Bob Harrington and Sherry Eaker provide information that will make the process a lot easier for the novice, and provide interesting reading for the established professional. Included are helpful chapters on structuring your show, selecting music, working with a music director, and dealing with club owners. There's even an appendix about recording your first CD. If you're just staring out, this book will make the process a lot easier.
