Rating: Summary: Takes (some of) the terror out of food allergies Review: After learning that my youngest has several food allergies, I didn't know what to do. This book has given us several great recipes. Unfortunately, nuts are included in many of them.
Rating: Summary: Great book, but maybe not for the dairy allergic Review: All of the recipes are eggless, just as it promises. BUT, I am also allergic to milk. The author states in her introdution that her daughter was also allergic to milk, so I assumed most of the recipes would easily go milk-free as well. This is not the case in the cake section. Unlike most cake recipes, the author chose to use sour cream or yogurt in place of milk in most of the recipes. I will probably eventually figure out how much milk substitute I can use in place of these things, but it's not as easy as replacing plain old milk. But this cookbook is well worth buying for the cookie recipes alone. It's always easy to find vegan cake recipes, but cookies are another story! (I often use vegan dessert recipes even though I am not vegan. Helpful hint to new moms of allergic kids.) This cookbook is egg-free ONLY. If you or the person you're cooking for has other allergies, please know that this cookbook will probably have several recipes for you (unless you are allergic to gluten), but the majority contain dairy and several call for nuts (I believe the recipes are peanut-free though, and nuts are uaullt optional in most recipes). It is mainly the dairy that is hard to get around because of calling for sour cream or yogurt instead of plain milk. I also wish it had an egg-free pudding or custard recipe. That would be really great! I miss my gram's peanut butter custard pie.
Rating: Summary: A must read for the egg allergic or their parents Review: For 4 long years, we've struggled with a daughter with egg allergies. Dessert was always hard without eggs, and Christmas cookies, snacks at school and pancakes with egg substitutes were never really close to the real thing. Then I read about this book at the allergist's office. It changed everything. Now we can all have GREAT CHOCOLATE CHIP cookies, great cakes that taste like a regular cake(not something that sort of looks like a cake) or tremendous muffins that will actually separate into two rather than crumble apart like the egg substitutes. Buy this book for a better life with an egg allergic child.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Rosemarie! Review: For the first time in his 6-yr-old life, my egg-(and soy- and peanut-) allergic son is able to eat cornbread and brownies! REAL cornbread & brownies!! When I showed him this book and described its contents, he whooped with joy and carried it around for a half-hour trying to read it. He, too, was disappointed there were no pictures to drool over, but the results more than made up for that. His non-allergic brother gobbled up the treats just as fast -- he and I both thought they were the best cornbread and brownies we'd had.One mistake I made on my first brownie attempt was to use bread flour (only kind I had). The brownies came out gooey (though still tasty :). Next try I used all-purpose unbleached as the author recommended, plus added 10 min to baking time, and they were perfect. The author does state in the intro that depending on where you live, some recipes may need more/less liquid or other tweaking. She also states that the book mainly addresses egg and peanut allergies. We've flagged 15+ pages for more kitchen trials, my 6-yr-old as lead supervisor and head bowl-licker (another plus to eggless cooking - no salmonella worries)...the future looks sweet! And gingery, and biscuity, and...zucchini-y? Can I say that here?
Rating: Summary: Frustrated, gave up! Review: I am amazed at all the rave reviews for this book. I have tried quite a few cake and cookie recipes trying to give this a fair shake. The first cake fell like a stone, the next one stuck in the pan, the next one was heavy but ok. The jelly cookies were ok but after several more cookies that spread out to thin or were not cooked I give up! I have been baking for years and follow recipes exactly but I am challenged to bake without eggs or peanuts for my son. I don't think I will use this book again because it irritates me so.
Rating: Summary: I HAVE THIS BOOK IT IS GREAT! Review: I AM NEW AT BAKING AND TRIED SEVERAL OF THE RECIPES IN BAKIN WITHOUT EGGS. NOT ONLY IS IT A GREAT TITLE BUT I HAVE MADE APPROXIMATELY 20 RECIPES IN THIS BOOK CAKES AND COOKIES MY FAVORITES WERE THE CHOCOLATE COOKIES, AND BANANA BREADS, SOUR CREAM CHOCOLATE CAKE, APPLE CAKES AND SEVERAL OTHERS BUT, TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, I READ THE OTHER REVIEW OF SOME PERSON WHO WROTE SOMETHING NOT SO NICE ABOUT ONE RECIPE SHE MADE AND I MADE THE SAME RECIPE AND IT WORKED FINE FOR ME AND NOT ONLY THAT I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED BAKING OUT OF THIS BOOK; I NORMALLY DO NOT WRITE BOOK REVIEWS BUT THIS ONE IS WELL WORTH THE REVIEW. IT IS ALSO A GREAT FORWARD, THE MOTHER CAME UP WITH THESE RECIPES BECAUSE HER DAUGHTER COULD NOT HAVE ANY EGGS. I AM NOT ALLERGIC TO EGGS I JUST THOUGHT THAT SOUNDED VERY INTERESTING AND TO MY SURPRISE THE RECIPES ARE ALL GREAT THAT I TRIED SO FAR. I ALSO BOUGHT THE BOOK FOR SOMEONE ELSE THAT KEPT ASKING FOR THE RECIPES;. P.S. LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO BAKE MORE THAN ONE RECIPE IN A BOOK BEFORE YOU CAN SAY ANYTHING AND I FELT THIS BOOK DESERVES A FAIR AND GREAT REVIEW AND WOULD LIKE TO COMMEND THE AUTHOR FOR WRITING IT, MY FAMILY AND I THINK IT IS CHOCOLATYLUSCIOUS.
Rating: Summary: Cheesecake to die for! Review: I don't know so much about the rest of the cookbook yet, but if the "Can't believe it doesn't have any eggs" cheesecake is any indication, this should be a happy addition to my cookbook collection, as my son is allergic to eggs. I love to bake and have been on the lookout for eggless recipes. I am excited to try more of the recipes!
Rating: Summary: Bakin' without Eggs Review: I just love this cookbook! It takes all the frustrations out on how to substitute eggs in recipes. The recipes also use things you already have in your home, they have just done all the work for me! Anyone who has a child allergic to eggs needs this cookbook!
Rating: Summary: Easy and delicious recipes Review: I love this cook book! My son is milk, egg and peanut allergic and I needed a good cook book that has cookies, cakes, etc that a 15 month old can eat. The majority of the recipes that I have tried are truly great - and very easy to make as well. Even my husband and 3 year old (who does not have food allergies) loves the food that I make, and they are very picky eaters. Some of the recipes I can't make because of the ingredients, but most I can use as is or just substitute soymilk, safe butter, etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with food allergies, especially if you have a child that has them. The chocolate chip cookies taste just like tollhouse, and the granola bars are awesome!
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I've tried several of the recipes in this book and they were all great. Yes, the texture is slightly different than recipes with egg, but not bad, just different. The flavor of everything I've made has been wonderful!
