Rating: Summary: A major contribution to culinary history. Delicious too! Review: Arthur has made a magnificent contribution to arts and letters with this painstakingly researched book. It is a true sociological, historical, anthropological and culinary tribute to the history of food and the history of New York. I can't wait to cook out of this book and my 85-year-old parents are enjoying every word of this book as they walk down memory lane. Arthur, your personal style and meticulously tested recipes will enrich my life for years to come. A most heartfelt thank you and congratulations.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I am married to a native New Yorker and we spent an entire weekend looking over this book and talking about many of the wonderful places it mentions, many of which we still visit today. As an extra bonus for avid cooks, there are recipes. For anyone who remembers Luchows or any of the other venerable, now closed restaurants the book mentions, it will take you back to happy times and good memories. It's an excellent book and clearly Schwartz has poured a great deal of research into what is his labor of love.
Rating: Summary: If You Like Food and New York, This Is The Book For You Review: I ordered this book with Amazon.com's free super saver shipping and it arrived in just four days. It is filled with stories, great photos, and wonderful recipes. Arthur Schwartz covers famous restaurants (many are long gone) and all of New York's ethnic groups. Some of my personal favorites in this book are stories and pictures about New York's street vendors and the home delivery bakers such as Entenmanns, Drake's Cake and Dugan's. But don't think that this is only a history book. Arthur takes real New York foods and gives us recipes that can be made at home. You could actually enjoy authentic New York City food anywhere in the USA! I am ordering 5 more of these books to give as holiday gifts this year!
Rating: Summary: This book is phenomenal! Review: It is the perfect gift for any New Yorker, former New Yorker, or wannabe NYer. I bought one for myself, showed it to my dad, and now I have to order another one for myself. I just love it - the photos and text are wonderful, and the recipes are an added treat. Arthur put so much work into this book, and I can honestly say it is a masterpiece! I am planning on bringing a copy to one of his appearances to get autographed.
