Rating: Summary: The Zondervan Family Cookbook --- by Pat Grundy Review: Being a cookbook author, I approach cookbooks with a more critical eye than others do. As I opened this large tome, I was pleasantly surprised. My first thought was: "What an attractive layout!" The graphics are beautiful, warm and homey, as well as, useful with little icons identifying the type of recipe. The sidebars are a good read of inspiring personal stories from people who found a way to have family life even in today's fast paced society. The recipes are really varied from well-known traditional favorites to the unusual. The common denominator is that all the recipes are oriented towards a family meal, often involving the children in the preparation. Like Pat Grundy, I too believe that family ties are built and strengthened when a family cooks together and dines together. Although I have a pile of "must try" recipes and a bunch of original recipe ideas waiting to be developed languishing on my desk, I just had to flag a bunch of recipes in this book, to try when I get chance. The Zondervan Family Cookbook is definitely a keeper.
Rating: Summary: great reading--great receipes Review: I love this cookbook! It's entertaining to just sit and read the family stories and traditions that go along with the receipes. And the receipes are not only practical, the ones I have tried are also really good---and not complicated. I like that. This cookbook is worth 5 stars and then some!!!
Rating: Summary: Real Family Cooking Review: I received this cookbook a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed reading it, and picking out recipes to try. the recipes look easy, the ingredients i either have or are readily accessible, real life recipes, for real life people. i especially liked the side comments. it's as if a family member is standing in your kitchen reminiscing with you. the recipes are well laid out, easy to read, the line drawings are charming. my own personal prejudice:i prefer books like this to be spiral bound so they lie flat as i'm following a recipe. but since each recipe is complete on one page, it's easy enough to use a bookholder. somehow this is the type of cookbook that you know will be used often, passed on in the family and will probably be splattered with bits of ingredients. :-) i would have also enjoyed seeing pictures of the finished product, but these 2 comments are only minor faults if even that. it's a book to read, cook from, and share.
Rating: Summary: *Family* cookbook is right! Review: I've got to tell you, I'm very pleased with my newest cookbook. This is a very comfortable cookbook to both read and cook with. Mine showed up shortly before Easter, and I let it loose on the leftover ham with wonderful results! The anecdotes make interesting reading but they don't get in the way of the recipes, and the recipes are well laid-out and easy to follow. It might not win any awards for gourmet cooking, but it is a success at feeding my family. I can't wait to dig into some of the international recipes!
Rating: Summary: This is my kind of book Review: I've had this book for a few months now and been very pleased with all of the recipes I've tried. My 16 year old daughter is still a beginning cook and has had only successes whenever she's used this cookbook. That's the best endorsement I can think of!My first love is community/church type cookbooks and this one fits right in. It's fun to find names of people I've heard of before attached to a recipe. Sometimes that's enough to encourage me to try the recipe. Even my daughter gives this cookbook 2 thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: The Zondervan Family Cookbook Review: I've had this cookbook for several years and love it. Even though I have over 100 cookbooks, this is one of my favorites and I use it often. The recipes are practical, easy to understand and delicious, some have become family favorites. Unique and delicious recipes such as Indonesian Stir Fry are sprinkled throughout the cookbook with classics like Johnny Cash's "Old Iron Pot" Family Style Chili and a variety of selection to please everyone from vegetarians to seafood lovers. My kids love the Chocolate Sheet Cake recipe. Obviously, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: My favorite combination Review: Pat Gundry has compiled a book with my favorite combination of features: recipes that real families prepare and enjoy regularly and warm family anecdotes. I've tried several of the recipes from Ms. Gundry's book and each one has been a keeper. I love reading about how families honor their heritage by handing down recipes as well as how they develop new family traditions with food. A good read, and a reliable source of new ethnic and down-home American favorites for your family.
Rating: Summary: good, practical, fun Review: Pat Gundry hit the nail on the head when she used the word 'family' in the title. This cookbook not only has a wide range of receipes for everyone, it provides an entertaining look into different family traditions and stories connected with the people who submitted the receipes. I would enjoy reading this cookbook even if I never ventured near the kitchen.
Rating: Summary: Fun, Easy, and Quick Review: This is my most often used cookbook in my collection. Its layout is great for my family as I teach my younger children to bake. It provides dialog for setting our own family traditions with baking. The recipes are noted for skill and time too. Quick & Easy is my favorite. It reminds me of good ole grandma's cooking and I love the opportunity to pass that down to my children! If you don't purchase this cookbook your missing out.
Rating: Summary: Hey, I have that ingredient Review: Too many cookbooks by famous chefs do not contain the type of recipe we want to make on a regular basis. Quail eggs poached in yak milk is just not going to be ready for dinner tonight. The Zondervan Family Cookbook is loaded with good recipes made with ingredients that most of us have in the cupboard right now. The collection of good eats in this book include simple to prepare to elegant dishes for meals when you have special guests. They have been tried and proven. The book is a good read also. Plenty of sidebars with stories of how a recipe came about or what makes the dish special for the contributor. I like to see that in a cookbook as it gives it a lot more personality than just a collection of ingredient lists. If you are just starting to cook or if you hae many years of experience, there will be a few "keepers" in here for you. Hmmm, I think we'll be having Popover Chicken tonight. Hey, I have all the indredients for it already!
