Rating: Summary: Best in Class Review: I own several hundred cookbooks, and this is the best, hands-down. Everything I make from this book is best in class. I have served the best apple pie, the best fried chicken, the best blueberry streusel cake, the best pumpkin pie of my life-- right from this book. This is the book I give at Christmas, and it's very, very often the book I am making photocopies of for friends who "want my recipe." Nothing fancy here-- this is cooking from the heartland... few spices outside of salt and pepper and very normal ingredients onhand. Only one rule... find the best and freshest produce you can-- that's what makes these recipes sing.
Rating: Summary: Get Ready for Thanksgiving! Review: I've used this book for years and love the recipes. It has a strong solid homecooking feel with all-new flavors and approaches, traditional in every sense but still as surprising as if these tastes were remembered from a past life or some passed down yet evasive memory. Yet, only last year did I trust this treasured cookbook and exchange the old family standby's and favorites for an Amish menu. Let's just say that my family might never eat the old favorites again. People who never enjoyed pumpking pie in their lives feasted for days on the few pies I made following the pumpking pie with praline crust recipe. Stuffed squash, fantastic stuffing (Thanksgiving section), and even a cranberry cake with a butter cinnamon sauce (probably the biggest surprise of all) were the most beloved and most mourned for when the very last crumb evaporated. This book not only covers holidays, but canning and summer fare, and it's elegant recipe for whole wheat bread is a weekly favorite in our home.
Really, if your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner needs a shot in the arm or the drumleg, give this book a go asap.
PS: the cinnamon butter sauce is great on the cake, but is oh so good on just about anything. Don't pour it on the cake when you serve it, but let people apply the amount they desire; save the rest of it for dipping your crescent rolls in, etc. The author says it can't be reheated. Not true: saran wrap, pyrex measuring cup, microwave, stir. It might seem like the recipe has you make too much. Oh no......

Rating: Summary: Best basic amish book Review: Marsha Adams has written the best book on the subject ever. I am a professional chef but enjoy looking to our heritage. The pat in the pan pie crust is the best. It is one of my most used books; one can tell by how dirty the pages and hand written notes. It is a must for any one. All of Marsha's books are a must. I tell every one about them.
Rating: Summary: The best gift I ever got! Review: My friend gave me this book for a birthday a few years back and she immediately had to buy one for herself. We had fun comparing which recipes we just had to try next! I have tried many on family and friends and not one has let me down. The cinnamon rolls became a family tradition and I am not allowed at family functions without them : ) !! Zucchini and tomato casserole was wonderful! Pies are excellent. You truly can't go wrong with any of the recipes in the book. By the way, for all you Mounds Bar lovers---try the chocolate coconut candy----It's even better!!!
Rating: Summary: Best Books on Amish Cooking Yet! Review: Several years ago, while writing for "The Brandon News" in Brandon, Florida, it was a great privilege to interview Marcia Adams. Ms. Adams was here in Florida for a book signing of her newest Christmas Book. She and her cook books are equally charming and have been a great source of inspiration in my cooking through the years. I have been watching Ms. Adams for as long as I can remember and I own all of her books. I look forward to many more years of her work and would love to see more cooking shows from her on television. Thank you for being a true inspiration! Sandy Gayle Walker
Rating: Summary: Use it and love it Review: Terrific recipes, and enjoyable to read too. My very-picky-eater husband likes virtually everything I've made from this book. Truly, I haven't been disappointed in a single recipe.
Rating: Summary: It's not diet food...but who cares? :) Review: This book and "New Recipes from Amish Country" are, without a doubt, my most used, most read and most worn cookbooks in my library. These cookbooks are not only wonderful for their recipes, but also for just curling up on the couch with a cup of coffee to browse through. The pictures and stories are wonderful. Marcia Adams is one of my favorite cookbook authors on the market today. She knows what she's writing about and her books are incredibly enjoyable to go through, not to mention educational. My favorite recipes out of Cooking from Quilt Country - Whole Wheat Bread (wonderfully easy and very delicious), Cinnamon Rolls (great icing!) and Potato Pancakes (I still haven't found a recipe that can match the flavor of this one)

Rating: Summary: Easiest, best pie crust Review: This is a delightful book that offers interesting glimpses of the Amish lifestyle and preserves some wonderful recipes. I greatly enjoy the photos and anecdotes in this book, as well as the terrific recipes. I make the Hot Water Pie Crust in nine-crust batches and freeze it (it freezes perfectly). It is the easiest pie crust recipe I've ever used and tastes just like Grandma's. We don't have pie often, due to its fat content, but when we do, this crust never fails. The oven-fried chicken recipe is also a winner. Again, it has a lot of fat, but it's great for special occasions and company dinners. Kudos to Marcia for ensuring that these treasured recipes aren't lost, and for providing a peek at a unique way of life.
