Summary: one of the worst books ever written
Review: I had to read this book for my honors Theatre class, and let me tell you it is the most boring book ever! Sure, the author had some good points, but he didn't need to drone on and on about them forever! Nearly no one in my class liked the book. We especially didn't enjoy his comment "Go beat your wife and kids". there are far better books out there. Do Not read this book! The only other books as bad as this one are "The Scarlet Letter" and "Walden"

Summary: Actors advice
Review: I highly recommend this book in our quest for the great parts as actors. I also recommend: Voice Lessons to Go by Vaccarino- a cheap way to get your singing lessons taken care of, because we've all had to sing at some audition, The Artsts Way by Cameron- a 12 week program to help you really focus and baby your creativity and abilities, Back Stage West- You've got to have it for audition info, and lots of great friends to support you through all the madness!

Summary: An Actor's Constant Companion
Review: If you can't attend an audition class, having this book is the next best thing. I have mine from the first time I took an acting class a decade ago and still refer to it. Auditions are the way of life for actors whether you are starting out or are already a star. Shurtleff's book has been around a long time, and there is a reason for it. It works.

Summary: Actors' Bible and Great Tool for Writers
Review: If you want to be a WORKING actor in Hollywood, the read this book - several times, and continue re-reading it every year or so to your skills honed, to remind you of what got you where you are.

Outside of a masterclass with a Sanford Meisner-type or a Ute Hagen, this well-written, well-crafted book will teach you a tremendous amount in regards to make a character yours with little or no time to prepare. It will give you the skills to leave a lasting impression on casting directors everywhere.

Shurtleff's technique extends to once you have the role as well, preparation required to get the role will also assist you in making the role memorable.

It's also extremely helpful for screenwriters and playwrights, because it should give you insight on how to craft scenes for maximum impact by understanding how actors mine scenes for character, passion and emotion.

Summary: Shurtleff's book is great... so great I became a director
Review: Michael Shurtleff is one of few, in the vast ocean of resources available out there, that really knows his stuff. Don't waste your time with other books. So great an affect his book had on me, I quit the profession of acting and become a director. Someday I'll resurface as an actor but in my own films and in my own way. Cheers

Summary: I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E!!!
Review: My acting teacher is actually using this book as our textbook (undergrad intermediate theatre class)! It isn't only guidelines for auditioning, it is a guideline for acting. The book explains how to look at a character in a way that I have never thought. My acting has improved incredibly because of this book.

Summary: No drama person should be without this.
Review: People say that this is a book that no actor should be without. I disagree- this is a book that no person involved in drama at all should be without. Drama teacher, actor, writer, director- everybody needs this. It's been said that shortly after this book was first published, a lot of not-so-good actors were getting cast- simply because their auditions were going so well. If you're ever going to be involved in an audition- or just want to learn about it- then you must read this.

Summary: Must read
Review: Quick read and more helpful than most of the garbage you will find on acting.

Summary: Just an excellent book
Review: The main thing and just the best in this book are the 12 Guideposts. They will help the actor enormous, to work on the figure, to make the role authentic and interesting. The practical applications, when he writes about different scenes makes it interesting to read thru the 12 principles. You will notice: there is writing an absolute Profi! You will profit not only for auditions, but for every drama, you will play!

Summary: The best audition guide
Review: This book contains everything one needs to know to sucessfully audition. As a young acting student, I am only beginning to use the resources provided within the text, but it will be of great benefit to any actor wanting to better himself. The stories and tips are amazing, fun to read and insightful. I only wish I had begun to use this book sooner.
