Rating: Summary: Unfortunately, most of them are dead, so it's "safe" writing Review: Not a bad introduction to the sleazier and self-indulgent sides of Hollywood. A town where things can get pretty tawdry when life gets boring, which seems to have been quite often. Considering that most of the subjects are dead, who's to know fact from fantasy? Still, a read when you're stuck in the house or on a runway. There seem to be problems with "HB-Part 3", as they keep pushing back the date of publication. Hmm...Maybe all of the subjects of that daily diary aren't dead! Rumor also has it that the European versions of Mr. Anger's "diaries" are much more explicit. Presumably, can't be sold here because of potential lawsuits(?). One has to wonder why Mr. Anger would stay in such a toxic wasteland all of his life since he can't seem to find one positive thing to say about H'wood. To quote a better scribe, "Those who can, do. Those who can't (in this case, at least) write. As there are sequels, one might safely say that these writings haven't even proven cathartic for Mr. Anger. An apt name, by the way.
Rating: Summary: Morbid, sleazy, inky Review: Hollywood's underbelly. Takes me back to the 50's when I was a little girl and saw inky, grainy pictures of actresses in tabloids who were either drug addicts or found dead. Because I didn't understand dope addiction or suicide, those photos seemed mysterious like pictures taken of ghosts. The two most horrific pictures in this book are Jayne Mansfield's dog decapitated and Ginger Rogers without makeup.
Rating: Summary: A knock down, no holds barred expose. Review: Various anecdotes on has beens and the once mighty fil stars that shone brightly one minute; and were snuffed in the next. Contains info on forgotten headline screaming affairs; murders and innuendo.
Rating: Summary: It revealed the real picture of Hollywood. Review: Hollywood Babylon was an excellent book. It revealed that Hollywood was covered up by glamor. This book was fairly easy to read with its common language and short sentence length. The main focus of the book was about the sex, drugs, alcohol, rapes, and murders that occured in Hollywood. The book was very straight forward with the details. Kenneth did not attempt to conceal anything. The pictures in the book helped to get the full picture of what was being described. I would not recommend this book if you are easily offended. There is some vulgur language and vivid details.
Rating: Summary: a very unusual book Review: Not for the faint hearted! this is THE classic book at what hollywood is at its core a very unusual book the Author, Kenneth Anger reveals alot of repulsive info about various popular stars sometimes backed up with up photographs this also has a number of shocking photographs such as the actual police photographs of the black dahlia murder victim her body was cut in half and hollowed out and dumped in a vacant lot in L.A. for all to see they never caughthim and it remains one of the most horrible murders in US history even in present time a full sixty years latera most unusual book.
Rating: Summary: Read it in a tabloid frame of mind. Review: A fun book, as long as you're more firmly attached to rumor than truth. There's a lot more information out there about several of these scandals, but this book provides a quick survey and a good intruduction. Just remember it's ALL gossip, and should be taken as such -- that is, there's some grains of truth, but separating out the chaff of lies and speculation is impossible. And since the author only tells the most titillating side of every story, there's a heck of a lot of chaff. But it's great fun -- just don't take it seriously.
Rating: Summary: Yeah, it was great! Review: Ooh, it was marvellous. I just liked it. It's that sordid stuff about stars we all want to believe and there's good old Kenneth showing it's all true.Read it and weep (mainly with laughter.)
Rating: Summary: intriguing Review: always liked the book from the first time i read it many years ago. i'm just curious where the author got his information from. (rumors, inside information, etc...?) did Anger actually know some of the people in the book that he mentioned ?
Rating: Summary: Utter Balderdash Review: How anyone could be gullible enough to believe the easily-disprovable "facts" in this book is beyond me. Anger (a failed actor and director) got his revenge out on the town that scorned him. There are too many ludicrous factual errors and miscaptioned photos for me to list herein, but suffice it to say that (to paraphrase a comment on Lillian Hellman) every word in it is a lie, including "and" and "the." Legitimate historians everywhere should curse the existence of this book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent expose of old Hollywood Review: Anger's book is the best of its kind on old Hollywood. Lots and lots of rarely seen pictures make for some of the best scandals around. Much better than the first one.
