Rating: Summary: Misguided in the extreme Review: I read the excerpt from Edward Klein's book when it appeared in Vanity Fair and, as a result, I was interested to read Bergin's book as well. I'm completely mystified how he can attest to this memoir being a flattering account of Carolyn Bessette and a story she would have wanted told. It seems to me that for an intensely private person, as he described her in the book, this is precisely the opposite of what she would have liked and, quite frankly, is in the exact same vein as Klein's book which he dismisses. We live in a celebrity obsessed culture which is the only reason anyone would read this book, because if we had the decency as a society to be interested in things of actual value, instead of who is sleeping with whom, having abortions, and other exceptionally private matters that no-one besides the individuals involved should know about, something like this would never be published. Obviously Bergin knows this better than anyone. What I can't understand is that he mentions several times in the book that he hated the way reporters would misinterpret his statements. Why then did he even speak to Ed Klein when he started asking him questions about Carolyn? It was clear that Klein wanted to write an inflammatory book because that is the kind of book that sells. Not an account of what a lovely decent person she was. To reveal intimate details of a personal relationship to line one's own pockets is in poor taste in the extreme and in addition does nothing but to further perpetuate this invasive investigation into her and JFK Jr.'s private lives not to mention hurt the feelings of their family members that are still alive. It is one thing to write a tell-all book in order to make money. That is his prerogative, however low-grade. But to promote it under the guise of being a vehicle of closure for him and his family is utter hogwash. He says in the letter on his official website that the media spun his book in a negative way without ever bothering to read it. Well I read it, am a journalist myself, and cannot possibly imagine a non-negative way of rating it.
Rating: Summary: pathetic Review: I read this book and have to admit that I'm ashamed. I thought I was going to read the story of love gone wrong. Instead I read a self-serving poorly written(and I'm being generous) series of sentence fragments! He portrays the object of his affections as a nonchalant woman of questionable values, flighty in the extreme, and emotionally unbalanced. This might be acceptable to some, except that the woman is dead. She can't even defend herself. (Lord knows, if someone was going to broadcast to the world that I had two abortions, one miscarriage, and an extramarital affair, I'd like to have my chance to answer.) Finally, Carolyn Bessette's parents lost two of their daughters in a tragic accident. If Mr. Bergin was as in love as he claims, if he cares about her reputation, why would he publish something that would be so painful for a parent to read. If anyone really wants to read this book, do yourself a favor and check it out of the public library. Don't give this man any more money. Trust me, you probably won't want to keep the book anyway.
Rating: Summary: embarassing!!! Review: We grew up with Mike and we wish he would stop mentioning our "small blue collar town" because he's giving it a bad name!!! SHAME ON YOU, Mike, LET THIS TRAGIC STORY(not YOUR love story) REST IN PEACE!!
Rating: Summary: A good book Review: Michael Bergin has every right to write about his own experience which is not some CIA classified secrets. His story is sad and touching. Reading his book is lke reading letters from your friend.
Rating: Summary: Michael ..... You touched my heart!!!! Review: With great interest I read last night Michael Bergin's book. His writing style literally made me want to know everything about his relationship to his former girlfriend Carolyn Bessette Kennedy from the beginning until the end. I really don't know who Michael Bergin was nor did I ever see "Baywatch" on TV (it is possible!). But I am very interested in the lives of the late JFK jr. and his wonderful wife - and I certainly know where and with who I was when the sad news of their tragic death made it around the globe -. I purchased Michael Bergin's book to get also a different view about the relationship between John jr. and Carolyn. I really liked Michael Bergin opened his heart and told us his side of the story. After all I admire Carolyn, she seemed sometimes lost and very insecure, other times very resolute and powerful but she was such a beautiful and kindhearted woman. Indeed Mr. Bergin's story is quite sad and I hope he has finally found the peace he needs to move on with his own life. I know he loved Carolyn from the deepest of his heart. She will be always remembered special to him. His feelings for her were the ONLY reason to bring this book to life. I also know how it feels to still love someone but this person is out of one's reach......
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable book to read, which reveals nothing... Review: Having finished this book, only one question came to mind -what was the point? The book is sold with the JFK Jnr angle, yet are we to believe that Carolyn never mentioned JFK Jnr to the author? (other than to deny the relationship even existed). That she married John John without even warning the author, her lover at the time?! Clearly she and the author were close, so I found this hard to believe. This book is very author/Carolyn focussed and that relationship came to nothing, so why even write about it? The author spends time setting up his history (so the reader will think he is a good guy?). I did find him a genuine guy who got caught up with a woman who may have been interesting, but sounds quite vacuous and needy. I enjoyed reading the book, couldn't put it down in fact, but where were the JFK Jnr tidbits? Where was the background on how he and Carolyn met, why they fell in love? We don't know because the author doesn't know either. Why is JFK Jnr on the cover when he is barely mentioned? Carolyn on her own does not justify a book, and neither does the author.
Rating: Summary: Illuminating Love Drama Review: JFK, Jr. got the girl in appearance, but he never won over her heart. True love is not something you can buy with money. Carolyn succumbed to social pressure like all of us and married the prince, but alas, money and social status are not everything in life. From the story, we can learn about the human mind game in love relationship and also the tragic drama of materialistic society. Thumbs up to Michael Bergin for his candid account and witty writing style. I enjoyed the book very much.
Rating: Summary: Shame on you Review: The publisher and the writer of this book should be ashamed of themselves for this cheap, exploitative, and often inaccurate piece of trash. There is no motive but money to explain revealing the secrets of a dead woman who is not here to defend herself or even perhaps set the record straight.
Rating: Summary: A heartfelt and sincere love story Review: After watching a few interviews with Michael Bergin over the past few weeks and reading different articles in the press, I felt he was being treated unfarily by a lot of people - mainly the likes of Star Jones on ABC's "The View." I decided to buy the book and I'm glad I did! With as many books out there already about the personal lives of Carolyn Bessette and John Kennedy, Jr (as well as the entire Kennedy family) I found it strange that the press would be so inclined to come down on him so hard over his decision to write this book. If other people write about Carolyn's life (which obviously also involves Michael) it's only fair that this man be given an opportunity to share his personal story - which I felt he did in a very classy way. I've read a lot of autobiographies over the years and I have to say this one is among my all-time Top Ten. This heartfelt and sincere love story really touched me and I was moved to tears on several occassions. It was obvious that he loved and cared for Carolyn very much. With all the pressure from the press over the years, I'm sure a heavy burden was lifted off Michael's shoulders by coming forth and sharing his story. Aside from the relationship angle with Carolyn, the stories about his rise to fame as the "first" male supermodel is very inspiring. With all that this incredible young man has accomplished, I'm sure there's more to Michael Bergin that will in time be revealed. Thanks for writing such a classy book - it's a true reflection of the man your family and friends should be proud of.
Rating: Summary: A Love Story...... (Hope you feel better Mr. Bergin) Review: I found this book to be a good description of a secretive, and yet very sad love story: He is broke, but beautiful. She is a princess who wants her throne, in NYC, Sex, Drugs, Money, and Rock and Roll. Mr. Bergin writes about the Carolyn he knew. Though, through this book he also tries to fight back the bad press about her, after all he knew her better. For the people who at some point have found themselves in a love triangle, this story has it all. I enjoyed reading this book not only for its relevance to one of the most enigmatic women in America's Royalty, but because its a moving love story that sadly ends up in a tragedy.
