Summary: another use for this book ...
Review: ... is if you observe kashrut (the Jewish dietary laws) and want some good recipes, both main and side dishes, that won't violate the prohibitions. Many, many times i've resorted to this book to find something meatless to go along with the rest of the menu, and i've even found many Passover-friendly dishes in there also. In fact, i've found it more useful than all but one of my Jewish cookbooks. i got my first copy about 20 years ago as a gift, and have just ordered another as i loaned it out and can't remember to whom.

Some of the recipes are beyond my interest or skill, but there is enough variety here to suit just about anyone. Along with my Joan Nathan book (who can keep a Jewish kitchen without Joan Nathan?) and my Joy of Cooking, this is my most-used recipe book. i don't cook that much any more, but when i do this is where i turn first for meatless meals.

Summary: A classic in vegetarian cooking
Review: I bought this cookbook over 20 years ago, and I still cook from my tattered copy. Many of the recipes are heavy with fat, eggs and/or cheese, but I still love them. The first Indian food that I ever ate, was a recipe from this book -- Anna Thomas opened my eyes to spices and cuisines that I'd never imagined. Today, you can get most (if not all) of the ingredients in any large supermarket.
I recommend this cookbook as a classic for vegetarians. My carnivorous husband also has enjoyed everything I've ever cooked from it.

Summary: Bland
Review: I hate to seem like a spoil sport but though the bread recipes in this book are good (I particularly like the scones and the challah) and every now and then I make a batch of the sharp vinagrette, most of the main dishes are just not worth the time preparation involved. Part of the problem is that the spicing is off. These foods are just too plain and bland. The Potato Peel Broth is as just bad as it sounds. And the commentary in this book is so poorly written that it sticks in my brain like a bad jingle from a commercial. "Saladly crisp and gardenly various is the garden salad." Come on!

I've had this book for 10 years and am weirdly attached to it; if you want a plain solid meal that you spend all day cooking, this is it. The food here is ribsticking but time intensive. Me, I don't see pouring all this effort into what is basically mediocre food but sometimes these dishes are comforting to make for a dinner at home if you've got all day to cook.

Summary: I have loved this book since I was in my twenties...
Review: I have loved this book since I was in my twenties---it was one of my first cookbooks--acquired when I was a graduate student at the Univ. of Texas. I lost my first copy somewhere--and bought another copy a few years ago. My favorite recipes? Asparagus Pastry and Eggplant Parmesan. Are the recipes bland as some have criticized? No---just not overdone. I love them.

Summary: I always return to this book!!
Review: I have used this book for more than 20 years and decided to order a replacement so I'm ready when this copy totally falls apart. Don't let the title scare you - it's a great book for vegetarians, episodic vegetarians (like me), or someone looking for great dishes to accompany their roast beef. I invariably turn to this book for something different when I am entertaining. There are recipes for soup, breads, vegetables, and desserts and they are wonderful. I've never formed the same attachment to Book 2 but you won't regret the purchase of the original. My only regret is that there isn't hardcover version.

Summary: Somewhat complicated but delicious!
Review: I have used this book so much that now it consists of a pile of loose pages! Some of the recipes can be rather time consuming, but short cuts can be taken and they still come out wonderful (use the ravioli filling to stuff ready made shells; use canned crushed tomatoes in the creamy tomato sauce instead of crushing your own). Many of these recipes have become staples in my kitchen.
