Summary: A wonderful autobiography
Review: This was the first book that I bought just because of the reviews written at Amazon. I'm adding my 10 to everyone elses. I liked the candor and the humor. It doesn't read like a nearly 40 year-old book (I'm not sure what I mean by that but I think I mean something). Like some other autobiographies, sex is mentioned less often than it would if a truthful listing of priorities was made, but I wasn't reading it for that kind of an education.

Summary: My favorite Marx Brother
Review: Harpo has always been my favorite Marx brother. Although he always played a mute character who was not terribly bright, he was still the easiest brother to like because of his childish behaviour and his plain brilliance as a physical comedian. Since I became a fan, my greatest wish had been to here this master of pantomime speak, even if it was only one word. I guess his often hilarious, always brilliant book is the closest I can get.

Summary: A Must Read - even for the casual marx brothers fan
Review: Read the first five pages and you'll be hooked! I guarantee it. Harpo's autobiography is the funniest, most enjoyable book I've ever read and re-read (5th time now). It's not only an in-depth and personal account of the Marx brothers' careers and personal lives, but a fascinating record of turn-of-the-century vaudville, and the artistic and literary world of the 1920's and 30's. His stories about the Algonquin Round Table are priceless! Harpo Marx inspired laughter through his film and TV work, but it is through this excellent book that you truly get a sense of how extraordinary this man was.

Summary: The best Marx Brother of them all!
Review: A book that is very hard to put down once you start reading.

Summary: This is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read.
Review: After reading the first 2 pages of this book, I handed it to my wife, asking her to read those same 2 pages to see if her reaction would be as strong as mine. I suppose it was, because I had to wait for her to finish the book, all 600 pages, before I could resume. Once I got the book back and began reading, I understood why my wife had seen fit to so brazenly commandeer it from me as she did. It turned out to be one of the most engrossing books I've ever picked up, from page 1 to the very end. I devoured the book in record time, finishing the last handful of chapters in a 6-hour read-a-thon on a lazy Sunday afternoon/evening. I was simply unable to put it down. Harpo, who never spoke a word on film, turned out to be a fascinating storyteller. He lived a very full life, and recounts it with enormous humor, candor, charm, and what I perceived to be total honesty. He never seems to go out of his way to make you laugh (though he is very funny) as his brother Groucho did in his auto-bio "Groucho Speaks", an

Summary: Harpo Speaks!
Review: When I first got Harpo Speaks! I was just going to look through the pictures and then return it. Something told me to read it. Not just part of the book, *all* of the book. So I began to read. I couldn't stay away! I wanted to know more. I had to know more. I stayed up till 4:00 am finishing the book and when I finished it I cried. I didn't know what to do. So I cried. A great man had died but he still lived. Within me and all his fans. Love is not enough for Harpo. He is worshiped

Summary: Harpo Speaks!!!!
Review: A great book from start to finish. When I bought this book, I didn't think I'd ever finish it, being almost 600 pages with small print. But, Harpo hooked me in and I couldn't escape. His life was facinating and fun. I found the begging a little more interesting. It tells of him and his brothers growing up and living in New York up until their first movie. This part of the book is the most fun because you learn so much about the brothers. The middle and end are fun also, but I found the first 200 pages or so the most amazing

Summary: Reading Harpo is always reading for the first time
Review: Though it is tempting to agree with the comment that "Harpo Speaks" should be read slowly because you only get to read it for the first time once, I have read it for the first time three times now, and find Harpo's approach to life and laughter renews both itself and the reader with every re-read. Of many praiseworthy elements in "Harpo Speaks," perhaps the most important is the sense of acceptance that Harpo brings to the experience of life; whether being thrown out a window in primary school days, or being arrested for (amongst other things) impersonating himself in Los Angeles, Harpo's approach to life is a giant "yes!" I've rarely read a book that made me feel as good, and perhaps never read one that made me feel better

Summary: Harpo Writes !!!
Review: Plain and simple - if you enjoy "the boys" you will love this book.

I began to become a "Marxist" when I was 12 years old with my first viewing of ANIMAL CRACKERS and years later has not stopped. Early on in my Marx Brothers fascination I found this book at the public library and became engrossed in it. As I saw more of their films (this was when VCR's were not common and you had to wait for their films to be shown on PBS or your UHF station)I read it over and over to find the story behind the film I had just seen or what the Marxes were doing at that time. I even used it as my seventh grade photo essay topic (grade A+, thanks Harpo!).

As I got older I bought my own copy (I'm sure the library was annoyed by me taking out the same book over and over again every three weeks) and have read it many times. Harpo's storytelling is insghtful, amusing and clean.

I believe the book was first published in 1961 and was a sucess - many wanted to hear what Harpo had to say (since he never spoke on the screen). You get to hear about the Marxes climb to fame, Harpos feelings about his brothers, their real life comical adventures and Harpos own personal adventures.

Harpo was a distinct comedic personality in film and a loving, wonderful human being. Read his story, it will make you feel good.
