Summary: It's a Winner!!
Review: I currently own a copy of the original 1950 Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook. I learned to cook from this book, and now my children will be able to have their own shiny, new copies to learn from too. You can't go wrong with this cookbook since the book is crammed full of delicous, easy to prepare recipes. Also, the photos and directions make cooking easy for both novice and experienced cooks alike. It's a winner!!

Summary: I'm so gratified that my classic cookbook is being reprinted
Review: Back in 1950, when I wrote this book, cooking was a highly respected portion of "women's work." Most women didn't work outside the home, and even those who did made sure to get home in time to cook a delicious, nutritious meal for their husbands and children. Things are different today, but these basic recipes will still take you through the week--and the year--with simple, tasty dishes that don't require a cooking-school education or half a day to prepare. For all those of you whose mothers or grandmothers cooked from this book, I'm glad that you now have the chance to own your own copy.

Summary: most dependable and down to earth
Review: I did in fact receive this cookbook for my wedding shower in 1954. Still have it. Still LOVE it. It is falling apart from use and age. (Not me, tho. I am 69 this year) I have hundreds of cookbooks collected over the years, but this is the REFERENCE BOOK that I always check before using any "new recipe" from another cookbook. As the years went by I have become a very experienced cook, learning how to adapt any recipe, including the old Betty Crocker book. It has hundreds of notations in it now.........improvements and mistakes alike......I wouldn't be without it and it has become an old and welcome friend in my kitchen. Mae Pelkowski-Erie, PA

Summary: the betty crocker and best cookbook on the market
Review: i have had a lot of cookbooks but my favorite was always the betty crocker cookbook. the reason it was is because no matter what i needed a recipe for it was there. the burnt sugar cake &the burnt sugar frosting recipe are the ones my mother taught me to make.I could hardly put this book down. Just like my new morning brew made from soy beans. Taste like coffee, sans the caffeine, and contains no tannic acids. I have no more heartburn and that is something to write about. Google it online under "s oyfee".

Summary: Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook Surpasses Any Other!
Review: I was first introduced to this cookbook back in the 1950's in my Mother's and Grandmother's kitchens. It is easy to follow and takes you step by step on how to prepare the recipes. I will admit that my creations seldom looked as scrumptious as those pictured in the book, but that didn't stop me from wearing out the hardbound copy my Grandmother passed on to me on my wedding day. It is a wonderful book and a must have for any kitchen! Take some time to read through the book and see if you don't agree. Enjoy!

Summary: Amazon.com offers the best deal on this great classic!
Review: My late aunt owned this book and I borrowed it from my 80 year old mother who inherited it. The bread and refrigerator roll recipes were excellent as well as all the cake and cookie recipes I tried. Mother was unwilling to part with her copy so I ordered my own online...used for about $80. Now this old, formerly out-of-print book has been reprinted and is even better than the original! It's basically the same as the old book except it comes with a ring binder (like the newer Betty Crocker cookbooks have) making it much easier to use. (lays flat on the counter)It also has dividers for each section (like Soups, Meat/Fish, Pies,Frostings, etc.) which is a big improvement. The nostalgic effect is not lost in the new copy, however, because the pictures/photos, page-layouts, and page numbers are exactly the same as the original 50's book. I own close to 100 cookbooks and this is one of my favorites. It's teaches how to make the basic comfort foods of the 1950's when women were expected to know how to bake "from scratch." (The Amazon.com price is cheaper than I've seen it anywhere else (like Cracker Barrel)and their service is excellent and FAST. I ordered my new copy and received it the next day)

Summary: the difinitive american cookbook
Review: I love this cookbook. I first discovered my grandmothers original addition which was yellowed and almost falling apart. When they came out with a revival I bought it immediately. This cookbook is especially ideal for cooking things like cakes pies and cookies. Their pie crust recipe has gotten rave reviews every time I make it. It also has wonderful nostalgic information about preparing the table and how to feed teenagers. However, it has really useful information such as definitions of cooking terms and what various types of service entail. This is a wonderful basic cookbook that gives you the technique to make anything.

Summary: Nostalgically precious
Review: Another of my favorite browsing books.

FOR BROWSING: A must-have. The 1950s text and pictures will make you laugh out loud. My favorite part is the Tips section at the back: "Try to notice things all day so you'll have something to talk about at dinner." Also interesting from a gastronomically historic viewpoint - raw eggs and sticks of butter galore.

FOR COOKING: Sometimes, I prefer this to the more health conscious Everything You Need to Know to Cook Today book simply because of the sheer volume of recipes. I agree that sometimes Betty only offers basic meals that lack in imagination, and this book is no exception. However, it manages to fit a dozen or so cake recipes and variations on one page. I like the "Key Recipe" structure and I always like Betty's step-by-step process.

I am a very restless chef who often doesn't like to make a dish twice, but this is one of my favorite books to own. Any experienced chef who likes to have a book around to keep him or her grounded and to pique his or her curiosity of the history of American cuisine, consider this book.

Beginners, get it, but get the modern version too. You don't want to rely solely on the extremely dated health and menu-planning ideas in this book.
