Rating: Summary: Delightful! Not just a cookbook Review: This book is delightful! It is not just a cookbook. Through the eye of Ms. Sgubin, we get a glimpse of the life at Mrs. Onassis's household, from birthday parties, summer time in Martha's Vineyard or in Skorpios Island, winter in New York, and lunches with her friends. This book is an eye opener that sometimes the life or rich and famous is very much like ordinary people. Who knows that Mr. Onassis's favorite chocolate cake came from a mix!
Rating: Summary: Priceless insight into the private world of a legend Review: This book is one of the best books you could ever hope to own if you are an admirer of the late Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. A whole new perception of Mrs Onassis emerges after reading the truly uniqe perspective that Marta had while living with and working for Mrs. Onassis. The fact that it was a book endorsed and even encouraged by John Kennedy Jr and his sister Caroline makes it a trasure in any Jackie Onassis collection. The never before seen private photos of Mrs. Onassis and views of the inside of her homes on Martha's Vineyard and 1040 5th Avenue is alone worth the price of the book. First hand accounts of Mrs. Onassis' daily life and special occasions told with such personal memory makes it a must have for all that admired Mrs. Onassis from afar. We will never get to meet her, but reading this book and looking upon the exclusive photos will help the reader feel a bit closer to the beauty and complex personality that was Jackie. Please feel free to email me if you are a Jackie Onassis fan. Id love to hear from you.
Rating: Summary: Do you want the recipe for the best brownies in the world? Review: This book, I feel, is like getting a peek into the Kennedy family photo album/scrapbook. It's filled with so many wonderful anecdotes of Jackie's family life you won't find in any of the latest "Jackie" books on the market. PLUS you'll get a fabulous brownie recipe. I brought these treats into work and people were fighting over them! And they're easy to make, too (did Jackie really eat these fattening brownies? Maybe a nibble or two, I suppose). You won't be sorry you bought this book.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful cookbook with beautiful pictures of family&food. Review: This cookbook not only provides a glimpse into the lives of Jacqueline Kennedy and her children, but offers simple, yet classy recipes. The private pictures Marta Sgubin collected throughout her years as an employee make it much more personal. I recommend it highly!
Rating: Summary: World's best scrambled eggs Review: This is a delightful book, full of warm reminiscences and wonderful recipes. I recently made Marta's delicious scrambled eggs, and now my husband doesn't want them prepared any other way. I am anxious for summertime, when I will try some of Marta's fresh vegetable salads and her summer pudding. The photos in this book show the private side of the Kennedys, which evoked bittersweet feelings in me. I remember Camelot and the tragedies that followed; paging through the photos in Marta's book brought back some of the warm, familial feelings the Kennedys engendered. Since the recent death of JFK Jr., the memories chronicled in this book are especially touching. Marta, you have written a charming tribute to the Kennedy family, whose members you obviously love and respect. Brava!
Rating: Summary: Heart-warming stories and fabulous recipes Review: This is a wonderful book!! Marta tells us life in Jackie's home and it makes us see her life in a real sense. Away from the media spin, we see a good life much more normal, with great food. Marta's recipes are wonderful! The flavors combine to make such wonderful food! AND they are not too complicated that they are not do-able. They are easy and well written to make in our kitchens! Marta is wonderful!! Thank You!! I hope we can have a vol. 2 someday!!
Rating: Summary: A lovely book Review: This is truly a wonderful book. The recipes are very good and, while elegant, simple to execute. But the best part of the book is the glimpse you get into the life of Jacqueline Onassis and her children. The reminiscences are intimate without being invasive. It is a pleasure to look at the photos and read the remembrances. I cannot imagine anyone who remembers "Camelot" not enjoying this book.
Rating: Summary: Cooking for Madam Review: Very enjoyable reading and lots of personal pictures. Presented a side of Mrs. Onassis and her family that is seldom seen and you couldn't help but like them a lot when you finished reading the book. Nice recipes but the inside story is why you should purchase the book.
Rating: Summary: Cookbook and memoir Review: While this is an interesting cookbook, the real value is a look into the private life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by a valued member of her household. Marta, an Italian who spent more time in France, first came as a French-speaking au pair to tempt the Kennedy kids into learning the language. While that dodge usually failed (she learned English), Marta had other talents. Watching the cooks wherever she went, Marta developed a skill in the kitchen and ended up as Mrs. Onassis' private chef. Marta treats us to reminiscences about life with Jackie, home photos, and a side of Jackie we never saw in the tabloids. The little hand-written notes of thanks for a mango ice cream show a gracious person with a sense of humor. The recipes are interesting--Eggs Toupinel is a hollowed-out baked potato refilled with an egg and re-baked. This favorite was served as a lunch for Mrs. Clinton. The information about how food was served and when is also interesting. This is a fascinating peek into the world of a beloved celebrity, and a very fun book to read.
