Rating: Summary: Good to excellent slow cooker recipes Review: I really like this book -- I've recommended it to friends and family. One small caveat: Rodgers assumes you will add or adjust seasonings to taste. If you want it all spelled out for you then you might not want this book. I made the port glazed carrots recently and decided that the seasonings were just a little bland for my tastes and added some ground ginger. Having said all of that, nearly every recipe I have made from this book has been good to excellent. His Potatoes Euphoria is a keeper for sure.As to the ongoing controversy in these amazon[.com] reviews over time versus flavor, I personally like to see the beef or chicken browned first. It adds to both the flavor and appearance and it really doesn't take that long. If you want to throw everything in a crock pot and hope for the best, then buy an older book with can of creamed whatever soup in every recipe instead of this book.
Rating: Summary: This books makes owning a slow cooker worthwhile! Review: I received a slow cooker as a wedding gift three years ago, and considered giving it away since I had nothing but negative associations that stemmed largely from memories of 1970s childhood "crockpot" meals--all of which invariably included the likes of cream-of-whatever soup, processed cheese products, and canned vegetables. However, I decided to give the newly acquired apparatus a try and went to Amazon.com to search for a cookbook designed especially for this type of cooking. Based on the reviews on the website, I purchased Rick Rodgers's book because it seemed to be the one most geared toward people who actually enjoy cooking, appreciate good food, and, most importantly, who did not want to consume the often unhealthy ingredients called for by most slow cooker recipes. All of that said, this is one of my most consistently used cookbooks--and I own at least thirty. I usually prefer to cook Asian food, particularly Indian and Thai, but when I want to cook more "classic" recipes, such as roasts and stews, I always find myself returning to Rodgers's book. His recipes call for lots of fresh, easily obtainable ingredients and the prep work is minimal considering the quality of the final product. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone one who is looking to use a slow cooker but who has been put off by the "dump and stew" methods typically offered by other books.
Rating: Summary: Crockery Cookbook Review: I returned this book I was so disappointed with it. It is not the prep times before or after preparing a dish, that is to be expected with anything you cook unless you pull a frozen dinner out of a package. It was the overly done up recipes, sounding too much like fine gourmet cooking. I want down home, tasty, simpler recipes, meaning ingredients I normally have on hand and ones my whole family will eat without begging. I have other crockpot cookbooks I much prefer like the America's Best Slow Cooker recipes and Pillsbury's One Dish cookbook, these being my favorites of all crockery cooking books.
Rating: Summary: The definitive slow cooker cookbook? Review: I'm no cookbook groupie, but having had Rick Rodger's "Ready & Waiting" for over six months now, I feel oddly compelled to write in to say how much I'm enjoying it. When I purchased my Rival Crockpot from Target less than a year ago, I wondered if I'd actually use it. With several books on the subject, I find myself pulling out Rodgers' cookbook often. The red beans and rice recipe is worth the cost of the book alone -- a good rice and dab of creme fraiche and you're a star. From the goulash to the pot roasts to the chicken recipes, I've been really pleased with the flavors, textures and taste of everything I've made. I don't agree with other reviewers who say prep takes a lot of time. True, these are not "dump ingredients and run" recipes, but the time to prepare is pretty modest relative to the outcome. This cookbook's definitely worth a try.
Rating: Summary: Best Slow Cooker Book Available! Review: I've cooked at least 15 recipes from this cookbook, and they have all been great. At least 5 of them have been very exceptional, way beyond my expectations for a crockpot recipe. I have many crockpot cookbooks that have given mediocre results, but this one is by far the best giving me tremendous dishes to serve my family.
There is a real variety of recipes in here, including many versions of chili. My favorite recipe is the Moroccan Chicken and Vegetable Stew with Cous Cous. Delicious!! Tastes like what I paid $18 a plate for in a famous restaurant in Carmel, California.
Some of the recipes do require you to brown ingredients before placing them in the cooker, but that takes minimal time, about 10-15 minutes. From there, the cooker does the rest.
This cookbook is perfect for the busy Mom, who wants gourmet home cooked meals with only a fraction of the work required for traditional methods.
Worth every penny!
Rating: Summary: Just the best Review: I've had this cookbook for maybe two years. I have the 4 variously top rated slow cooker books on Amazon, plus the Weight Watchers slow cookbook, and of the 5, this is the best, and the others are good. I only wish the cover was as sophisticated as the recipes. If you were to ask me for only one slow cooker book, it would be this one.
Rating: Summary: Excellent recipes for convenient cooking Review: I've had this cookbook for almost a year now, and have tried 12 of the recipes, 3 of which I have made several times. We love the Chicken Tomato and Tortilla Soup, Beef Stroganoff, Herbed Tomato Sauce with Parmesan Meatballs, and Autumntime Applesauce. Delicious! I have been pleased with all of the recipes I've tried (except for the cabbage rolls, but I think maybe I did something wrong there!) I highly recommend this book. I do think it's a book for those who enjoy cooking. There is a little prep work involved, but not excessive by any means. I think it's perfect for stay-at-home moms who want to adjust their cooking schedule to a time other than the crazy afternoons.
Rating: Summary: Great for a working mom Review: I've owned this cookbook for years, and it's one of few that I use on a regular basis. I've come up with a few tricks for making the prep work easier, like browning onions and veggies right in the crockery insert. The spaghetti and meatballs recipe is our all-time favorite pasta dish.
Rating: Summary: very time consuming set up. Review: If I wanted to be that complex I would forget the slow cooker, and just cook the traditional way. This book is a disappointment. Most of the recipes sound great, but my schedule doesn't really permit me to spend two hours prepping then have everything the crock pot with 8 hours slow cooking time then another 30 minutes of hands on prep before dinner. This book needs another title. It's title is deceiving. These are not meals that cook themselves.
Rating: Summary: Can't believe it!! Review: My freind recomended this book and so I got it. WOW! What a change from the norm. The flavors were wonderful, everything was seasoned just perfectly! I like doing more than just throwing everything all together and letting it go. That usually makes everything taste the same but not true with these recipies! The wide range of flavors and variety is amazing! Buy this book!!!! You won't be disapointed and you WILL be recomending it to your freinds and loved ones!
