Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very Very Helpful
Review: This book give lots of usefel advice. I would recommend it to anyone who is in theater.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Simply Wonderful!
Review: This book is a must have for anyone who auditions. It provides helpful suggestions that every actor, professional or amatuer, must know! Micheal Shurtleff address the issues of dress, attitude, persistance, and many others. No matter if you are auditioning for Broadway, Hollywood, or community theatre you must read this book!

Summary: Not just for actors, definately not for rotten actors.......
Review: This book is a wonderful slant on the creative process - I used it to teach my private voice students how to interpret songs for performance. It was recommended to me by one of my directors who is also a screenwriter. His words: "It's not just for actors, it's for directors, writers.... oh I think everyone should read it!" Having logged 25+ years in stage production I would agree: It's a shot of reality I could have used when I was just a snot-nosed kid starting out in the business (although I probably would have chafed at it at the time). I'll be passing on to my (successful) screenwriter friends - it's a wonderful tool for building characters both on the page and on the stage.

Summary: I've nearly worn my copy out with use!
Review: This book is an INVALUABLE resource. And I'm not a traditional actor, I'm an opera singer. I had to read this for a class on (what else?) auditioning, and loved it so much that I finished it the first day of class. Shurtleff's 12 Guideposts, carefully applied to just about any performance (I use them for arias, art songs, etc), can help create something nuanced and fascinating. As if the guideposts weren't enough, Shurtleff gives wonderful ideas on the nitty-gritty of auditions (how to present your past experience, what to wear, etc). I just can't say enough good about this book. When I perform an operatic scene that I've run through the 12 guideposts, I get comments like, "You're a great actress! You really have a theatrical flair!" Boy, does that feel good. I'd give this thing six stars if I could. I hate to even tell other people about this book, because then everyone can gain my edge.

Summary: kick ass book
Review: this book is one of the best i've read on the subject of acting. that's because it actually discusses acting and the auditioning process (not how to find an agent and further ones career)it focuses on the craft, not the career. also shurtloff includes interesting and sometimes comical antedotes from his career and the careers of other succesful people in show business(such as barbara streisand and deniro)in these stories he talks about mistakes he's made as well as strategies which worked effectively. there are also sections which show how to break down a scene and properly analyze whats going on. he does this buy showing conversations betweeen teachers and auditioners with actors. you should definatley by this book if you want to read something interesting that doesnt tell you the best way to find an apt in LA, good luck

Summary: right on the money!!!!
Review: This book will not only give you the insight and the know-how on how to get it together, but it's chock full of humorous anecdotes and phrases. The great thing is that not only can you use these techiniques towards acting, but they also work EXTREMELY well for job interviews and life as a general rule. It is more of a Real Life 101 and how to deal with directors (i.e bosses, teachers) It serves a multi-faceted purpose. Every actor/actress should own two copies (in case somebody steals one).

Summary: Great Book for Beginner Actors
Review: This is a beginner level book, though the writer would get a little angry with that comment. By "beginner" I mean those who haven't auditioned professionally a lot. If you haven't been on more auditions than you can count, you'll find you can learn a lot from this book. There's great descriptions of the casting process and what is expected of the actor, do's and don't's for the actor, and information on how to prepare for auditions.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The One and Only Book You'll Ever Need to Learn a Craft
Review: This is a fantastic book -- simple, powerful, effective. I studied with the author in person, in a series of classes one summer in Manhattan, and I have never *seen* such powerful work coming from actors -- in class or anywhere else. He's an amazing teacher, and absolutely none of it is diluted in this book. It will change the way you look at acting for the rest of your life. Craft puts power in the hands of the actor.

Michael Shurtleff started out as a casting director, and discovered some of the most revered names you know. He teaches you to be an *actor*, not just a reactor.

Summary: Must Have
Review: This is a great tool that every actor should have. Read it. Re -read it. An actor constantly has to do his homework and be pro-active. Another book that will really jump start your success, and help you to take control of your life is Twelve Step Plan To Becoming An Actor in LA. It will really help you to find your niche - get you working right away- and give you the tools necessary to take care of yourself emotionally. These two books should be your bible

Summary: Another must-have book for all actors
Review: This is an excellent book for actors. Simply put, it is on of the few book that is a must have. However, if you are serious about making acting a career like I am, then you must also get "Auditioning: An Actor-Friendly Guide." It is packed with information as to what we screw up on in auditions, whether it is our nerves, memory, stage fright,(which could be tied into nerves, depending on your point of view) or other problems we constantly face at that dreaded time. There are strategies inside this Bible for actors that helps us conquer the audition process. It is full of advice from auditors who have years of experience in the field. Their advice has made me learn so much that I am confident I will conquer my next audition. GET THIS BOOK!
