Rating: Summary: great start to baking for egg allergic person Review: We got this book when my allergist recommended it for my severely egg and dairy allergic child. My daughter was only just about to turn one at the time and I was desperate to find a cake recipe for her first birthday party. Not only does this book have egg-free recipes, but also many that do not have dairy either. It was a wonderful place to start and we found some really good recipes. WHen you are first introduced to living with food allergy, you feel very overwhelmed, what on earth are you ever going to feed your child? but this book really helped us make her feel less different. We always had something stored in the freezer for special occasions and we got all of our first recipes from this book. As your experience with food allergies grows, you may find other useful books and even come up with some recipes of your own, but I highly recommend this book as a starting point!

Rating: Summary: Good Idea, Bad Cake Review: Whoops! Based on one recipe, I wish I hadn't brought this book. The recipe, "Silver White Cake" sure was easy to make. It sure was ugly to look at. The center fell; the top was sticky and gooey; the texture was coarse and rubbery. But that's okay, it tasted pretty bad too. I swear I followed the recipe to the letter. You ask, "Is it fair to judge a book on the basis of one recipe?" My reply, "Life is too short to make bad cakes." Maybe other recipes in this book are okay, but I'll never find out. My copy is on its way back to Amazon. Other things bothered me too. Like me, the author has a daughter who has an allergy to eggs and milk. But the book is, "Bakin' without eggs," not "Bakin' without eggs and milk." The author seems to go out of her way to add milk to everything. Even the few cakes that don't use eggs or dairy have dairy in the frosting. Okay, okay, so I can use a different frosting. But the point is there are precious few cakes here that address both allergies. And the book doesn't have a single picture. I could be really nasty and say, "I bet I know why," but I won't. All I can say for sure is that ONE of her cakes is not photogenic. Nor are there any helpful indices, like a list of all desserts that exclude BOTH eggs and milk or a chapter on substitutions, i.e., on what to substitute for dairy in the recipes that contain dairy products. My guess is that this book is premature. The author should have spent a lot more time developing her recipes before subjecting the public to them.
Rating: Summary: Excellent recipes, lots of choices Review: With about 150 recipes in the book, and many variations possible for some recipes, you get a lot of dessert choices I didn't think would be possible for an egg-allergic family. Most recipes are easy, if time consuming, but all the recipes I've tried were excellent. My child's grandmothers have even borrowed some of the recipes so they can have sweets for my child when he comes over. I'm very glad I bought this book.
Rating: Summary: Imagine this scenario!.... Review: You are a young child at a birthday party at school or a friend's house. You can't eat the srcumptious-looking birthday cake in front of you because you have certain allergies and are afraid of Anaphylatic shock. Other kids are teasing you and calling you 'different.' My name is Stacey and I am 31 years old. I found out I had peanut/egg allergies last year and it is difficult to eat at restaraunts/parties because I have to ask what is in each product. I get strange looks as if I'm being 'picky' for no good reason. But I am an adult and know how to 'politely' protect myself. But...can you imagine what a child would feel like? It is very important to get the word out about allergies-especially for childrens' sake. This book is wonderful for allergy prone children/adults. I have tried the 'apple sauce' variation of Rosemarie's "Loaded Choc.Chip" recipe to cut cholesterol, and it was STUPENDOUS. "Karen's Fav. Apple Cake" is mouth-watering! Keep up the good work, Rosemarie!
