you will be throughly engaged reading this book. There are also tons of photos throughout the book spanning her life. She isn't afraid to tell it how she remembers it and what she honesytly thinks of events earlier in her life. There are a lot of minute details and best of it...it never gets boring! Well done!
Rating: Summary: A Courageous Journey Review: This is an engaging, endearing, engrossing account of a brave person overcoming a harsh upbringing and considerable odds. Before I read this book, I knew nothing about Traci Lords except that she had been in porn and now she isn't. This book completely changed my opinion of her -- she is not a porn actress, she is a porn survivor.
In this well-written book, Traci very frankly and lucidly describes harrowing events which defined her early youth, including being raped, and witnessing her father beat her mother so badly she ended up in the hospital.
Traci's porn career began when she was 15, she had no parental figure in her life, and some greedy men realized they could use her for their own gain. I can't understand how anyone can read this story without feeling compassion for that young girl.
Some people seem compelled to lock Traci Lords in a box labeled "Trash". For me, she is glorious proof that there are second acts in American lives, and that we can overcome the failures and the obstacles of our past.
Rating: Summary: good book, wild ride, but a little emptiness Review: This is an excellent book. It cleared up allot of half-truths and non-truths for me. However, I couldn't give this book 5 stars because there seem to be huge gaps. Traci did one of her porn movies with the Porn King John Holmes and she never mentions him at all. She said she liked being kissed by a girl when she was young. But later when she did a scene with Ginger Lynn, she loathed the thought of kissing a girl. It only casually mentions her reunion with her mother. It never says if her mother has any explanations for abandoning her at her hippy ex-boyfriends house. Traci said she woke up on a few occasions to her mom's b/f staring at while while zipping up his pants, but it never explains how far he got or what exactly he was doing. I hoped she'd go into much more detail about why the FBI was hounding her even after her lawyer supposedly stopped them. The book never explains when the FBI finally did stop. It doesn't mention her current relationship with her sisters either. She says her dad doesn't approve of her, even now. But she never mentions how she discovered that. Again, it really is a great book. But there are just too many gaps. Hopefully the new paperback release with and extra chapter might clear some of this up?
Rating: Summary: Traci Lords'- the Writer Review: This is the story of a very interesting intelligent beautiful woman who doesn't try to be interesting which is what makes her interesting. She became famous so young & so boldly differently is one of the factors. If you were privy to see one of her X-rated films or any movie - you will notice she is quite a performer- it doesn't matter what she is acting- you believe it which is what made her a sucessful porn star & could make her a sucessful "legitimate" actress if only anyone could forget how powerful a bad reputation is in Hollywood- a town that should be forgiving.Perhaps she got herself exposed as underaged to get out of porn to be in A movies- this book won't answer many questions. This Book is an Excellent Read. When the book is over you have read the first half of a very good book ! The 2nd half of this book is too truthful & too private to print yet is what people bought the book for. What is written does deliver completely. Anyone who lived in the era of the early 1980's will understand & reminisce completely. Traci Lords' real name is Nora Kuzma yet she makes a point of stating that she wants no part in Pornography as it's damaging to anyone who works in it yet legally changed her name to the name to the X-rated stage name that she used in the short time she became famous making the sex films she is struggling to get away from the rest of her legitimate acting career which makes no sense. She claims it was because she couldn't hide under her real name. This is a great read by a great writer who needs a new editor who doesn't cut her book in half or perhaps she should wait until she is no longer embarassed by the truths that would fill the rest of the story as this is a thorougly engrossing read- which no former porn star has lived to tell as the rest have all committed suicide or died of aids. This book is a great performance but only half of one. Where is the other half of the book ????
Rating: Summary: Yet another attempt to cash in on the last moment of fame Review: This is typical, one moment she said there were no drugs. Now! there were drugs and booze. This lady is trying to cash in on her last moments of fame, well she knew what she was doing. Giving the readers a sob story with sexually explicit pictures, if she was so sincere she should have left out the pictures and got to the point such as what is wrong with the industry. Obviously she doesn't know enough about the industry since she was so doped up. Drugs and parties, anyone can figure out what will happen. A book I rather recommend is "Cut Throat Business, I am having the last word", a book written by a woman, film editor. She worked in the industry and she will tell the reader what really goes on and it is not 10 years ago that the story is referred to, this true story is fresh a revolves around the year of 2000-2002. Save your money on Traci Lords sob story and read a real story like Cut Throat Business, which it is.
