Rating: Summary: a complete guide to edible wild plants of the Southwest Review: A TASTE OF NATURE: Edible Plants of the Southwest and How to Prepare Themby Kahana FarnsworthNettle Lasagna, Creamed Tumbleweed, Cattail Biscuits, Lamb's Quarters Parmesan, Prickly Sow Thistle Stir Fry! These are just a few of the delicious and unusual recipes in A TASTE OF NATURE. Although there are many books that explain how to locate and identify wild, edible plants, few describe what to do with them after they are harvested. A TASTE OF NATURE is not only a complete guide to range, habitat, nutritional and medicinal facts, and identification of common wild plants, it also has useful information about how to prepare them. This book contains seventy-five delicious recipes that are designed to be healthful, nutritious, and easy to prepare. Included is a detailed drawing of each plant for easy identification. A sixteen-page color section illustrates every plant in the book. There is also is a section on poisonous plants to prevent misidentification. The main geographic area covered by A TASTE OF NATURE is the American Southwest, extending from southern California, Nevada, and Utah through Arizona and New Mexico to West Texas.Kahanah Farnsworth is a teacher and an outdoor educator who has worked as a volunteer for the San Diego History Museum leading nature hikes. Being an avid cook, she loves to experiment with natural ingredients. Her interests include hiking, camping, and painting. She resides in southern California near San Diego."Some people call them weeds. Kahanah Farnsworth, author of A TASTE OF NATURE, calls them dinner. And breakfast. And everything in between from soup and salad to stir fry and quiche. . . The book helps readers identify plants that are good to eat and plants that should be avoided." Rating: Summary: This unusual book is entertaining and informative. Review: Ever dream of living off the land? A Taste of Nature is a guide to edible plants. This book tells you how to identify edible plants, and gives you a recipe for each plant. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated and reader-friendly.
Rating: Summary: A detailed and informative book. Review: I like the book and am glad to have it. The information is thorough. We had it with us when we went on an outing, and it made the stay even more pleasurable. I wish the drawings were detailed and colored rather than just outlines of the plants. The color plates are too dark. Aside those two things, the book is worth having.
Rating: Summary: There is more then survival in the desert. Review: This is a wonderful concise book on edible and nonedible plants of the desert. She includes the Latin name for each plant making it easy to find out more about any one plant. Has good color plates, although I would have liked larger pictures of some of the plants.I am very glad I purchased it and I think anyone who likes seeing more in a plant then something to step on or over will enjoy it.I know I do.
