Summary: Not for a new vegan convert...
Review: I was so excited about this book; I'd heard so much about it. I was looking forward to some new veg recipe ideas. Not only could I not find a *single recipe* that sounded even remotely appetizing, I was put off by the author's extensive suggestions to talk to your vegetables before you eat them. A little odd I felt. It may be because this book was originally written in the 70's, but with so many delicious veggies out there, I was surprised that most of the recipes called for simple combos such as beets and rutabaga. There was hardly a mention of some of our delicious exotic and far tastier veggies.

A true vegan may enjoy this, but someone who is new to a vegan lifestyle would probably prefer that their meals taste good.

Summary: Wonderful results, friends invariably ask for the recipes!
Review: I've cooked from the revised version of the cookbook for 5 or 6 years now, and her prep times are realistic so you can plan and cook for company. The results are also always flawless, so you can even try out a dish for the first time to rave reviews. My 19 mo old son has many food allergies, and I've found several great soups that even my friends kids love, and it gets them to eat their veggies...

An example is the herbed carrot soup which is wonderful with fresh herbs from the garden, and picky kids just drink it up asking for seconds! Some recipes require many ingredients that add flavor, but, I found that a nice kitchen herb garden makes your shopping lists very small! Not too many exotic ingredients at all! I personally love her notes on substitutions, and optional dairy items since my husband has to watch his cholesterol.

Summary: Fantastic
Review: I've had this cook book for about 9 years now and have cooked nearly every recipe in it. It's easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. Each recipe has an estimated preparation and cooking time which is a great way to gauge the intensity of what you're in for before you start. I'd highly reccomend this book for beginers as well as more advanced cooks. Katzan explains each step in clear and easy langauge and also adds hints for where to obtain some of the more exotic ingredients. I've gotten so used to cooking some of the dishes that I've begun experimenting by substituting ingredients and seasonings. This cookbook includes dairy and eggs so it's not for vegans, but if you are ok with dairy and eggs then it's a good source.

Summary: Cheesy
Review: I've never been a fan of Katzen's cookbooks. The original recipes were drenched in cheese, cream and butter. "Ethnic" recipes (except, perhaps, for those drawing on her own heritage) tended to be bland and inauthentic. Although the newer edition promises to correct these faults, I don't find that the food is substantially different. Bleah.

Summary: Yummmm, but Hmmmm
Review: I've tried several of the recipes in the book, and they've all been great, but I haven't yet found the recipe for cooking moose...

Summary: Exceptionally savory: good if you're into delicate tastes
Review: If you're looking for attractive layout and exceptionally helpful illustrations, you can't go wrong with this cookbook.

If you're looking for delicately balanced and modestly complex recipes with a cosmopolitan undertone, this cookbook will work for you.

If you're still a little bit young, however, and your tastes aren't quite as refined as those of your elders, it might take you a few years before your palette can settle into the more complex aromas of Moosewood foods.

My tastes tend towards cheese and bread, and, although I generally appreciate exotic meals when served to me, I rarely find it interesting to make them. For me, these recipes are simply not tasty enough to go through the arduous process of making them; thus I would caution others with similarly unrefined taste buds to stay away from this cookbook. For vegans and savory vegetarians everwhere, however, this book is no doubt a dreamy rolodex of excellent meals.

Summary: How I Learned to Cook
Review: In college, I was a summer intern at an international school and one of my jobs was to prepare lunch for 30+ people who came from all over the world. I wasn't going to just put out cold cuts, so I found this cookbook on a shelf in the kitchen. I recognized it because my mother often used it and so I knew the recipes were vegetarian-friendly and healthy. But I had no clue how to cook (the only thing I knew how to do was to boil water for pasta)! That summer, I made the ratatouille, spanikopita, carrot-mushroom loaf, gazpacho...basically most of the dishes! This book is fabulous; a great step-by-step guide. It is very basic and the directions are clear and simple. Everything is spelled out. I had no clue how to cook and I learned by using this book. At the end of the summer, the head of the school toasted me for "the best lunches in the history of the program." Thank you Moosewood! ps: and these dishes pleased everyone from France, Japan, Russia, Bulgaria, and Italy!

Summary: Even an omnivore can love this book
Review: Look, all I wanted to do was start eating more vegetables, and this book is getting me to do just that. All the recipes are easy; very few call for ingredients I can't find in rural Nebraska; and, most importantly, everything tastes *wonderful*. Do NOT assume that only vegetarians will find this book useful.

Summary: A cookbook that I actually use!
Review: Loving to cook, and loving to read, I enjoy cookbooks immensely. This also leads to a sizeable collection, most of which are so esoteric or old-fashioned (WWII rationing, etc.) or unhealthy that they are fun to peruse, but that's it.
The New Moosewood Cookbook is awesome!! Not only are the recipes healthy and fun to read, they are incredibly flavourful and satisfying. Ms Katzen's book is in her own script, and her comments and tips about the recipes endearing. She also has a comprehensive index that is better than any I have ever seen. Having made at least half of the recipes in this book, I have only disliked one.
If you love good, not-dull, but not overly complicated recipes, The New Moosewood Cookbook is for you.
