Summary: my favorite recipe, but no others
Review: My favorite meal is this book's Sweet Potato Soup with cornbread. But I have used it for little else. As with many older cookbooks, vegetarian or not, most recipes depend on eggs and cheese. If you're looking for actual *veggies*, try _The New Vegetarian Epicure_.

Summary: My fond introduction to veggie cuisine
Review: My mom bought this book the year I was born (1978). It's now dog-eared, splotched, and bent out of shape. This is the book that taught us both to make the best bread when I was little (still a comfort activity and food), as well as the book that taught me that eggplant is not scary. I'm not giving it five stars only because some of the recipes are rather unhealthy, with a lot of butter, high-fat dairy, and MSG. Of course those are the ones that taste the best.

Summary: There are better vegetarian books than this classic
Review: This book is very typical of Seventies vegetarian cooking, which was experimental and not always well-flavored. I remember plenty of horrid meals at local veggie restaurants, much like many of the recipes in this book.

The soups and breads tend to be good, but the main dishes can be just awful. I recommend some newer books (Moosewood, for one) instead of this nostalgic, but not so tasty, classic.

Summary: The Vegetarian Epicure - Still the best!
Review: This cookbook has excellent recipes and instructions - you can't go wrong. I am buying a replacement copy because I lent mine to a friend and can't get it back!

The lasagne recipe is out of this world. There is a recipe for spinach salad that is so good no one will know what it is. And a recipe for green bean salad is so tasty and refreshing!

I'm not a vegetarian and I can't live without it!

Summary: A Delight "The Vegetarian Epicure"

Summary: Even for non-vegetarians!
Review: This is a favorite book and has been for years! The Cauliflower Curry and Cucumber Raita get rave reviews from all who try them - and make a fabulous meal alone or as a co-entree with meats. I have continued to collect Anna Thomas' books since my introduction to this one. Her approach is simple; ingredients and tools required are commonly found in almost anyone's kitchen. If what you seek is a way to make non-meats more exotic than you've had in the past - this is the book. I wouldn't be without it.

Summary: A Vegetarian Celebration
Review: This was my first cookbook when i became a vegetarian 25 years ago and it is still one of the best around today. A true classic.
Try the stuffed peppers and the dolmades (stuffed grapevine leaves.) There's a section on curries and of course sweets. My favorites I always make are Spicy sweet potato pie, torta di ricotta, summer fruit tart, and apple crisp. She gives lots of menu ideas and her recipes are easy.

Summary: A Vegetarian Celebration
Review: This was my first cookbook when i became a vegetarian 25 years ago and it is still one of the best around. I must have 50 or more good veggie cookbooks but I've found that I keep returning to my roots (this book) for most of my cooking. After all I learned to cook with this book. Her bread recipes are amazing. My husband still bakes her french bread recipe on a regular basis. It is so simple. The whole wheat bread is a good one and if your in a hurry (who isn't?) and you want a simple bread to serve warm with dinner try her Herb and Onion bread. A really fast yeast bread. The corn bread recipe from this book I still get cheers every time I make it.

The soup chapter is my favorite. Soup and bread is my favorite meal of all times. Her potato soup is to die for. It's actually the first time I ever used dill weed in a potao recipe. It was so good that I use dill weed in all my potato dishes now and I have to buy it by the case. Good stuff. The corn and cheddar cheese chowder is also a soup I still make on a continuing bases. Lentil-tomato soup. Mmmmmm so hearty and nutritious. Onion soup, chestnut soup, asparagus soup, creamed tomato soup with cognac (inspired me to plant tomatoes.)

Also a chapter on sauces, salads, dressings, vegetables, omlets and souffles, cheese, rice and grains. Try the stuffed peppers and the dolmades (stuffed grapevine leaves.) There's a section on curries and of course sweets. My favorites I always make are her Spicy sweet potato pie, torta di ricotta, summer fruit tart, and apple crisp. She gives lots of menu ideas and her recipes are easy. This is the book that started my amazing career as a vegetarian chef. I want to encourage everyone, vegetarian or not to try this book. It's a winner!
