Summary: Learn the basics of ballet without ever leaving home
Review: With this brilliantly imagined and beautifully achieved work, Gretchen Warren has created the first comprehensive, photographically illustrated reference and teaching guide on classical ballet technique. In more than 2,600 photographs, Johan Renvall, Cynthia Harvey, Susan Jaffe, and an array of other dancers from such companies as the American Ballet Theatre and the Joffery Ballet demonstrate in sequence every movement in the classical repertoire, from the most basic to the most advanced.

The book's design matches each photograph with captions that detail appropriate teaching techniques and describe the proper execution of each step. In her text, Warren combines the best aspects of the teaching of several international schools, including the Danish and Soviet syllabi. A glossary defines common dance terms, and a pronunciation guide provides phonetic transcriptions of French ballet terms. A chapter especially for teachers describes the preparation, structure, and content of a successful ballet class and offers a variety of methods classroom-tested by Warren, a teacher-training expert and former professional dancer with extensive credentials.

Especially designed to meet the diverse needs of American dancers today, "Classical Ballet Technique" is a professionally accurate and definitive reference source for students and teachers, the result of twenty years of study and research.

Gretchen Ward Warren studied at London's Royal Ballet and the National Ballet School of Washington, D.C. She was soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet for eleven years and ballet mistress of American Ballet Theatre II from 1978 to 1983. She is an associate professor of dance at the University of South Florida and frequently appears as a master teacher on the national and international circuits.

Summary: THE BEST BOOK EVER
Review: You will not regret purchasing this book! I studied ballet from ages 7-22 and got away from it when I went to law school. I recently began taking ballet classes again and was asked if I would teach one of the classes at the studio. This book is a wonderful guide to refresh your ballet terminology. Also, for those teachers who have not been in a regular ballet class for awhile, this book gives great ideas on different steps to teach and incorporate in combinations. Of course, it also helps with spelling! This book is an absolute must for students and teachers alike.
