Rating: Summary: Makes me wanna get ona airplane! Review:
This just came into the library and I picked it up to take a look. I have never been to Venice, but I am thinking about going this year. This book made me want to go immediately!
To tell the truth, I can't say if the places that are recommended are good or not. But the writin is very good and the background is good. I cant imagine the information isnt right. When I do go to Venezia (as they say in Italian) I will have this book under my arm!
Rating: Summary: Very Personal! Very Practical! Review: CHOW! VENICE is a compact, helpful, personal guide to good eating (and drinking) in my favorite city in the world. I love how these ladies are so specific in their directions to the restaurants and bars they review. Even better are their specific recommendations for the most delicious treats each place has to offer. There are helpful hints on the Venetian way of life as well. If you're going to Venice (lucky you!) tuck this guide into your daypack and follow it faithfully.
Rating: Summary: Who says you can't get a decent meal in Venice? Review: Have been to Venice previously, going again next month. I compared this to other dining guides, and find it much the best. The authors aren't just steering you to mainline places, but off the beaten path, where the locals eat (much more fun!) Some of the reviews are enough to make you hungry themselves. Descriptions of the restaurants are helpful, as well as the directions for finding them (although wandering about lost is more fun in Venice than just about anywhere else I've ever been!) Looking forward to exploring some of their suggestions.
Rating: Summary: A book you can trust! Review: Having actually used this book as a restaurant guide for my last trip to Venice, I can confidently say that "what you read is what you get." All four of the recommended eateries we tried proved to be exactly as they were represented in Chow!Venice. This made our visit so much more enjoyable than previous trips, where we had to try and guess if a restaurant might be worthy or not. The authors are clearly people who love Venice, but maintain a critical eye (or mouth, as the case may be), when reviewing the subjects in this book. Brava to a book well written, and thank you especially for the clear, concise directions provided for reaching the many culinary delights of Venice. Cheryl Alexander, San Diego, California

Rating: Summary: Forks up for Chow Venice! Review: Here's the antidote to the poison spewed by so many people, "That you can't get a decent meal in Venice." Shannon Essa and Ruth Edenbaum take you like insiders into dozens of Venice's known and unknown restaurants and bars highlighting the good and the great spots in everything from lunch of pizza or tramezzini to an afternoon snack of cichetti, an excellent dinner of branzino or spaghetti con vongole verace to a late night serving of French fries. Your mouth will water at the descriptions.Their easy writing style will make you feel as if you're hearing reviews from old friends, especially with their anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book (one of my favorite parts). And after getting lost in Venice several times myself looking for a restaurant, I find the provided directions extremely helpful. My only suggestion for the next edition (and I do hope there will be a second edition - as well as a Chow Rome, Chow Florence, etc.) would be to highlight some restaurants by category. Since most of us are not lucky enough to spend extended periods of time in this incredible city, a Top 3 Romantic Spots, or Top 3 Family Dining for example, might prove helpful in narrowing down choices from this incredible list. Chow Venice is an essential book to planning a wonderful dining experience in La Serenissima.
Rating: Summary: GREAT READ Review: I found this book through a forum on a website named slowtrav.com while searching for vegetarian cuisine in Italy, this book was mentioned on the site so I decided to run out and purchase it. This book was fascinating and very well written.
Rating: Summary: Chow! and a good map is all you'll need. Review: I found this book totally by accident, a business contact I deal with highly recommended it to me. My wife and I travel to Italy once a year and I usually have pounds of guide books and maps, Chow! Venice is definately one I would not leave behind on future trips. Over the four days we spent in Venice we ate at 5 of Shannon & Ruth's recommendations and we weren't disappointed. Thier reviews were accurate, insightful (mainly because they give the "back story" of most of the places they review and that helps give you a better sense of the place) and perhaps most important in Venice, clear instructions as to how to find the restaurant in the first place, which is always a challange. The food glossary in the back of the book is so good that I wish it was a "pull out" so I could use it as sort of cheat sheet while looking at a menu.
Rating: Summary: A delicious new book Review: I have been to Venice many times, but this book makes me want to go back soon and try some of the interesting, less known restaurants and trattorias written about here. The authors have really done their homework.
Rating: Summary: Don't go to Venice without this book Review: I just returned from 5 days in Venice, and used Chow! Venice more than any other guidebook to this amazing city. I cannot imagine trying to find the best restaurants, with the food that we wanted to eat, and at the best prices without having this book in hand.
It was funny seeing all the other tourists reading the menus in front of the restaurants and trying to decide whether or not to go in. By consulting this book, I was able to pick out a restaurant by, area, menu, and cost and simply make my reservations by phone.
Each and every one of the reviews was right on. We were never disappointed. We even used the author's recommendation and ate at a Mexican restaurant with an Italian flair. And this happened in a city that is suppose to be known for bad food and tourist traps! With Chow! Venice, this is simply not true.
The authors have eaten at all the restaurants they write about, and their first-hand knowledge is unlike any other guidebook I have ever read.
Since we were renting an apartment, we also used this book to find the best supermarkets and bakeries as well. I couldn't have been more pleased.
So if you're going to Venice, do yourself a favor and bring along Chow! Venice. If you don't, and you have a bad meal, you can only blame yourself.
