Summary: A Wonderful Book!
Review: I must say that this really is a wonderful book for multiple puposes. It is a great drawing guide for otaku artists, or artists who just wish to draw interesting and unique clothes. It is a great buy and definetly worth the money.

Summary: No one else can pull these things off...
Review: I often buy the Newsstand "Fruits" magazine at the Japanese bookstore. Most of us don't know that perhaps the greatest youth fashion is concentrated in Harajuku, Japan. Compared to America's casual, preppy and khaki "standard of style"...it's everything but dull. While America may have had it's "goth-style" come and go (which is currently popular among Japanese Visual-kei fans), Japan has it's own breeds of fashion genres. However, this book lacks the GAL style of Shibuya, Tokyo which is also an interesting native Japanese style.

The magazine sure has influenced my sense of style (well, nothing compared to these kids, but the more tame stuff). From Porter bags (They sell them in NYC now, but they're twice as expensive here than in Japan), Gravis shoes (I was only able to find them on the internet, they sell for about $75-$90 in the USA and $298-$980 in Japan, they often have special edition ones designed by J-pop musicians), and A Bathing Ape.

In fact, if you buy many Japanese trend magazines, you'll see many trends which will no doubt hit the USA in a few months (just like video games). I remember seeing the "kick boards" make it's way as a fashion accessory in Japan. In about 5 months I began seeing them on the streets in the USA. In Japan they were popular among business men and older teens, but when they came to the USA, little kids in elementary school grew an obsession with them and begin breaking their necks.

So if you wanna get a head start (and make your friends jealous) you might wanna look at this book (although I'd prefer the magazine since it's up-to date). If you can't find "Fruits" then get "Kerouac" (now called "KERA"). I also prefer "KERA" to "Fruits" it has a lot more pictures of japanese street fashion, more questions about fads and music, art etc.

Of course, I doubt that any sort of fashion boom would hit the USA like that in Japan. But there is expectations that the UK will experience one in the upcoming years. The UK and Japan have had a mutual exchange of fashion ideas for several years now. In fact, FRUITS once featured the streetwear of Covent Garden UK.

Summary: I adore this book!
Review: I'm obsessed with all things Japanese, so I found this book incredibly entertaining. I don't know how the kids in this book manage to pull of some of these styles, but they DO! Handmade clothes, foot-tall platform shoes, and hair in every color of the visible spectrum are just some of the things you'll see in this book. Short descriptions of the teenagers in the photos are provided, including where they acquired their ensembles and what their current obsession and "point of fashion" is. This book is pure Japanese pop-culture! The only gripe I have is that some of the text is hard to read against the photographs. Lime green and hot pink text probably wasn't a good choice.

Summary: FRUITS: A Good Coffee Table Book
Review: If you've ever wondered what Fruits fashion is all about, this is and isn't the book for you. Visually it's stunning and you'll find picture after picture of wild japanese street fashion. What you won't find, is any insight into the origins and evolution of this part of Japanese culture. If you'd like to SEE what all the hype is about, this book is for you. If you are looking for a book to read, this isn't the one.

Summary: The streets of Japan are very colorful...
Review: It must be incredible to walk down the streets of Japan and see such an incredible expression through clothes. What's great about the clothes the people wear is they do not appear to be pre-packaged "hip" clothes in total. True, I'm sure they're "hip" (some are probably expensive), but most of the outfits seem to be constructed from many different elements; a pastiche of derivatives that combines into something original and beautiful. You see glimpses of Sanrio, some obviously Western influences here and there, and countless gadgets, shoes, makeup, stuffed animals and items that completely defy description. I'm still not sure what to make of the 'Lolita' and 'Gothic Lolita' descriptions of some of the outfits, but overall an incredibly fun book to just sit and get lost in.

Summary: Is your wife into fashion, and obsessively creative??
Review: My wife is all the above mentioned...and we discovered FRUITS at the MOCA loobyshop in LA. I was first attracted to the "weird" people on the cover. I thumbed thru. My wife loved the comments associated with each CHARACTER in the photographs. We bought six copies and gave them to our closest friends as holiday gifts! Each friend was enchanted! FRUITS has been, for my wife, a rejuvination into creativity via the "street fashion" inside FRUITS. She is inspired by each CHARACTER she uncovers. FRUITS is a joy to read. An absoltute, non-stop, page turner to see WHAT and WHO comes next! We love it!
