Rating: Summary: Church Basement Eatin'! Review: I LOVE this book....Right now I have a meatloaf and a peach cobbler in the oven the same day my book arrived. After years of eating my own unimaginative cooking ,this book is a godsend, for it tells how to prepare the very dishes my mom and grandmother used to cook.(Not to mention the Baptist Ladies!) The title is just a gimmick...Inside this cookbook is a treasury of soul-satisfying Sothern/Midwestern country cooking that you may remember from your childhood. This cookbook is the ideal gift for newlyweds, college students, single friends, heck ,anybody who like to eat! Hmmmmm...Tomorrow I think I'll make the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Yum!
Rating: Summary: Writin' and eatin'...Mickler's a pro Review: If you like community cookbooks, you'll love the White Trash Cookbooks. These are not only collections of yummies but also loving tributes to generations of cooks who worked with what they had. Don't bother with these books if "Cheez Whiz" makes you wince. Keep an open mind and an open heart and you'll be richly rewarded.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding reading, wonderful recipies Review: Lots of good fast recipies. Tasty and easy to make. Not for the measure by measure cook. I have several favorites that keep making back to the company picnics... Some recipies not for the weak of heart.:)
Rating: Summary: Wonderful backwoods recipes. Review: Mickler grew up in the backwoods of north Florida in Palm Valley between St. Augustine and Jacksonville. His recipes reflect the homestyle cooking of that area and other areas of the South. The recipes frequently use canned fruits and vegetables, Crisco and other nonpolitical ingredients. They are familiar and nostalgic to anyone who grew up in the rural South, easy to prepare, and good. The photos of Southern country are also familiar and nostalgic. A great book to read, look through, and use.
Rating: Summary: Real simple, real good, down-home food. Review: Mickler's self-deprecating portrayal of Southern prole culture is absolutely hilarious! But, even 'though this book is laugh-out-loud funny, it is no mere joke-book. Make no mistake -- these are real recipes that work. I took this cookbook with me when my family was relocated, for my husband's job, to live in Silicon Valley for three months in a corporate apartment and forced to make do with a bare-bones kitchen containing three foil-thin skillets and a rectangular Pyrex baking pan. Amazingly, these recipes were simple enough that I was able to make easy and delicious meals everyday with a minimum of implements and without need for fancy ingredients. This is, simply put, real folks' home-cooking. By the way, you have got to try Irma Lee Stratton's Chocolate Dump Cake! It is the chocolate cake recipe I had been searching for, the moistest and fudgiest chocolate cake I have ever had. You won't even want to add frosting, it's that good!
Rating: Summary: I do believe that young woman on the cover is a cousin! Review: My dad always said my mother was a peasant at heart when it came to eating. I am proud to say that I follow her footsteps right to the head of the line at any church social, bar mitzvah, picnics at state parks or cemetaries...wherever homecooking can be had...I will be there. Filled with the recipes we knew as children or have seen other folks eat at rest stops across the country; author, Ernst Matthew Mickler so eloquently sums up this type of cooking by saying, it'll make you lay down on the floor and scream. This book is a national treasure and should be in the kitchen of every American household. Sit back with a cold ice tea and enjoy each and every page. It doesn't get betta dan dis!
Rating: Summary: Real simple, real good, down-home food. Review: This book is great for anyone with a warm place in their heart for the south. My parents are from the south, but I was raised in California. My cousin bought this for me as a lark, probably after too many scrunch-faced "what's that?" from me when she cooked. The book is a hoot, the pictures of "white trash" kitchens and refrigerators, and life in general, the recipes, all remind me of the south, which I love. White bread and tubs of mayonaise rule these recipes. (that's my mom) Someday I will brave the smashed potato chip and mayo sandwich. Already love the kitchen sink tomato sandwich. (my cousin introduced those to me, and my scrunch-faced "huh?".) Now they are my late summer standard fare.

Rating: Summary: Yee HAW Review: This book is hysterical, tasteless and wonderful. To start off with, the recipes are authentic and they are tasty. Don't even think about looking for anything low cal here. The pictures are priceless, the short stories will keep you in stitches and the recipes will have everyone saying you are a wonderful cook. GET IT GET IT GET IT. If you are a fan of cookbooks you should not be without this one.
Rating: Summary: Lip-smackin' good cookin'...... Review: This book is priceless. If you are a serious cookbook enthusiast, or just a casual collector, you cannot be without this book. The recipes are all down-home cooking, and some are quite good. There are sandwiches and salads in here that I never imagined! The book is very entertaining, and as stated previously, it is an authentic cookbook. The pictures are also great, and fit perfectly with the recipes. I recommend this book to any cook with a good sense of humor! Enjoy! Kathleen
