Summary: A New Favorite
Review: After finding this book in the library and looking through it... I knew I HAD to buy it. There were just too many recipes I wanted to try. I usally only buy canned soups, and while I have used them in creative ways I never dreamed that they, along with dry mixes could add so much to so many foods! I plan on making one of the shrimp dip recipes for our department pitch in, and a co-worker is going to make the Tomato Soup Spice Cake. This book is for the novice as well as the experienced cook. Keep it handy.. you will use it often!

Summary: Everything you ever wanted to cook with soup
Review: I am not a snob. I often use canned soup as well as dried soup mixes in my cooking. I am a busy mom and don't have time to concoct elaborate sauces and I have children who are extremely suspicious of "flecks" and "chunks". On the other hand, I like to eat food that TASTES good. I welcomed the advent of this cookbook and have already stuffed it with post-it notes on the recipes I am going to try. There is an enormous variety here and if you like to cook with soup you are certain to find something that you will like!The biggest drawback I found was the emphasis on shallots over onions (this can be pricey for some), but this is easily rectified..just use onions. Some recipes calling for just the seasoning package and not the noodles from ramen noodle soup had me looking askance as well, but you could easily subsitute a bouillon cube. I don't have room to store opened packages of ramen noodles, although I occasionally use the noodles without the seasoning and store those to throw in soup!

Summary: The Soup Mix Gourmet
Review: I checked this book out of the library and loved it! In fact, I loved it so much that I had to order it. It has so many great ideas for busy cooks. With a well stocked soup pantry, you can put together a gourmet meal in a flash. It's well thought out, well organized, and has lots of great trivia. It's a practical cookbook for anyone.

Summary: It would be great without the MSG...
Review: I checked this out from the library after reading the great reviews. It gives some very helpful advice with a list of must have spices, herbs, and a list of the different soup mixes with an explanation of what each can be used for. There's also a section on recipes for dry rubs and seasoning mixes which was great.
I made the meatloaf last night with the beef onion soup mix and used cornbread stuffing in place of plain breadcrumbs and spread the ketchup on top. It tasted so good! Then I realized that I wasn't feeling like myself which usually happens after I have something with BHT or MSG (monosodium glutamate). All the Lipton soup mixes contain MSG. I was so disappointed. Unless I can find another brand of soup mix without MSG this book won't do me much good. :(

Over the weekend we hosted a grill out and I gave the Rub in small spice containers with the recipe attached and received raved reviews over it. Everyone must try these recipes out to fall in love as I did!!

Review: I love to cook! I love the selecting of fresh ingredients, the prep work, and the pleasure of carrying out a complex recipe successfully -- but only when I have time! During the week, everything changes and nights are unpredictable in my home. It is next to impossible to predict when everyone will be home and ready to eat or how much effort the chef (me) really wants to put forth... The Soup Mix Cookbook provides easy, reliable recipes that have a lot of flexibility to make dinner prep a breeze. I particularly likes the Baked Potato Soup. It is thick and hearty, people can dress it up as they choose; add a tossed salad to it to complete the meal. Pick the book up, put it in your car, and shop with it on your way home...dinner will taste so much betrer than regular take-out and your family will be impressed with that American rarity -- a home-cooked meal!

Summary: It would be great without the MSG...
Review: I'm a cookbook junkie, endless perusing the latest editions and the old standards (and not-so-standards) for new and exciting meals. A normal cookbook purchase will usually net 3 or 4 suitable recipes for my family's tastes. The Soup Mix Gourmet has proven a bonanza! I've marked over 40 recipes that sound terrific for our needs, and all five that I have made so far were total winners. I'll be looking for more works by this author; she really has the "magic touch" in the kitchen! I work in a brick-and-mortar bookstore, and have recommended this book to over two dozen folks in the last couple of weeks. All of them have expressed great pleasure (one even sent me a couple of boxes of dry soup mix with a thank-you note).
This book is beautifully done. Buy it today!
