Rating: Summary: Getting ready for Just a Geek Review: I think that, in the end, this book will serve as an excellent primer for his book "Just a Geek". These stories are simply, very, very good. I couldn't put the book down. It's a very light and quick read, and it's lots and lots of fun! In particular, my favorite short story was when Wil "Teen Idol" Wheaton meets William Fdisking Shatner for the first time. Good, good stuff. I highly recommend it! I can't wait to pick up "Just a Geek"!
Rating: Summary: More than a one trick pony Review: I stumbled across WWdN a few months ago. Started reading it to kill time, got hooked, and now addicted. Needs to be a warning on his website. Anyhow, like many others, I learned of this book on the website. Figured, what the hell, WWdN is engaging, the book ought tobe as well. The book was finished about 2 hours after I started it. I am an avid reader (+200 novels a year) for many years, this is the first time I have ever written a review. The book is an easy read, flows well inside the stories and from story to story. As to the content, I was happy to see the depth of the person behind the keyboard writing it. This book is merely a sampling of what I now expect from Just a Geek. In it he covers items that strike home for me on many levels (from the teenage years and Car Wars to the loss of a loved one). The last story is probably the best as far as the scope of what it covers. All the stories though are as one in they show a side of a person, many people don't even see in people they have known for years. You get a look at his life from his eyes without the pompous self inflated egos you find elsewhere. Instead you find a real person, a good writer, and really good stories. Wil, if you read this, Just a Geek is your autobiography. What are you going to do after it? Simple, write more. You are a Sci-Fi geek (among seveal other styles of geek ), write what you know and enjoy. Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Rating: Summary: Heartfelt Review: A cool little book that speaks from Wil's heart. Well worth it.
Rating: Summary: Funny and touching! Review: I really enjoyed this book. I bought it because I always have fun reading Wil Wheaton dot net, and it's nice to see celebrities that come across as down to earth and genuine. The book really gives you a window to Wil's life, which is a lot more interesting than most geeks' lives, but what really sold it was the warm and friendly tone of the writing. I recognize some of my sensibilities in him, as well as my geek tendencies, and it felt more like it was an interesting story told to me by a good friend, as opposed to a regular really impersonal autobiography. As for the stories themselves, the Vegas one was great, and full of fun insights into Star Trek conventions, but I especially liked the touching story about saying goodbye to his Aunt Val's house. Looking forward to "Just a Geek".
Rating: Summary: Please sir, may I have some more? Review: The economy of words and page count in 'Dancing Barefoot' cannot belie the substance of this book. In 111 pages of first person narrative Wheaton draws the reader into places we've been and some that are unique to him. He's found his voice in the written word.
Rating: Summary: A needed experience Review: In Dancing Barefoot, Wheaton delivers to the geek in us all. He is not afraid to put it all out there, and I was not afraid to soak it all up. This book keeps an excellent pace and allows one to relfect upon their own life and experiences as Wil shares his. It left me laughing and wanting more.
Rating: Summary: Dancing Barefoot made me cry Review: I finished the book in about an hour and a half with distractions and mainly work getting in the way of my progress. For one, I would like to say that I am extremely happy with my purchase of this book. And though the price was on the high-end for a 114-page book, I don't regret it at all. As most anyone would know, after reading the WWdN, this book is actually 5 short stories that didn't quite fit with the flow of wil's much looked-after release of Just A Geek. Being a Star Trek fan, my favorite story in the book was The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants, which also happened to be the longest short story, coming in at 74 pages. Wil's writing style is fresh and deeply felt, which a lot of authors of late are missing. Since all of the stories are auto-biographical, we get to see a glimpse of what it was like actually being the actor behind the ill-fated Wesley Crusher: how it hurt to be snubbed by a boyhood hero, and what fun the other actors on the TNG set were. For me, being a fan/stalker/wanter of wil for so long and finally getting to read this book is like being able to bring home a good friend. I am eager to read wil's blog every day, and even more eager for Just A Geek to come out. Dancing Barefoot is not only witty and insightful, it brought tears to my eyes, and made me laugh out loud. I highly suggest this book for anyone who would like a quick, good read, including those people who hated the character Wesley Crusher. Especially those who hate Wesley Crusher.
Rating: Summary: Short but sweet. Review: I bought "Dancing Barefoot" because I thought, "Hey, I enjoy reading Wil Wheaton's blog and he's really funny, so I'll enjoy his book, right?" Right. Even though I've read these stories on his blog before, there's something about having a book in one's hands that makes the experience even better and more personal. About the stories: there are five of them, and all are funny, touching, and true. I suppose that's what makes the stories even better than they would be just by themselves; the personalized voice of each and the fact that they are true give honest glimpses into a person's life. Wil's use of humor in his vignettes make the reading time fly by. Aside from getting his funny on, he also offers a few surprisingly heartfelt musings on certain aspects of his professional life, especially when it comes to meeting a certain childhood hero. By far, the best story is the last, "The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants." My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer, and as far as complaints so, that's small potatoes. This does offer a taste of what to expect from Wil Wheaton's forthcoming book, "Just a Geek." I can't wait. Well, I can, but I don't want to. Anyway, buy it, read it, and enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: WOW!!! Review: This was one of the best books I have EVER read. I got it in the mail yesterday and couldn't put it down. Wil Wheaton is an amazing writer and I look forward to reading his next book.
Rating: Summary: What and AWSOME book. Review: I'm and avid fan of WIL WHEATON, and during the several times i check his website, i discovered he was writing a book. When i new it was finally done, i quickly placed an order. This book is not the typical book written by a celebrity. This book is real, just like his website. The stories that are in the book are great and well written. And they are the most popular stories that have been on his site. Through his stories you see what Wil has been doing since his days in the Star Trek genre. The stories vary from playing games with his stepkids, enjoying the falling rain with his wife Anne, or his very first encounter with William Shatner. And now how he has re-embraced his Star Trek past. I STRONGLY reccomend everyone purchase this book, and visit his website. I for one has enjoyed the book from cover to cover, and look forward to the upcoming book "Just A Geek" This book is well deserving of the 5 STARS
