Rating: Summary: The best cookbook in my collection! Review: A friend gave me my copy of this book after my first visit to the restaurant in Philadelphia. I was smitten by the carrot cake and the heart
tarts! Amidst the pages I have found wonderful dishes that are a hit at every dinner party. I have given away at least a dozen copies to
all my cooking friends. There is a terrific pair of
pages with suggestions for pasta toppings -
perfect after a long day at work. This cookbook is truly a work of art!
Rating: Summary: The Frog Commissary Cookbook Review: A real classic of a cookbook. I have used this book so much that I have worn out the pages. The stuffed pistachio chicken breasts with the herb-garlic cheese filling is great, but I have used just the cheese filling for parties. I just roll it in chopped nuts and it is delicious.
Rating: Summary: Eat, Drink, and Learn Review: Consistently excellent recipes in a style that encourages exploration of variations will help all who read this become more skilled chefs. The sidebar hints and drawings add to the readability and usefullness of this book
Rating: Summary: Best chocolate chip cookie recipe, ever Review: I bought this book purely because of its recipe for Oatmeal Walnut Chocolate Chip cookies. It's a smash hit every time I bake them - even my mom, who's not much of a cookie person, and my cousins who are all trying to stick to their weight-watchers diets, falter when I bake these cookies. Around Christmastime, they are gone in a flash. Absolutely delicious.
The cookbook itself also has tons of great ideas, some really nice recipes. In my experience, it's good to modify some of the recipes to use more current cooking methods. For example, the book's authors are not too big on olive oil, which is a staple in most cooking today.
Rating: Summary: Universal Appeal Review: I came across the Frog Commissary more than 10 years ago and both my wife and I have made many of the receipes. This is a special book that one would want to share with good friends. There is a lot of helpful information, imparted in a straight, factual way. There is absolutely no pretense here - only wonderful receipes that one will want to make over and over again. I wish that this was the first of a series; it is that good.
Rating: Summary: The best cookbook!!!! Review: I have spent time working as a chef all over the world and this is my favorite cookbook of all time! The recipes are precise and easy to follow, yet still extremely creative. So far I haven't made anything from here that hasn't been fantastic. I always end up giving this as a present and I am very sad to hear it is going out of print. I'll have to try to buy as many as I can, because my copy is starting to fall apart. The last recipe I made was the Grand Marnier Chocolate Mousse Cake, and it was great!!!! However, we all were getting drunk from eating it!
Rating: Summary: A Must Have Cookbook Review: I love cookbooks, and this is one of my favorites. It is worth buying for the Carrot Cake recipe, alone!
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book Review: I love this book and have been using it since it was published in 1985. The Frog and Commissary were my favorite restaurants when I used to live in Philly. Some of my favorites from the book are the Chicken with Brandied Mustard Sauce, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, Linzer Torte, Chicken Liver Pate, Salade Nicoise, Apple Sour Cream Streusal Pie ( I make it with cranberries in the winter and blueberries in the summer) and the Coffee Walnut chocolate chip muffins. This is a great book - it will make you a star cook!!!
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book Review: I love this cookbook. I have been through three copies and given numerous copies to friends and family. This book was out-of-print for years and I am very happy to see it reissued -- so I can give a copy to my son away in college! This is where the French-Thai connection started as far as I can tell. The book is a marvel. The illustrations and comments in the margins are as valuable as the recipes and their text. I have made just about every dish in this book and I have never been disappointed and neither have my guests. My son grew up on the Thai Popcorn; I believe that the duck and chicken recipes are beyond reproach; the lentil salad is to die for (better have a heck of an extensive spice collection for that one....) and EVERYBODY loves the Carrot Cake. A fine, fine example of American creativity in the culinary arts.
