Rating: Summary: Finally, a no-BS education in making it. Review: After reading this book, I realize what every other book on the subject was trying to say, but never really got there. Definately a MUST for anyone interested in quitting their day-job and playing full time.

Rating: Summary: WOW! This is for sure the best book I have read about making Review: Back in my Berklee days I attended a course with Peter entitled "Entrepreneurship" which opened my eyes to issues regarding both making music and doing business. It taught me that neither of these areas can exist without the other. I am still using the material and resources Peter handed out on this course and I am very excited that all this information and a lot more is now available in this excellent book. A quick look through the pages gives you an impression of its well-organised structure and the incredible amount of resources that it contains. The book gives you an in-depth yet easily accessible look at the music industry, business planning, copyright, PR, demo production, gigs, media, radio stations, etc..... really, all you need! As the Internet is about to change the entire music industry I am pleased that Peter devotes an entire section to this medium and how musicians use it for promotion. This is underlined by the most helpful list of books, magazines, associations and web sites I have come across. Go, get it!

Rating: Summary: A truly comprehensive guide to independent music success Review: I've seen lots of strategical guides out there for independent success, but none come closer to the facts of the matter than The Self-Promoting Musician. How to write a business plan, use the Internet for maximum exposure, secrets for better radio airtime, getting the most out of every gig, how to avoid contract and major label traps, and the most comprehensive musician's resource list in the world (continually updated on the author's website) are just some of the things you'll get out of this book. Jonathan Fine, Director for A&R, Q Records, writes "Finally a book that clearly states how to get into and succeed in this competitive music business. I wish this book existed back when I was just starting out. It would have saved me $1,000,000 worth of mistakes." "If you are looking to make a living in music, this is the first book to read! It's loaded with knowledge on how to be successful in the music industry. The resource lists are worth the price of the book alone." -Dr. Scott Fredrickson, Chair, Loyola Music Business Program. This book is guaranteed to help any aspiring musician navigate this tough industry.
Rating: Summary: It's a whole new music business out there! Review: Many changes are afoot in today's music business. The market for music is segmenting at a dizzying rate; converging industries are creating new business models which, in turn, are spawning new music career paths; the traditional recording industry is downsizing while the indie sector swells; and musical artists have new, powerful tools at their disposal for igniting long-term careers. Hi, my name is Peter Spellman. I wrote this book to provide guidance through all these immense changes. In it you'll find practical and immediately useful principles to help set your sail through the changing currents of today's and tomorrow's music biz. Whether it's understanding record company dynamics, writing a business/career plan, finding hidden performance opportunities, securing radio airplay, or tapping the power of the Internet to mount a global presence, "The Self-Promoting Musician" is designed to give you what you need to make your mark in this crazy world of music. In my many years as both a professional musician and as Director of the Career Development Center at Berklee College of Music, I've come to see that a successful music career can be summarized in the following equation: Talent + Information x Energy = Success The musician provides the first and third ingredients; "The Self-Promoting Musician" provides the middle: useful knowledge and detailed guidance for creating a successful 21st-century music career. Hope you enjoy it and please let me know what you think!
