Summary: Good book
Review: I had read about this book on another website and was immediately intrigued by one of the recipes listed. It was an orange vanilla chip cookie that was supposed to taste like those old fashioned orange creamsicles. The day I bought the book and brought it home, I baked those cookies and took them to a bake sale at work. They were a big hit. I made about 5 dozen and they were quickly gone.

When I was mixing the dough, I thought the authors had made a mistake. The dough was very dry and difficult to mix. I had thought about adding extra eggs. I decided to go ahead and bake the first batch. They baked up thick, soft, chewy, and delicious. They didn't spread and become thin. They were surprising light-tasting and made everyone want more.

The other recipes look just as wonderful and I look forward to trying them all. They are simple, with no complex ingredients and the instructions are very clear. Even a first-time baker would have no problem with these recipes. The only complaint I had was that there were too few pictures.

Summary: Ho-Hum...........
Review: I have baked for years and admire Maida Heater among others. Was very excited to receive this book. But what a disaster the first two recipes have been. Picked at random, the Oatmeal cookie and Lemon Layer cake both turned out uneatable. I followed the directions to the letter and as other cooks' recipes (Heater, Child, Fields, Rosso & Lukins, Rosenberg, etc.) have always turned out first rate in the same kitchen, could not find any reason other than these authors' recipes for the failure of both dishes. I wish I could get my money back for this book. Glossy pictures and lots of promise but if two dismal recipes back to back are anything to judge by, this book is not what it purports to be.

Summary: None of the recipes turn out right
Review: I have been baking for about 20 years. I visited New York and fell in love with the Magnolia Bakery. Last year, I bought this book. Since then I have tried several recipes, including cheesecakes, layer cakes, brownies, squares and cookies. I'd say about 80% of the recipes don't come out right ...and I don't mean they are bland or slightly off; they consistently turn out just awful: underbaked brownies, cookies that fall apart, sickenly sweet icing, flat layer cakes, dry cheese cakes. Maybe it's the difference between the ingredients they use at the bakery vs. those you can get in the supermarket or the difference between baking in a home oven vs. a commercial oven, but the ONLY time the recipes came out right is when I made a common-sense judgement and strayed from the book's suggestions -- baking longer than suggested times or adding more or fewer ingredients, etc.

My favorite cookbook continues to be the Cook's Illustrated/ America's Test Kitchen "Best Recipes" book.

Even so, next time I'm in New York, I'm headed to the Magnolia Bakery again. It's great!

Summary: Finally, the recipes from one of my favorite bakeries
Review: I have been to the Magnolia Bakery often and I was so excited when I saw they had a cookbook I bought it immediately. So far I have only made the Almond Crescent Cookies and they turned out wonderfully. I am looking forward to making the rest of my favorites.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: I have made several of the cakes, frostings and the brownies from this cookbook. I found the recipes very easy to follow and the results were better than local bakeries. It is important to remember that baking is like chemistry. The recipes I made were huge success with my family and friends.

Summary: Best cookbook ever!
Review: I have never come across a cookbook that I've loved more. So far we've made the Strawberry Oat Squares, Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownies, and the Brownies with Cream Cheese Icing. I actually made the strawberry oat squares with a cherry pie filling, and they turned out wonderful. I think the recipie should have called for more cherry pie filling, but it was still good. The chocolate peanut butter brownies were excellent, and the cream cheese frosted brownies were amazing! (it calls for quite a lot of frosting, and it might be overwhelming to some, but I loved it.) I hope Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey do another cookbook soon!

Summary: A Mystery
Review: I have tried making the recipe for yellow cupcakes (what I assumed they made in their shop here in NYC) and everytime I make them they are tasty but come out like dense little poundcakes, not as fluffy as they could be. Anyone else have this problem?

Summary: Great Cakes
Review: I have tried several recipes from this book and can't wait to try more. My family is asking when I will bake another coconut or german chocolate cake. It is great to have old fashion recipes that taste like my grandmother cooked.

It is very important to follow the instructions exactly for the recipes to turn out right. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I am.

Summary: Finished off my 4th of July picnic
Review: I needed a dessert and I had blueberries and so I found the Blueberry Crumb Pie recipe and made it on the fly. It made the picnic! Everyone was ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over the pie. It was so delicious. If half the recipes are as good as this one, I will be happy. This recipe is worth the price of the book.
