Rating: Summary: If you're into acting, you must own this book!!! Review: "Audition" is by far the best organized, and understandable acting book I've ever read. Not only can Mr. Shurtleff's guidelines be applied to auditioning, they are the fundamental building blocks for ALL character development. Mr. Shurtleff breaks auditioning down into 12 realistic, easy to achieve "guideposts". If you are a seasoned performer, or even mildly considering community theatre- Read "Audition"! They say 99% of professional acting careers is rejection- why not learn how to give your audition 110%?
Rating: Summary: Indispensible Review: A book that anyone interested in acting MUST read, whether they're working on audition skills or not. Simple common-sense tools for understanding and executing a scene in audition, rehearsal, and performance.
Rating: Summary: One of the Top Ten Audition Books Review: Acting and getting work as an actor are two completetly different things. You want to learn how to audition? Start with this book.
Rating: Summary: The truth, and nothing but the absolutely brutal truth. Review: An eye-opening resource for actors. Auditioning requires a distinct set of skills and Shurtleff lays them out in bold print. His "12 Guideposts" provide a frame on which to build an effective and successful audition. Written by a life-long theatre professional, this no-nonsense how-to book, gives solid advice to every actor - no matter how experienced. Each chapter is filled with lessons taken from workshops, auditions, and life. My personal favorite was, "Observations from a Life in the Theatre". An absolute must have!
Rating: Summary: Not just for actors Review: Auditioning is one of the scariest things we will ever choose to do and this book allows the actor to better understand the positions of the few people auditioning / interviewing us. Mr. Shurtleff lets us into the professional lives of these people, showing us that they're not big, frightening ogres trying to crush us in one blow, just people trying not to screw-up themselves. My copy of this book is in terrible condition from being read and reread over and over again - I love this book!
Rating: Summary: Dead On Review: Even if you have no interest in the entertainment industry at all, the book is worth reading. I have gotten better insight about personal relationships in this book than in any book devoted to the purpose. Just two points: Shyness is wanting to be bold, and one of the biggest reasons to have friends is to have someone to compete with.
Rating: Summary: Jam-packed with useful insights, advice and anecdotes! Review: For me, this book completely eliminated all the mysteries surrounding auditions, but the book also serves as an important guide for actors to interpret scripts and bring new and complex things into their performances. We also get to read some really entertaining and informative stories about how such stars as Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Ben Vereen, and Robert DeNiro got their starts. Definitely the sort of book to be re-read many times! I would also say that it is an outstanding book to use in class or independent study, for ANYONE involved with drama or film!
Rating: Summary: This is a wonderful tool for EVERY actor! Review: I am a tech but due to class requirements, I have to act as well. I read it when I first got it (several years ago) and I'm reading it again and discovering things I had missed before. Even if you are not becoming an actor or really studying acting, it gives perspective on not only acting but human behavior as well. It's wonderful reading no matter how many times you read it!
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ABOUT AUDITIONING! Review: I got this book on a loan from my voice instructor when I went out for an audition of Tartuffe. I didn't make it, but I started reading the book, and it has helped me a lot! I got my next audition thanks to the tips, and guideposts. And even though I've read it completely through, I keep reading it over and over again. It has become my theater bible. I suggest anyone who has any desire to act read it. Even if you have no trouble with auditions, because it'll only help you improve.
Rating: Summary: It works. It creates actors. It simply works. Review: I had no acting experience. None. Not even in school plays.I got into acting on a lark, as a hobby. I had been studying and auditioning for about three years with no success, and very little progress. An instructor recommended this book. I read it, and then read it again. All of a sudden, things that had been drilled in my head during acting classes finally started to make sense. Within the following 6 months, my skills grew in a series of leaps, and I began booking at auditions. Not a lot, not yet. But the sudden increase in my abilities was astounding. I am still not a great actor. But this book helped me get out of the "student" mode and into the "working" mode. Well worth it.
